  • Normative Interfaces and Discourses in Super Mario Maker
Loading… The Journal of the Canadian Game Studies Association Vol 10(16): 196-213 http://loading.gamestudies.ca Creating with (Un)Limited Possibilities: Normative Interfaces and Discourses in Super Mario Maker Isabelle Lefebvre Université de Montréal [email protected] Abstract This paper explores how the creative expression of players is framed within Super Mario Maker (Nintendo, 2015). Dispelling the promises of “endless possibilities” (Nintendo, 2015) with which the game is marketed, this article argues instead that a player’s creativity is oriented, limited, and influenced by the interface of the game (its possibilities, and impossibilities), the paratext supplied by Nintendo (advertising, user guide, and tutorials), the reception, as well as the appraisal of levels by the community of players within the closed social platform of the game. In order to analyze this process of “normativization,” the following article begins by proposing an actualization of theories of participatory culture as defined by Matt Hills (2002), Henry Jenkins (2006), Sam Ford, and Joshua Green (2013). From these remarks, this paper also proposes to locate some of Super Mario Maker’s normative elements that have an influence on players’ creations, using as a starting point McIntyre’s work on creativity (2012), Albera’s concept of “amateur-dispositive” (2011), Kline et al.’s “Three Circuits of Interactivity” (2003), and Consalvo’s gaming capital (2007). Finally, this paper analyzes certain recurring motifs found in Super Mario Maker’s user-generated levels that serve to benefit what I call the “paradigm of difficulty,” a pattern well-known within the video game medium since its infancy.

  • Super Mario 64 Was Proclaimed by Many As "The Greatest Video Game
The People Behind Mario: When Hiroshi Yamauchi, president of Nintendo Co., Ltd. (NCL), hired a young art student as an apprentice in 1980, he had no idea that he was changing video games forever. That young apprentice was none other than the highly revered Shigeru Miyamoto, the man behind Mario. Miyamoto provided the inspiration for each Mario game Nintendo produces, as he still does today, with the trite exception of the unrelated “Mario-based” games produced by other companies. Just between the years 1985 and 1991, Miyamoto produced eight Mario games that went on to collectively sell 70 million copies. By record industry standards, Miyamoto had gone 70 times platinum in a brief six years. When the Nintendo chairman Gunpei Yokoi was assigned to oversee Miyamoto when he was first hired, Yokoi complained that “he knows nothing about video games” (Game Over 106). It turned out that the young apprentice knew more about video games than Yokoi, or anyone else in the world, ever could. Miyamoto’s Nintendo group, “R&D4,” had the assignment to come up with “the most imaginative video games ever” (Game Over 49), and they did just that. No one disagrees when they hear that "Shigeru is to video gaming what John Lennon is to Music!" (www.nintendoland.com) As soon as Miyamoto and Mario entered the scene, America, Japan, and the rest of the world had become totally engrossed in “Mario Mania.” Before delving deeply into the character that made Nintendo a success, we must first take a look at Nintendo, and its leader, Hiroshi Yamauchi.

  • An Argument for Non-Formalist Level Generation in Super Mario Bros
``What is a Super Mario level anyway?'' An Argument For Non-Formalist Level Generation in Super Mario Bros. Tommy Thompson Anglia Ruskin University Cambridge, UK [email protected] ABSTRACT The video game series Super Mario Bros. has proven immensely popular in the field of artificial intelligence research within the last 10 years. Procedural content generation re- search in Super Mario continues to prove popular to this day. However much of this work is based largely on the notions of creating ‘Mario-like’ level designs, patterns or structures. In this paper, we argue for the need to diversify the generative systems used for level cre- ation within the Super Mario domain through the introduction of more aesthetic-driven and ‘non-formalist’ approaches towards game design. We assess the need for a broader approach to automated design of Mario artefacts and gameplay structures within the context of Super Mario Maker: a Super Mario Bros. level creation tool. By assessing a number of top-ranked levels established within the player community, we recognise a populist movement for more radical level design that the AI community should seek to embrace. Keywords Procedural content generation, level design, Super Mario Bros. INTRODUCTION Automated game design (AGD) is a field of research and development that focusses on the creation of entire games: ranging from traditional card and board games to that of video games. This is a immensely tasking yet creative field, with a large body of research typ- ically found within the procedural content generation (PCG) community: where emphasis is placed on creating specific assets such as the interactive space (levels/maps), weaponry, quests and story-lines.

In this sequel, we prove that solving a generalized level of Super Mario Bros. is PSPACE-complete, strengthening the previous NP-hardness result (FUN 2014). Both our PSPACE-hardness and the previous NP-hardness use levels of arbitrary dimensions and require either arbitrarily large screens or a game engine that remembers the state of off-screen sprites. We also analyze the complexity of the less general case where the screen size is constant, the number of on-screen sprites is constant, and the game engine forgets the state of everything substantially off-screen, as in most, if not all, Super Mario Bros.

The video game industry is no different in this respect from any other. Nintendo found a big name brand in a little Italian hero Mario, and his brother Luigi. These two characters starred in the little known Mario Brothers before Super Mario Brothers took the world by storm. Since then there have been countless sequels to the original hit on the Nintendo Entertainment System (8-bit), Super Nintendo (16-bit), and Nintendo 64 (64-bit). While the sequels have introduced new characters and new worlds, the original Super Mario Brothers still remains a classic. Super Mario Brothers is by far the best-known console video game of all time. It has captured the attention of millions worldwide and single handedly turned Nintendo into a household name. For these reasons and more, this game will be reviewed in this website. | Next Page | Mario Bros Review | STS145 Home | Christopher B Montgomery [email protected] Last Updated 2/16/01 http://www.stanford.edu/~cmonty/sts145/MarioHome.html [2/23/2001 3:32:12 PM] STS145--The History of Video Game Design Game Information Super Mario Brothers is an original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) game released in 1985.

Rabindra (Robby) Ratan March 2002 STS 145: History of Computer Game Design Case History Simply Smashing Nearly twenty years ago Nintendo Co., Ltd. (NCL) pioneered the personal game-console industry with the introduction of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The home-gaming concept was not completely new, but as we learned in class, Nintendo flourished because of the ingenuity and amusement presented in its initial games. Now, with advancements in technology rendering the possibilities in video games seemingly endless, Nintendo has lost neither its genius nor humor in the creation of its interactive stories. One exemplary aspect of Nintendo’s game production is the tendency to recycle objects and images. Instead of plain sequels, Nintendo reuses characters, themes, and ideas in a wide variety of games, transcending the boundaries of genre wherever possible. Far from an indication of lacking imagination, such recycling provides friendly, familiar concepts for a player to encounter in numerous settings. The unmistakable characters are far more than cartoon actors in some interactive children’s plays. They are life-long friends who will accompany you on multiple adventures and journeys, learning lessons with you along the way. Many adventures and journeys have passed since Nintendo entered the industry, some of which were especially pivotal in setting the stage for Nintendo’s success. A recent publication for Nintendo’s latest game console, Super Smash Bros. Melee1 (SSBM)(HAL Laboratories) on the GameCube, continues Nintendo’s custom of reusing game concepts. Going far beyond regular concept recycling though, Super Smash Bros. Melee incorporates and improves upon many aspects of historically significant games, making SSBM a culmination and celebration of Nintendo’s accomplishments and culture.

‘It’s a-me, Mario!’ Exploring dynamic changes and similarities in the composition of early Nintendo video game music James Anthony Fox Email: [email protected] or [email protected] Abstract As with films, a thoughtfully composed video game soundtrack has the ability to dramatically enhance and elevate the experience for the audience or player. This article explores the potential issues and difficulties of composing for video game systems by studying the sound-producing hardware and music for two popular systems from one manufacturer. By comparing two of Nintendo’s Super Mario titles, which appeared on both 8-bit and 16-bit systems, through an analysis of the technology, audio, visual (audiovisual), music, and gameplay elements, it is shown that the musical composition was affected by the limitations of processing power. The discussion shows how the composer, Koji Kondo, overcame the issues of limited computing power by using layers of repetition while applying various functions of music for film to enhance player immersion. Kondo composed theme music that has become engrained in popular culture and is synonymous with one of Nintendo’s flagship franchises (Greening, 2014). By attempting to understand the method or approach behind the composition for earlier systems, it is possible to investigate and discuss the evolution of video game music while acknowledging and contributing to the study of music for games. A musical analysis of the Castle and Underwater themes on each system allows for a direct comparison of the compositional approach, while an audiovisual analysis reveals the presence of existing cinematic tropes and identifies potential influences on the creation of effective musical soundtracks for video games.

Emmi Rukkila REDESIGNING SUPER MARIO Creating realistic versions of some characters and animations featured in Super Mario franchise Bachelor’s thesis Degree programme in Game Design 2018 Author (authors) Degree Time Emmi Rukkila Bachelor of Culture April 2018 and Arts Title 56 pages Redesigning Super Mario 6 pages of appendices Creating realistic versions of some characters and animations featured in Super Mario franchise Commissioned by - Supervisor Brenda Jiménez Rodriguez, Lecturer Abstract Super Mario is one of the most well-known and iconic characters in the video game world. This study examined how the nature of the Super Mario game franchise would change, if the character design and visual style of the colorful and family friendly game would be realistic instead and set in the 80s New York. The thesis researched the history of Super Mario franchise and its successful start and how the character design affected the popularity of the game. Historical research was carried out of Italian Americans as well as the appearance of citizens of New York in the 80s to produce historically accurate redesigned characters. An animating technique, rotoscoping, was to be used in the animation process of the redesigned Mario. The said technique and its history were examined, likewise the games in which the technique had been used before. Based on the research, realistic redesigns were created for the three main characters of the Super Mario franchise: Mario, Princess Peach and Bowser. In addition, three prototype animations were created for Mario with the rotoscoping technique. The planning and design processes were covered clearly and in detail.
