TO SEE HOW YOUR FAVORITE PLAYERS STACK UP, CHECK OUT THE BBTN 100 ON ESPN.COM PROJECTIONS Both the Nationals and Braves have young, talented rosters with few Isolation players. The key difference, though, which will be reflected in the final standings, is that the Braves’ locker room lacks veteran leadership and diversity with respect to age and nationality—traits that promote good chemistry. • Sports and the Rhetorical Construction of the Citizen-Consumer
THE SPORTS MALL OF AMERICA: SPORTS AND THE RHETORICAL CONSTRUCTION OF THE CITIZEN-CONSUMER Cory Hillman A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2012 Committee: Dr. Michael Butterworth, Advisor Dr. David Tobar Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Clayton Rosati Dr. Joshua Atkinson © 2010 Cory Hillman All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Michael Butterworth, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate from a rhetorical perspective how contemporary sports both reflect and influence a preferred definition of democracy that has been narrowly conflated with consumption in the cultural imaginary. I argue that the relationship between fans and sports has become mediated by rituals of consumption in order to affirm a particular identity, similar to the ways that citizenship in America has become defined by one’s ability to consume under conditions of neoliberal capitalism. In this study, I examine how new sports stadiums are architecturally designed to attract upper income fans through the mobilization of spectacle and surveillance-based strategies such as Fan Code of Conducts. I also investigate the “sports gaming culture” that addresses advertising in sports video games and fantasy sports participation that both reinforce the burgeoning commercialism of sports while normalizing capitalism’s worldview. I also explore the area of licensed merchandise which is often used to seduce fans into consuming the sports brand by speaking the terms of consumer capitalism often naturalized in fan’s expectations in their engagement with sports. Finally, I address potential strategies of resistance that rely on a reassessment of the value of sports in American culture, predicated upon restoring citizens’ faith in public institutions that would simultaneously reclaim control of the sporting landscape from commercial entities exploiting them for profit.

  • The Architect (PDF)
UPCOMING PROMOTIONS THE ARCHITECT OF THE DETROIT TIGERS The blueprint that built Dave Dombrowski into one of baseball’s most respected executives. By Ben Chiswick On a sunny Wednesday afternoon in West Michigan, Dave Dombrowski sat behind home plate at Fifth Third Ballpark. The President, CEO and General Manager of the Detroit Tigers blended in among the scouts and radar guns on a day in which the rest of the ballpark was overtaken by 6,000 screaming kids enjoying a field trip. But Dombrowski was not there to complement a bag of salty peanuts with a cold beer, or egg on a buddy to take part in the dizzy bat race. The baseball veteran was there to work, evaluating the talent on the Tigers’ Class-A affiliate, the West Michigan Whitecaps. In his 33rd year in the industry of professional baseball, Dombrowski has learned a thing or two about player development. Though his current role requires his primary focus to be on the big league club in Detroit, he sets aside time every year to visit each of the Tigers’ full-season affili- ates. “Coming in here and watching is for my own firsthand experience and to get a feel for it,” explained Dombrowski. “I’ve heard reports on all of these guys but I like to get a feel myself. It’s amazing when you’ve seen a lot of guys play over the years, people stand out very quickly.” Dombrowski is kept well informed on all the happenings in the minor league system throughout the year. This primarily comes in the form of conversations with Director of Player Development Glenn Ezell and the many reports left by coaches, scouts and roving instructors that spend the season visiting the various minor league affiliates in the Detroit Tigers farm system.
