Official Publication of Retrosheet, Inc. Volume 5, Number 4 December 1, 1998 Greenberg and Interleague Play As we come to the close of another year, it is conventional to summarize the big events of the last 12 months. We have done a lot this The last issue of TRS carried an article concerning interleague play year, for example, as discussed in the late 1950s. Hank Greenberg was the originator passing the 50,000 of the idea and our crack staff has tracked down the information. In View from mark in total May 1954, Greenberg, then GM of the Indians, offered a plan for games entered, games that count in the standings to be played between all NL and the Vault AL clubs. gathering David Smith, thousands more President Greenberg’s plan included four games between each AL and NL game accounts club, with two at home and two away. The intraleague contests from many sources would be cut from eleven to nine (home and away) to and increasing our visibility with the general accommodate these new games. However, that arrangement public as well as many Major League teams. would have to be modified each year since the eight game inter- league sets would add 32 games while the intraleague reductions However, this is also a good opportunity to would only account for 28 games. Greenberg said that the details think of ways to improve the organization in could be worked out later but the idea was to have a home and the coming year. To me there is one area away engagement with each club.

  • Sports and the Rhetorical Construction of the Citizen-Consumer
THE SPORTS MALL OF AMERICA: SPORTS AND THE RHETORICAL CONSTRUCTION OF THE CITIZEN-CONSUMER Cory Hillman A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2012 Committee: Dr. Michael Butterworth, Advisor Dr. David Tobar Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Clayton Rosati Dr. Joshua Atkinson © 2010 Cory Hillman All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Michael Butterworth, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate from a rhetorical perspective how contemporary sports both reflect and influence a preferred definition of democracy that has been narrowly conflated with consumption in the cultural imaginary. I argue that the relationship between fans and sports has become mediated by rituals of consumption in order to affirm a particular identity, similar to the ways that citizenship in America has become defined by one’s ability to consume under conditions of neoliberal capitalism. In this study, I examine how new sports stadiums are architecturally designed to attract upper income fans through the mobilization of spectacle and surveillance-based strategies such as Fan Code of Conducts. I also investigate the “sports gaming culture” that addresses advertising in sports video games and fantasy sports participation that both reinforce the burgeoning commercialism of sports while normalizing capitalism’s worldview. I also explore the area of licensed merchandise which is often used to seduce fans into consuming the sports brand by speaking the terms of consumer capitalism often naturalized in fan’s expectations in their engagement with sports. Finally, I address potential strategies of resistance that rely on a reassessment of the value of sports in American culture, predicated upon restoring citizens’ faith in public institutions that would simultaneously reclaim control of the sporting landscape from commercial entities exploiting them for profit.

Forgotten Washington Senators of the 1950s ©DiamondsintheDusk.com “Washington: First in war, first in peace, and still last in the American League.” Baseball Hall of Fame sports writer Charley Dryden (right) coins the above utterance during the 1904 season, when the Washington Senators finished 38-113 and a distant 55 1/2 games behind the American League pennant-winning Boston Americans. For its first 11 years of existence, the luckless franchise in the nation’s capital does its best to live up (or down) to Dryden’s cynicism by finishing last, or second to last, in all but two of those 11 years. Even Washington’s entry into the ill-fated United States Baseball League in 1912, finishes in fifth place with a 6-7 record before the league ceases opera- tion in June. Forty years later, Washington’s “Boys of Summer” once again do themselves proud. From 1950 to 1959, the Senators finish as high as fifth only three times and seventh or eighth (in an eight-team league) six times, while going through three managers. Where in my previous “Forgotten” article, Pittsburgh’s 1960 World Championship team clearly had its genesis from some of the bad Corsair teams of the 1950s, Minnesota’s American League championship team in 1965, does not derive itself from the previous Forgotten Senators of the 1950s decade. Only five players (albeit five good players) - Bob Allison, Jim Kaat, Harmon Killebrew, Camilo Pas- Bob Usher, 1957 cual and Zoilo Versalles - played for the original Senators’ franchise. In regards to the Forgotten Sena- Jesse Levan, 1954-55 Carlos Paula, 1954-56 tors’ first team, I selected one player for each of the eight field positions José Valdivielso, Roy Dietzel, 1954 and a eight-man pitching staff.
