BEDROCK CO.

It’s tough making a name for yourself in the shadow of a famous father. It’s tougher if you choose the same profession and in the same county. But that’s what Morgan Twain-Peterson—the son of Sonoma Ravenswood Winery founder and winemaker Joel Peterson—is doing with his Bedrock Wine Co. Morgan’s passion for wine started at an early age (as one might expect). Morgan began making small lots of at age 5 from fruit given to him by the Sangiacomo family. Motivated by the best of Domaine Dujac, he began experimenting with whole cluster fermentation, different types of French , and various ripeness points. Vino Bambino Pinot Noir, as the wine came to be known, was made from 1986 to 2001 and featured on the wine lists of Craft, Gramercy Tavern, Blue Hill (which featured the original 1986), Delmonico’s, Aureole, and Mesa Grill. Many years later, after undergraduate at Vassar and graduate at Columbia University, Morgan returned to Sonoma. He founded Bedrock Wine Co in 2007. His passion with Bedrock Wine Co. is to seek out California’s heirloom vineyards: sites planted in the late 1800s or early 1900s and usually with a crazy grab bag of Mediterranean grape varieties. These ultra-low-yielding vineyards produce spicy, exotic reds, but in tough economic times, they’re often the first to be ripped out in favor of higher-producing vines. The wines overall are a soulful expression of the vineyard and the year. As Morgan states, “I generally eschew sorting except in “worst-case scenario” situations. I feel that bringing in the entire range of fruit from a given site results in the truest expression New Releases Bedrock 2013 Zinfandel, Monte Rosso Vineyard, Sonoma Valley - 12/750ml Net $420 Extremely Limited, Order___Case(s) The 2013 is very typical of the —perhaps not as flamboyant as the 2012 but dense, perfumed, focused and age worthy. Perched nearly 2000 feet above Bedrock Vineyard on the bright red, volcanic, soils of Mt. Veeder lies Monte Rosso Vineyard. Described as one of the most beautiful vineyards in the world, on a clear day one faces west and looks all the way to the blue of San Pablo Bay and the pointed edifices of San Francisco in the distance. It is named Monte Rosso for its bright-red, iron-rich, soils, which impart a remarkable perfume to all grapes from the vineyard. This wine comes from the original vines planted in 1886. 300 cases produced. Bedrock 2013 Syrah, North Coast - 12/750ml Net $264 Order___Case(s) As in 2012, the 2013 North Coast Syrah benefited from the benevolent 2013 harvest and it easily rivals last year’s iteration in terms of complexity. A blend of Hudson, Weill, and Kick Rach, the wine saw roughly 60% whole-cluster along with a nice 4% dollop of co-fermented Viogner. Rasied in a combination of larger format and traditional barrel sizes the wine ultimately saw 17% new French oak along with a 14 month elevage with no until bottling. A Syrah’s Syrah, filled with pepper, smoke and violets this should make for delicious drinking over the next 5-10 years. 700 cases produced. Bedrock 2013 ‘The Bedrock Heritage’ Bedrock Vineyard, Sonoma Valley - 12/750ml Net $420 Order___Case(s) Founded in 1854 by General William “Tecumseh” Sherman and General “Fightin’ Joe” Hooker, Bedrock Vineyard has grown grapes for over 150 years. Following the first epidemic of phylloxera in the mid-1880’s, the vineyard was replanted in 1888 by Senator George Hearst—a mining magnet, an early father of California, and the father of publisher William Randolph Hearst. It is from those 125 year old vines that ‘The Bedrock Heritage’ wine is crafted. Always the wine closest to their heart, ‘The Bedrock Heritage’ comes from Morgan Twain-Peterson’s family’s vineyard in the heart of Sonoma Valley. Composed of over 22 interplanted varieties, this is the wine that Morgan started the winery to make. The piece of rock strewn red clay soils produced a wine of citrus-tinged red fruits and spice. Composed of roughly 55% Zinfandel, 30% Carignane, with the balance being the many other varieties scattered throughout the vineyard. Bedrock 2013 Heritage Red, Evangelho Vineyard, Contra Costa County - 12/750ml Net $360 Order___Case(s) Own rooted vines planted in the 1890s. If the success of the 2011 was blind luck (show up with a truck in the wee hours of morning in a place Morgan had never been based on the tip of a friend), and 2012 was the first effort of following an entire year’s worth of farming and coming to understand the unique conditions of Antioch and Oakley, then 2013 is a wine that reflects a better understanding of the site. Evangelho Vineyard lies just inland from the Sacramento River Delta on banks of sand that can reach 40 feet in depth. Though a warm area there is rarely a day that passes without a serious wind—very much like a Californian Mistral and the antecedent to the fog coming through the Golden Gate—racing through the vineyard. This causes the vines to shut down for much of the hot afternoons, and the result is a wine that seemingly defies conventional wisdom when it comes warm weather sites. Evangelho is the earliest-picked vineyard by weeks in the winery, but it is tends to be the lowest in pH and alcohol of the Heritage Wines. This means that the crackling red fruit of Carignane, unctuousness of Zinfandel, and terrestrial perfume of Mourvedre is held aloft by an underlying brightness. Bedrock 2013 Old Vine Zinfandel, California - 12/750ml Net $264 Order___Case(s) Though it is legally a Zinfandel, and labeled as such, it is also a Bedrock wine so you can be sure it has its full quotient of the wacky, weird and wonderful in it as well—nearly 23% Carignane, Mourvedre, Grenache, Petite Sirah, Abouriou, Aubun, and assorted mixed white varieties. The 2013 Bedrock Old Vine Zinfandel comes from vines aver- aging over 80 years of age. Like its predecessor, the lovely 2012, it benefited enormously from the second year in a row of exceptional quality with higher than average yields. Though its core still revolves around the Sonoma Valley appellation (Bedrock Vineyard, Monte Rosso, and Casa Santinamaria Vineyard), Bedrock has become geographically more adventurous due to the addition of a few pretty amazing vineyards. The first of these is Nervo Ranch in Alexander Valley with its steep, decomposed shale soils. The second is Sodini Ranch on Limerick Lane in the Russian River Valley that Bedrock Wine Co. happily farms. The last is the amazing Stampede Vineyard in the Clements Hills AVA of Lodi: own-rooted on granitic sands and planted in 1919, it is a star in the making under the new ownership of the Perlegos family. There are also bits of Papera Ranch, Pagani Ranch, and Lorenzo’s in the blend. Customer______Signature______Date______2015 Cream Wine Company 1035 W.
