Welcome to the autumn edition of Tales From The Woods magazine, a busy time for us all at this moment in time. At the end of this very month of October we shall be at London’s legendary 100 Club, and we all here at TFTW are in a state of excited anticipation in readiness for our return to this, the oldest music venue in London and possibly the UK, that has seen countless venues come and go, some lost to the passage of time since it first opened its doors in the heart of London’s west end amidst the carnage and destruction of World War II an incredible 75 years ago. The legend that is our wonderful headliner, Tommy Hunt, former member of doo- wop royalty in his native USA with The Flamingos, later to have huge hits and following as a bona fide soul man, a particular hero on the British northern soul circuit, is so looking forward to performing for us, on a show dedicated to that golden age of doo-wop back in the late fifties and early sixties.

  • Beatles History – Part One: 1956–1964
BEATLES HISTORY – PART ONE: 1956–1964 January 1956–June 1957: The ‘Skiffle Craze’ In January 1956, Lonnie Donegan’s recording of “Rock Island Line” stormed into the British hit parade and started what would become known as the ‘skiffle craze’ in Great Britain (vgl. McDevitt 1997: 3). Skiffle was originally an amateur jazz style comprising elements of blues, gospel, and work songs. The instrumentation resembled New Or- leans street bands called ‘spasms,’ which relied on home-made instru- ments. Before skiffle was first professionally recorded by American jazz musicians in the 1920s and 1930s, it had been performed at ‘rent parties’ in North American cities like Chicago and Kansas City. Many African- American migrant workers organized rent parties in order to raise money for their monthly payments (vgl. Garry 1997: 87). Skiffle provided the musical entertainment at these parties, as everybody was able to partici- pate in the band, which usually consisted of home-made acoustic guitars or a piano backed by a rhythm section of household instruments, such as a washboard, a washtub bass, and a jug (vgl. McDevitt 1997:16). Jazz trumpeter and guitarist Ken Colyer pioneered the skiffle scene in Great Britain. In 1949, he formed the Crane River Jazz Band in Cran- ford, Middlesex, together with Ben Marshall (guitar), Pat Hawes (wash- board), and Julian Davies (bass). Their repertoire included skiffle songs “to illustrate aspects of the roots of jazz and to add variety to a pro- gramme” (Dewe 1998: 4). After leaving the group in 1951, Colyer mi- grated to the United States to work with jazz musicians in New Orleans.

Opening CD1, Slippin’ away is a fairly straightforward, bluesy, riff-based song whose theme is, of course, decision-making. Information derived from the published and unpublished work of others has been acknowledged in the text and references are given in the list of sources. Signed: Tom Hennessy Date: 2 Abstract The emergence of folk, jazz, blues, skiffle, rock n roll and R&B scenes in the post-war period of 1945 – 1964 was a major development in Anglophonic music culture. Key individuals operating within these scenes frequently pursued authenticity, or framed their musical activities as “authentic” – that is as cultural produce that was supposedly “true” to a certain way of life, or that offered something “real” in the face of the commercial culture of the mainstream. While this “authenticism” was productive in many respects it also represents a problem for the cultural historian. This thesis tackles this problem by first diagnosing the origins, nature and effects of authenticism, and then by undertaking three new historical studies through which a differently inflected history of this remarkable phase of popular music can be drawn.
