SCOTTON FAMILY TREE circa 1658 to 2010 with particular reference to the South African branch of the family 1 SCOTTON FAMILY TREE In Loving Memory of our mother Emily Mary ("Molly") Pelteret née Scotton (1911-1994) This should not be viewed as definitive. Any contribution to expanding on, or correcting, the information here listed will be welcomed. Given the time and logistical constraints, the author suspects that he has explored relatively few sources, and thus cannot certify to the accuracy of certain segments of this document. Those documents known to exist in South Africa have been examined fully. There are numerous photographs in the possession of the author, many of which are framed and therefore could not be included in the site. The contributions of numerous family members including David Pelteret, Ethel Toone, Billie Hines, Joyce Sendall, Joan Haworth, Rosemary Jones, Clive Scotton, Judy Taylor and Tim Shaw are acknowledged with gratitude. 2 SCOTTON FAMILY TREE: circa 1658 to 2010 -3 NATHNIEL/NATANELL SCOTTON/SCOTTEN bc. 1658 d. unknown m. 3 July 1682 Mary GUMBY [sic]/GUMLY (~ 6 January 1656 Countesthorpe, Leicestershire do. Family lore has it that offspring of Matilda became the Dame of Sark. Extensive research on my part has failed to support this claim; and the Collings family, I think correctly, repudiates any link. The House of Collings has ruled Sark since 1852: 1852 Dame Marie Collings 1853 - 1882 Rev William Thomas, son 1882 - 1927 William Frederick, son 1927 - 1974 Sybil Mary, daughter, better known as Sybil Hathaway, after her second husband's name, and the Dame of Sark. 1.4 THOMAS SCOTTON bc. 1844 Household Record 1881 British Census Census Place: Bitteswell, Leicester, England Thomas SCOTTON, head of the household was 57 years [sic: should be 37 years b. 1844] born in Claybrooke Magna, Leicester, and owner of 14 Acres of land Harriett Thurston SCOTTON (née SEE), his wife aged 34 years born in New Walsoken, an housewife Thomas Bertram SCOTTON, their son aged 12 years [b. 1869] born in Wigston Magna, Leicester, a scholar Ernest Edward SCOTTON, their son aged 10 years born in Bitteswell, Leicester, a scholar Joseph SEE, iii Father of Wife, aged 57 years born in Ely, Cambridge, England; an Ale & Porter Merchant Eliza SEE, Mother of Wife, aged 57 years born in Downham, Norfolk Sarah BIRKS, a servant unmarried aged 20 years born in Chatham Bitterswell Church ca. 1900 1.4.1 Thomas Bertram b 1869 d 3 October 1934 m 1900 Annie Louisa COCKERILL 1.4.1.1 Thomas d 1976 m 1930 Agnes Kathleen HERRICK Thomas m Agnes Kathleen Herrick Offspring : Jill née Scotton (Ullesthorpe Rd, Bitterswell) m Roy Smith Offspring : Peter Roy & Richard Thomas 1.4.1.2 Eric b.1900 1.4.1.3 Ethel b. 1901 alive in 2004 m Parker TOONE Ethel my great-grandfather's brother's granddaughter and still alive [2004] living in Ashby Parva m Parker Toone, a successful property auctioneer until handicapped by epilepsy Offspring : Geoffrey m Rosemary Elizabeth REST Offspring : Sarah & Emma 1.4.1.4 John Bertram b 1903 d 14 February 1925 6 1.4.2 Ernest Edward b. 1871 d.
