The crucial tests facing Europe’s commitment to open society will be how it treats minorities such as Muslims and ensures equal rights for all in a climate of rapidly expanding diversity. The Open Society Institute’s At Home in Europe project is working to address these issues through monitoring and advocacy activities that examine the position of Muslims and other minorities in Europe. One of the project’s key efforts is this series of reports on Muslim communities in the 11 EU cities of Amsterdam, Antwerp, Berlin, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Leicester, London, Marseille, Paris, Rotterdam, and Stockholm. The reports aim to increase understanding of the needs and aspirations of diverse Muslim communities by examining how public policies in selected cities have helped or hindered the political, social, and economic participation of Muslims. By fostering new dialogue and policy initiatives between Muslim communities, local officials, and international policymakers, the At Home in Europe project seeks to improve the participation and inclusion of Muslims in the wider society while enabling them to preserve the cultural, linguistic, and religious practices that are important to their identities. One Germany in Europe, 1989 – 2009 The Fall of the Berlin Wall (November 9, 1989) Two journalists from Die Tageszeitung (taz), a left-of-center West Berlin newspaper, describe the excitement generated by the sudden opening of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989. The event was the result of internal pressure applied by East German citizens, and it evoked spontaneous celebration from a people who could once again freely cross the border and rekindle relationships with friends and relatives on the other side. (Please note: the dancing bear mentioned below is a figurative reference to West Berlin's official mascot. Beginning in 1954, the flag of West Berlin featured a red bear set against a white background. In 1990, the bear became the mascot of a unified Berlin. The former West Berlin flag now represents the city as a whole.) "We Want In!" The Bear Is Dancing on the Border Around midnight, RIAS – the American radio station broadcasting to the East – still has no traffic interruptions to report. Yet total chaos already reigns at the border checkpoint on Invalidenstrasse. People parked their cars at all conceivable angles, jumped out, and ran to the border. The transmission tower of the radio station "Free Berlin" is already engulfed by a throng of people (from the West) – waiting for the masses (from the East) to break through. After three seconds, even the most hardened taz editor finds himself applauding the first Trabi he sees. Everyone gets caught up in the frenzy, whether she wants to or not. Even the soberest members of the crowd are applauding, shrieking, gasping, giggling.

    50 Jahre DGVT – Chronologie der Ereignisse zusammengestellt von Bernhard Scholten nach Berichten in den GVT/DGVT- Mitteilungen und der Verhaltenstherapie und psychosozialen Praxis (VPP) Teil 1: Die ersten 25 Jahre von der Vorgeschichte über 1968 bis 1992 Vorgeschichte: In den 50er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts entwickelten Burrhus F. Skinner in den USA, Hans-Jürgen Eysenck in England sowie Joseph Wolpe und Arnold Lazarus zu- erst in Südafrika, später in den USA erste auf lernpsychologischen Grundlagen beru- hende psychotherapeutische Methoden, die sie „Behaviour Therapy“ oder „Behavior Therapy“ gelegentlich auch „Behavior modification“ nannten. Erna Duhm und Albert Görres brachten diese im anglo-amerikanischen Raum entwi- ckelten Methoden nach Deutschland; Duhm nach Göttingen, Görres erst nach Mainz, dann nach München. Sie boten erste „verhaltenstherapeutische Seminare“ an. 1963 gründete sich die Sektion Klinische Psychologie im Berufsverband Deutscher Psychologen (BDP). 1965 wird Johannes C. Brengelmann Leiter der psychologi- schen Abteilung des Max-Planck-Instituts für Psychiatrie (MPI) in München. Brengel- mann vertritt einen streng behavorialen Kurs. 1966 wird Albert Görres erster Inhaber eines Lehrstuhls für klinische Psychologie an der LMU München. Jarg Bergold und Klaus M. Mandler übernehmen die Leitung der verhaltenstherapeutischen Ambulanz an der LMU. An der 1964 neugegründeten Ruhr-Universität Bochum wird 1966 eine Beratungsstelle für Studierende unter Lei- tung von Eva Jaeggi und Ingeborg Jöhrens eingerichtet, die verhaltenstherapeutisch arbeitet. 1968 Die Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Verhaltenstherapie wird in München (GVT) ge- gründet. Johannes Brengelmann, Peter Gottwald, Jarg Bergold, Eibe-Rudolf Rey, Wolfgang Tunner bilden den 1. Vorstand. Lilly Kemmler erhält den Lehrstuhl für klini- sche Psychologie in Münster. Frederick C. Kanfer ist mit einem Fulbright-Stipendium an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum.

The cornered leadership of the collapsing “First State of Workers and Farmers on German Soil”7 had risked the desperate flight forward to stem the bloodlet- ting of “Republikflucht”8 and regain the trust of the population. In Berlin (West) this “Day of Re-Encounter”9 (Momper) led to an emotionally charged cheerfully chaotic exuberant weekend in which nearly two million peo- ple from the Eastern Sector and all parts of the GDR flowed into the city.
