View Photo Exhibition the Baltic Way 1989 Prime Ministers of the Baltic States to mark the 30th anniversary of the Baltic Way in Riga Published: 13.08.2019. State Chancellery On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Baltic Way, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš has invited Jüri Ratas, Prime Minister of Estonia, and Saulius Skvernelis, Prime Minister of Lithuania, to visit Latvia on 23 August. The officials will hold a meeting, as well as attend celebration events. The informal meeting in Riga of the three Baltic prime ministers is also taking place in the framework of the Baltic Council of Ministers, as Latvia holds the presidency in the forum this year. The events of 23 August 1989 known as the Baltic Way were the decisive contribution of Baltic civic society in its non-violent, unwavering effort to restore independence and return to Europe. To a certain extent, it was the first step triggering the domino effect that resulted in the collapse of the totalitarian regime in Eastern Europe, the first step towards the restoration of Latvia’s independence. To honour this event, Prime Minister Kariņš has invited his counterparts from the two neighbouring countries to join him in the celebrations in Riga. Prime Minister Kariņš will host the two officials at the Cabinet of Ministers on 23 August. Afterwards, the three prime ministers will visit the Saeima and meet with Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, as well as the Presidium of the Baltic Assembly, lay flowers at the Freedom Monument, view photo exhibition The Baltic Way 1989. A Tribute to the 30th Anniversary of the Manifestation, as well as hold a working lunch and press conference. The meeting of the prime ministers of the Baltic Council of Ministers will continue with an informal session with the officials attending a celebratory soiree in honour of the 30th anniversary of the Baltic Way featuring a musical performance by chamber orchestra Kremerata Baltica and essay readings by Latvian writer Māris Bērziņš, Estonian poet Hasso Krull and Lithuanian poet Vladas Braziūnas. It follows the release of ‘Midnight Mood’, based on Grieg’s ‘Morning Mood’ from Peer Gynt, ‘Beethoven’s Twilight’, inspired by Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, and ‘Ascending Swans’, based on the ‘Song of Praise’ from Sibelius’s Swanwhite Suite. With ‘Nutty Christmas’ the Baltic Sea Philharmonic and Kristjan Järvi transform the ‘Dance of the Reed Pipes’ and the ‘Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy’ from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker into a unique musical Christmas cracker. The SPCO will be joined on tour by Artistic Partner and “most exciting violinist in the world” (Strings Magazine) Patricia Kopatchinskaja for an unconducted program featuring Schubert’s Death and the Maiden Quartet, arranged for string orchestra by the SPCO and Kopatchinskaja. A meditation on the medieval fascination with death as seducer, friend and redeemer, the SPCO and Kopatchinskaja’s unique exploration of Schubert’s Death and the Maiden intersperses music on the same theme from many centuries, including an ancient Byzantine chant on Psalm 140, a Renaissance pavan by John Dowland, and late 20th century works by György Kurtág. Kopatchinskaja will alternate between two concertos on tour – Mendelssohn’s youthful D Minor Violin Concerto, written when the composer was just thirteen, and Armenian composer Tigran Mansurian’s Second Violin Concerto, Four Serious Songs. The tour program opens with Gideon Klein’s Partita for String Orchestra, led by SPCO Concertmaster Steven Copes.
