Scholarship appearing in the last decade has revealed the aWesome scope of this participation—involving hundreds of thousands of Indian allies—and cast critical light on their motiVations and experiences. NeVertheless this Work has remained restricted to central Mexico and areas south, while the region known as the Greater SouthWest, encompassing northern Mexico and the U.S. Southwest, has been largely ignored. This dissertation traces the moVements of Indians from central Mexico, especially Nahuas, into this region during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and charts their experiences as diasporic peoples under colonialism using sources they Wrote in their oWn language (Nahuatl). Their activities as laborers, soldiers, settlers, and agents of acculturation largely enabled colonial expansion in the region. However their exploits are too frequently cast as contributions to an overarching Spanish colonial project. -

Calderón, Chair This dissertation studies the socio-cultural connections of the United States and Mexico’s Pan-African selected twentieth- and twenty-first century sites of struggle through literature, film, and music. Novels and movies such as La negra Angustias (1948/1950), Imitation of Life (1933/1959), Angelitos negros (1948/1970), Como agua para chocolate saga (1989, 2016, 2017), and film (1992), as well as music of racial activism by Mexican and Afro-Latino artists such as Negro José and Afro-Chicano band Third Root, are all key elements of my project to study the formation and understanding what of Mexico’s Tercera Raíz entails historically, politically, and culturally. I focus my study on the development of black racial consciousness in twentieth-century Mexican cultural life, and I consequently explore the manner in which Mexican writers, filmmakers and artists have managed the relationship between Afro-Mexicans and majority ii populations of white and mestizo Mexicans, as well as the racial bridge existent between the United States’ black history, and Mexico’s Third Root. -

THE PHILIPPINES: PROSPECTS IN BUSINESS AND ARTS Sponsored by the Philippine Cultural Society (Singapore) In cooperation with Philippine Airlines. 26 TH October 2002, Hilton Hotel I am really happy to be here this afternoon with all my kababayans. I know you will be given a lot of talk about investment opportunities but I like to talk about some smaller investments that you might be interested namely Filipino artists. I can guarantee you that these investments will give you less risk, more enjoyment and the investment amount is very small. I am talking about investing in paintings specifically paintings by Filipino artists. I would like to show you some of the slides of our artists and as much as I would like to show many artists, I am afraid with the short notice and the time constraints, I am limited to what I have that is available. INTRODUCTION For me art is very personal and being brought up in the Philippines, living in the United States and Southeast Asian countries I have witnessed and interacted with many of our artists who are either visiting or working abroad. My views on the subject are probably very different from the rest of the panelists as I categorized the artists in a way that maybe different from academics and art critics. As you may have noticed, we have a great diversity when it comes to art as we have many different groups with many different influences. I am proud to say that we are rich when it comes to art and 1 that we, probably, have as many artists as we have islands in the Philippines. -

For more information, please contact [email protected]. 6 Maya and Nahuatl in the Teaching of Spanish: Expanding the Professional Perspective Anne Fountain San Jose State University Catherine Fountain Appalachian State University Abstract Indigenous languages of the Americas are spoken by millions of people 500 years after the initial period of European conquest. The people who speak these languages and the customs they continue to practice form a rich cultural texture in many parts of Spanish America and can be important components of an instructor’s Standards-based teaching. This article discusses the influence of Maya and Nahuatl languages and cultures on the language, literature, and history of Mexico and Central America. Examples of this influence range from lexical and phonological traits of Mexican Spanish to the indigenous cultures and worldviews conveyed in texts as varied as the Mexican soap opera “Barrera de Amor” and the stories by Rosario Castellanos of Mexico and Miguel Angel Asturias of Gua temala. -

PHILIPPINE D'OCUMENTS IN MEXICO CARLOS QUIRINO As AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE CELEBRATION IN 1964 OF THE Philippine..Mexican Friendship' Year, we were able to secure a complete list of documents on the Philippines from the Archivo General de la Naci6n and the Biblioteca Nacional in Mexico City, totaling in all 4,129 documents and manuscripts. These were made after examining index cards of some 229,260 documents, and ex.. elude those in the Ramo de Filipinas which we had acquired several years earlier. Out of the 4,129, documents listed, we secured the microfilm copies of 798 which we considered of importance or interest to local historiographers. For some generations, 0111'" scholars have' suspected that in Mexico there existed countless documents on the Philippines that would greatly broaden our knowledge of the Spanish colonial re gime. Dr. James A. Robertson, co-editor of the monumental. 55 volume set "The Philippine Islands, 1493-1898" and incidentally the first Director of the National Library, failed to visit Mexico in his extensive trips of research, and-merely repeated what he had heard existed there from Dr. H. E. Bolton of Texas State' University. (See Bibliography, Vol. LIII,pp. '38-40.) In 1957 two Filipino scholars visited that country for the purpose of finding what documents of interest to Filipinos were to be found there. Dr. Gregorio F. Zaide, author of numerous textbooks on history, reported enthusiastically to the Philippine Historical Association on the existence of "valuable" documents there. As he was working alone for' a short time, he was able to make only a sketchy listing, and' unfortunately permitted enthu siasm to override accuracy. -

OREGON DEPTARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION DISADVANTAGED BUSINESS ENTERPRISE (DBE) PROGRAM PLAN September 2012 1. DBE PROGRAM GENERAL REQUIREMENTS 1.1 Objectives (§§ 26.1, 26.23) The Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Program objectives are found in the DBE Policy statement on the first page of this program. To achieve the objectives of the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) DBE policy, ODOT will circulate the DBE policy as follows: To The Oregon Transportation Commission (OTC) – The Office of Civil Rights (OCR) provides annual updates to the OTC and as required. OCR will include the DBE policy with each annual update. To the Business Community – OCR will circulate the DBE Policy statement at key stakeholder events. Examples of key events include, the annual ODOT-AGC (Association of General Contractors) meeting, and “Doing Business with ODOT” small business workshops. Additionally, when the DBE Program plan update is posted to the OCR webpage, OCR will announce the plan update to the OCR list-serve and include the DBE Policy statement in the announcement. The policy will also be sent electronically to all sub-recipients of Federal Transit Authority (FTA) funded grants and included in the FTA required State Management Plan (SMP). Also, OCR will work with the Office of Procurement (OPO) and Office of Project Letting (OPL) to include the policy statement with project and proposal DBE provisions. To ODOT Personnel – OCR will coordinate an annual update on Inside ODOT (the agency’s internal newsletter) and periodic updates in the agency’s internal Diversity Newsletter. OCR will also circulate the DBE Policy statement at internal OCR and DBE-related training sessions. -
