-Q. Description: This one and a half story l~; structure was moved to this location in 1938-39 and incorporated into a house which has served variously as a post office, tea room, and antique shop. The two bay log structure is at the north end of the building and faces east. The frame and log house faces east. The frame section has a lower gable roof than the log structure. There are six over six double hung windows flanked by louvered wooden shutters. The frame &ection has asbestos shingles.

10. Significance: This house is interesting for its log and frame construction, and for its variety of uses within the community. It is believed that the two story log cabin section of this house was moved to its present site about 1938, from "Roslyn", the home of Dr. Augustus Stabler, in Brighton. It was then used as an antique shop by owners of Gittings HaHa, Marian and Henry Brueninger, and as a lunchroom, and country store. Popular with Washingtonians until 1950 when the shop/store closed, it was sold in 1955 to Richard E. and Carolyn P. Altemus, who converted the cabin into a dwelling. The current owners bought it in 1974.

DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (IF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE This one and a half story log structure was moved to its present location in 1938 and incorporated into a house which has served variously as a post office, tea room, and antique shop. The two bay log structure is at the north end of the building and faces east. A frame section with a gable roof lower than the gable roof _ of the log structure, and on the same north-south axis, is perpendicular to an east-west garage and kitchen wing. The log structure has V-notches and concrete chinking. The gable roof is covered by asbestos tiles. A massive exterior end chimney with stone foundations and a brick stack is set against the north wall. The east elevation has been covered by a modern brick and glass one story porch with a shed roof. A paneled door leads into the log structure. A six over six light window flanked by louvered wooden shutters completes the east facade. There are no windows on the north elevation. The log structure presently serves as a living room. The remainder of the house is frame, with asbestos siding and arranged in a T-plan. The frame section connecting the log structure to the rest of the house has a three-sided bay window with plate glass windows. A pair of twelve-light doors, facing north, on the south wing open into a two-car garage. The south elevation is five bays across: these are _ irregularly spaced modern windows flanked by louvered shutters. A bric1 chimney is built into the south section on the north side of the gable roof where it is intersected by the north-south frame and log wing. At the east end of the south wing there is a simple bell cut. The house is set into a hollow. New Hampshire Avenue is several hundred yards to the east. A large gravel parking is east of the house. To the south is a large gravel driveway. A stone retaining wall stretches along the east elevation.

M STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE Although it cannot be documented, it is commonly believed that the 2-story log cabin section of this structure was moved to its present site from Brighton, Maryland, in 1938-39, from "Roslyn", the estate of Dr. Augustus Stabler.l The house was purchased from a man named Marshall and moved in 1938-39, with the assistance of neighbors.2 The log cabin was moved to the Gittings HaHa property for use as an antique shop by Marian and Henry Breuninger; the Breuningers purchased Gittings HaHa and 136 acres from Ober and Mary Dailey in 1938.3 Mr. & Mrs. Stanley Smallwood worked for the Breuningers, Mr. Smallwood farming the land and Mrs. Smallwood (who is Ober Dailey's daughter) running the antique shop. /'-- The business was operated as an antique shop, country store, and lunch room, and was a favorite stopping place for Washingtonians out for a drive in the country. Many of the antiques purchased by Mrs. Brueninger in . The country store featured such items as fresh cider, gingersnaps, pork sausage, butter, pickles, and other farm products. The lUJ:rch room served homemade soups, sandwiches, salads, and similar fresh items. It closed in 1950, and remained vacant until 1955, when the building ~nd 3.135 acres were purchased by Richard E. and Caroline P. Altemus, who converted the cabin into a dwelling, The property has changed hands several times since, and was purchased by the current owners .. in 197l+. FOOTNOTES: 1.
