Significance: This house is interesting for its log and frame construction, and for its variety of uses within the community. It is believed that the two story log cabin section of this house was moved to its present site about 1938, from "Roslyn", the home of Dr. Augustus Stabler, in Brighton. It was then used as an antique shop by owners of Gittings HaHa, Marian and Henry Brueninger, and as a lunchroom, and country store. Popular with Washingtonians until 1950 when the shop/store closed, it was sold in 1955 to Richard E. and Carolyn P. Altemus, who converted the cabin into a dwelling. The current owners bought it in 1974. Candy Reed . Date researched and researcher 11/78-Roberta W. Hahn Arch. Description 12. Compiler Gail Rothrock 13. Date Compiled 2/79 14. Many of the antiques were purchased by Mrs. Brueninger in Pennsylvania. The country store featured such items as fresh cider, gingersnaps, pork sausage, butter, pickles, and other farm products. The lUJ:rch room served homemade soups, sandwiches, salads, and similar fresh items. It closed in 1950, and remained vacant until 1955, when the building ~nd 3.135 acres were purchased by Richard E. and Caroline P. Altemus, who converted the cabin into a dwelling, The property has changed hands several times since, and was purchased by the current owners .. in 197l+. FOOTNOTES: 1.
