INVITES YOU TO THE PORT HACKING OUTRIGGER CANOE CLUB REGATTA 2018 OC1 – OC2 Saturday 17th November 2018 OC6 Sunday 18th November 2018 GUNNAMATTA BAY, CRONULLA NSW SATURDAY 17th November Utilising the wAters of Kurnell, BAte BAy And the Port HAcking River, Port HAcking OCC will be hosting An AOCRA OC1/2 outrigger canoe rAce As pArt of the NSW AOCRA OC1 “Elite RAce Series”. This event will include: OC1/2 Short Course – 8km (Women’s, Men’s & Mixed) OC1/2 Long Course – 19km (Women’s Men’s & Mixed) Elite RAce (2) In the event of extremely poor weAther conditions the courses And distAnces mAy be Altered. OC1/2 PROGRAM OF EVENTS PleAse note: All rAces must stArt on time. RAces will not be delAyed for late stArters. ALL CANOES MUST HAVE; LEG ROPE, LIFE JACKET – paddler to wear (AOCRA Approved PFD’s) MOBILE PHONE or FLARE (Long Course only) CANOES WILL BE CHECKED PRIOR TO RACING OC1 & OC2 Short Course – Women, Men & Mixed; Briefing: 8.30am RAce StArt: 9.00 Am DistAnce: 8km The Course will stArt from the southern end of GunnAmAttA BAy And heAd due eAst from the stArting line towArds Jibbon Point. At Jibbon Point An ama turn And heAd NNE Across BAte BAy. AT the turning buoy, perform A 180 degree ama turn and head SW towArds BAss And Flinders Point At the mouth of the Port HAcking River. TrAvel west to the southern end of GunnAmAttA BAy, non AmA turn And heAd north to the finish At the GunnAmAttA BAths Jetty. OC1 & OC2 Long Course – Women, Men & Mixed; Briefing: 11.30pm Am at Gunnamatta PArk RAce StArt: 1.00 – 2.00pm (dependAnt on wind forecast) DistAnce: 19km The pArticipAnts will enter viA the BonnA Point BoAt RAmp At the western end of the Kurnell beAchfront. PArticipAnts will hAve their canoes scrutinised At this point for the mAndAtory safety equipment. (LifejAcket, leg rope And Mobile Phone/flAre). PArticipAnts will pAddle At A leisurely pAce eAst towArds CAptAin Cooks LAnding PlAce where the stArt boat will be positioned. PArticipAnts will then pAddle eAst out of BotAny BAy pAst the KAmAy BotAny BAy NAtionAl PArk to A buoy thAt will be positioned ApproximAtely 1.5k’s off shore. At this buoy, a non-AmA turn is performed to trAvel SW towArds the mouth of the Port HAcking River At BAss And Flinders Point. At this point they will trAvel west towArd the southern end of GunnAmAttA BAy, non-AmA turn And trAvel north to the finish line At the end of GunnAmAttA BAths Jetty. Ama turn to head NNE towArds BoAt HArbour, stAying insode the breAking wAves of Merries Reef. The canoes perform a 180 degree ama turn and heAd towArds BAss And Flinders Point, stAying well eAst of ShArk IslAnd keeping ShArk IslAnd on the non AmA side. At ShArk IslAnd Turning buoy then heAd bAck towArd BAss And Flinders Point, then to south end of GunnAmAttA BAy, then north through chAnnel And return to GunnAmAttA BAths Alternate Course 2 Start at the Southern end of Gunnamatta Bay and travel east towards Jibbon Point. Ama turn 180 degrees and travel west down the bay toward Deeban Spit. The course will then follow the Port Hacking River to Gymea Bay where a turning buoy will be in place. At the buoy 180 degree ama turn and return through the Port Hacking River. Boat Trailer Unloading / Loading OC 6 TrAilers will be Able to unloAd in the pArk And remAin there for the durAtion of the dAy. CArs Are not permitted to pArk in the grounds of GunnAmAttA PArk. OC1 unloading/rigging/scrutineering There is Ample pArking At the BonnA Point BoAt RAmp And surrounds. CAnoes Are to be rigged on the beAch front And must be scrutinised before entering the water. First Aid/First Response A ProfessionAl LifeguArd will Attend the event from the SutherlAnd Shire Council LifeguArd Service And provide both First Aid And other AssistAnce As required. These personnel Are professionAlly trAined in OceAn Rescue, Senior First Aid And will hAve Access to defibrillAtors if necessary. How to get there GUNAMATTA PARK: GunnAmAtta Park is locAted behind the CronullA TrAin StAtion. The PArk is on Nicholson PArAde, CronullA. As per mAp below Turn Right off the KingswAy onto WilbAr Avenue, proceed to the RoundAbout and turn left onto Croydon Street. Croydon Street turns into CronullA St. At the trAin stAtion. Go strAight through the roundAbout And turn Right onto Nicholson PArAde. KURNELL: BonnA Point BoAt RAmp is At the western end of the Kurnell beAchfront. TAke CAptAin Cook Drive to Kurnell And At the first roundAbout At the intersection of Torres Street turn left. TrAvel west on Torres Street And At DAmpier Street turn right towArds the beAchfront. At Prince ChArles PArAde turn left And the boAt rAmp And lAunching AreA is At the end of this roAdwAy.     Sand Nourishment Forum – Sand Nourishment Reference list October 2013 Updated from Coasts & Ports Conference, Sydney 2013 Potentially Useful Beach Nourishment and Associated Studies/Projects – References Foreword: The Coasts & Ports 2013 Organising Committee introduced a half- day Sand Nourishment Forum comprising a Questions and Answers format directed to an experienced Panel with audience participation to explore and promote the use of sand nourishment as a viable method for managing short term erosion and long term coastal recession. The Forum emanated from great interest in beach nourishment around Australia, with a long history of successful projects from Adelaide to Noosa and major projects on the Gold Coast. The 2013 Conference was launched with a keynote address from Dr Stefan Aarninkhof who was intricately involved in the Delfland Sand Engine project in the Netherlands, which has introduced 21.5M m3 of offshore sands to the Dutch coast to provide coastal protection and prevent coastal inundation. As a precursor to the Beach Nourishment Forum at the Coast & Ports Conference 2013 in Sydney, A. D. Gordon (Forum Moderator) compiled the following list of reference material with contributions from J.T. Carley, E.D. Couriel, A. L. Jackson, A.R Jones, D.B. Lord, A.F. Nielsen, T.D. Shand, R.B. Tomlinson, T. Stul, R. Tucker. The list is intended to be a start on a “live “ document that can be added to, as further reference material becomes available/unearthed. The list has been compiled to assist those carrying out or contemplating beach nourishment, beach scraping and entrance by-passing or back-passing projects. It is hoped that other special interest topics to the coastal and port engineering profession may be run in similar forums as part of the future Coasts & Ports Conference series.

Hello everyone – and a belated welcome to the 2014- 2015 Season – and the first issue of the “Blue & Gold”. We are in full swing for another season of Patrols, Training & Education and Competition with a new Board of Directors (BOD) already fully engaged with pre-season activities and planning and implementing their programs for this season. We have a very good BOD and I welcome several new Members to the BOD and other Members who sit on Committees and hold other positions with the Club. Once again, your Board of Directors will be working to our Club Management Plan 2012-2015 and the key functional areas of: 1. Lifesaving and Patrols 2. Training and Education 3. Competition (Surf Sports) 4. Business and Administration 5. Member Services (Future Function) 6 Community These six functional areas are critical to the successful running and management of our Club and this is an ever changing and dynamic operation with our Directors working on implementing their plans for the season and developing new plans as required to meeting the obligations of SLSNSW and SLSA. Under the leadership of Gavan Duffy, Lifesaving Craig “Styx” McKinniery, Club President. Director and supported by the Lifesaving Team – including Jamie Primer and Kane Hughes, we have 12 successfully held and new Awards gained by many Rostered Patrol Teams, who are now well into the season existing and new Members of North Cronulla SLSC. of patrolling North Cronulla Beach to perform Volunteer I would like to set a target for all of our BOD and Active Patrols on Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays.

Marine Laboratory. Dew's (1959) revision of the Australian Serpulidae did not include the genus Spirorbis, but she noted that it was well represented and listed the references to the five species previously described from the area. MATERIAL AND METHODS All material was collected from the Posidonia sp. beds which extend from the C.S.I.R.O. Marine Laboratory's jetty across the entrance to Gunnamatta Bay in Port Hacking, Sydney.

Between 1883 and 1898, 24 intense tropical cyclones and extra tropical cyclones directly impacted on the southern Queensland and northern New South Wales coasts, with at least 200 fatalities in what was then a sparsely populated area. These events also caused record floods and rainfall, for example Brisbane City experienced its two largest ever floods over this period and Brisbane City set a 24-h rainfall record that still stands today. Additionally, a 24-h rainfall total of 907 mm occurred in a tributary of the upper Brisbane River resulting in a 15-m wall of water advancing down the river. Recent studies have shown that this part of Australia incurs the largest weather-related insurance losses. A major focus in this study is the seas these storms generated, leading to the loss of many marine craft and changes these waves brought to coastal areas. As a famous example of coastal erosion near Brisbane, the continual impacts from large waves caused a channel to form through Stradbroke Island to the open ocean forming two separate islands. Details of how this channel formed are described in relation to the storms. A climatology study of 239 Australian east coast storms that caused severe ocean damage between Brisbane and the Victorian border over the period between 1876 and February 2020 showed that 153 events occurred with a positive Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) trend and 86 events with a negative trend.

    Sydney Southern Beaches NSW02.03.05 Regional Setting The dominant regional processes influencing coastal geomorphology in this region are the humid warm to cool temperate climate, micro-tides, south-easterly Tasman Sea swells, easterly seas, dominantly quartz (terrigenous) sediments with northerly longshore transport in the northern part, and the El Nino Southern Oscillation (driving beach erosion/accretion cycles, cyclone frequency). Regional hazards or processes driving large scale rapid coastal changes include: East Coast Lows (extra-tropical cyclones), mid-latitude cyclones (depressions), and storm surges (<1m). This compartment extends from Cape Banks to Port Hacking Point. Justification of sensitivity Overall rating is a 3, although sand extraction from Kurnell may exacerbate sensitivity of this area to a 4 or 5. There will be continued loss of sand at Towra Point. Other comments The beaches in Botany Bay are relatively low energy, although Lady Robinson Beach on the western side has formed as a sequence of beach ridges, but has experienced episodes of severe erosion in the past (Andrews, 1916). The potential inundation in this area has been studied in a COVERMAR project by Sydney Coastal Councils Group and by CSIRO (see McInnis et al. 2012; and Dall’Osso et al., 2014). Bate Bay contains Cronulla Beach, Sydney’s longest beach. Much of the back barrier area of transgressive dunes has been mined for sand extraction, making this area potentially sensitive (Gordon, 1992). Considered to be eroding with high confidence at geomorphologic and historic scales by Chapman et al. (1982). Roy and Crawford (1980) have studied the geologic history of Kurnell Peninsular and Foster, and others have undertaken several investigations of erosion issues at Bate Bay/Cronulla area (for instance Foster, 1974).
