Haynes 2013 ABSTRACT This dissertation uses Black feminist standpoint theory and feminist geography to construct a new approach for understanding how academically successful African American women students construct and reconstruct their identities while attending predominately White institutions (PWIs). The primary research takes place against the backdrop of an investigation into the lacunae of educational scholarship that examines why African American women are not performing well at PWIs. Many of these studies define Black women as social outsiders, as unprepared, and as lacking academic abilities. This research often fails to ask how Black women characterize their higher educational experiences, and it overlooks the fact that many Black women students not only perform as well as other students but also exceed academic expectations while negotiating an environment that has been historically antagonistic toward them. This qualitative study uses one-on-one interviews of academically successful African American women attending a Midwestern PWI for its primary data. By integrating geographic theories about space with perspectives from Black feminist standpoint theory and intersectionality theory, I demonstrate that Black women at PWIs develop socio-spatial practices that offer a counter-narrative to established negative stereotypes of African American women. I also investigate the ways that color-blind racism influences how these women identify themselves. I conclude by arguing that their standpoint empowers them to be successful, but it also limits their choices. Though ii African American women are influenced by color-blind racism, these women conditionally challenge, reinforce, and reproduce it in their socio-spatial practices. Academically successful women walk a tightrope in higher education, at times silencing their resentment, anger, and anxiety while promoting equality and “sameness” between themselves and White students. iii DEDICATION The Haynes family iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENT It has been a long road to get here, and I am very well aware that I did not get her alone. I remember someone telling me a few years ago that I am not really impressed by most men and that I had high expectations for people. I can honestly say that that is true because of you. I grew up with and sat across the table for a man that is impressive, so I know what a man is suppose to behave. You have always been there for the women in your life, and you wanted the best for us. Based on over five years of in-depth participant observation, the findings shed light on the men’s everyday experiences in and away from the park and uncover social processes and human concerns that resonate well beyond the particulars of the case. Specifically, the dissertation shows how a group of primarily immigrant men make and sustain social ties through their regular involvement in park life. The social life of the park works effectively as a site of network formation and resource exchange because it is made fun, compelling, and revealing. The findings show that people require shared commitments, in this case, a fascination with soccer and beer drinking, to create new relations.

Khemiri and Östlund represent contrasting perspectives and tonalities, yet both artists identify the successful competition for capital as a potentially critical component in achieving access to “Swedishness.” Khemiri and Östlund recognize that race and economics are intertwined in neoliberal arguments, even in Sweden, something their works help to elucidate. The implications of such similar observations from very different artists might go overlooked if discussed in isolation. I argue that it is crucial to analyze the negotiation of identity in these works not merely in abstract economic terms, but through their use of a very specific neoliberal economic discourse.

    Abstract One Love: Collective Consciousness in Rap and Poetry of the Hip-Hop Generation by Austin Harold Hart April, 2012 Thesis Director: John Hoppenthaler Major Department: English (Literature and Poetry) This study aims to offer an understanding of hip-hop culture through which three concepts are elucidated: (1) the existence and dimensions of a collective consciousness within rap and poetry of the hip-hop generation (Allison Joseph, A. Van Jordan, Terrance Hayes, Major Jackson, Taylor Mali, and Kevin Coval); (2) a poetics of rap—to parallel the influence seen/suggested among the selected poets; and (3) an analysis of the manner(s) in which the poetry of these more serious, academic artists reflects an influence of hip-hop culture. My thesis suggests that these poets are indeed influenced by the culture in which they grew up, and in their verse, this influence can be seen through linguistic playfulness, sonic density, layered meaning and usage through form and content, and the connection to a larger cultural, collective consciousness fed by specific social bodies. Poetic analysis, as well as studies of vernacular and oral traditions, has allowed me to explore these concepts and theories from a wider spectrum, and with regard to the work of the poets, an original perspective. Providing a deeper understanding of artists, their identities, places, and dreams within their work, this study begins to offer some insight into notions of the ways in which individuals might participate in cultural conservation.
