(121 responses) Recalling the picture you just viewed regarding your perspective on campus-community relationships, do you have any thoughts to share about what the COMMUNITY could do to improve its relationship with the CAMPUS? (128 responses) MEMBER OF THE COMMUNITY (70 responses) Seek to build more of a relationship with students Attempt to get to know the students better so they are more likely to behave after a night out drinking Community should invite students and faculty to more events. Community should go to events on campus. The community could do more outreach of local events to students, faculty and staff of the campus. I am not aware of the efforts of the community. I know that Scott Zelov has worked towards improving some of the issues I have brought up but I am not aware of recent efforts or how the university staff are involved. I believe the community is already doing their best to have a positive rapport with the campus. include students in community events No Allow a sorority & fraternity "row", rather than disgusting homes scattered throughout the community. National fraternities are very serious about their houses, so i think if the "fraternity houses" were OFFICIAL through Nationals rather than just a large home in bryn mawr that is "student approved" and can t enough students, students would be more closely watched, not just by Villanova, but by the National fraternity executive board. "Student approved housing should need to be evaluated and renewed yearly. A home should only be allowed to be student approved for 2-5 years, and then require a 2-5 year gap where it can not be rented to students. This would require landlords and homeowners to take better care of their homes that they rent to students. Same Put more bars closer to Villanova and farther from where other community members live. See above. Have more commingled events so there is not such division. Maybe focus support around community and campus events that already exist and get local ofcials and campus ofcials aligned. Offer more forums for the two groups to communicate. Offer community events, lecturers, etc. Better sidewalks/more lights to and from town. I think the students are disrespectful and have no regard for the neighbors same as above No Treat college students the same as any other adult. If they violate the rules they should be subject to the same degree of law enforcement and prosecution. Also, the campus leadership needs to take a more active role ensuring that their students are assimilating into the community hosting them as they are visitors and representative of the campus. Law Enforcement also needs to improve its visibility on weekends and nights of larger student presence in the public. I feel the community has given much more to the college than the college gives. If people in the community choose to live close to a University then they have to consider the positive and negative to that decision. the Community should participate in the Campus sponsored free concerts and special events The community could treat students living within their community as neighbors, not temporary intruders. no Community members could get to know their neighbors. In the past I have known the students who live near me and it has helped with the year. That has become less common. Reach out and involve their staff in community education events. Encourage students to join local groups and volunteer efforts to improve neighborhoods. Develop activities and invite students to support non-prots in the area. Set up internship programs to help nonprots. Campus should improve with community The community is welcoming and accommodating to the campus. See my previous answer. Think we are doing the best we can to acomadate the number of students in our community. I don't know. required a Payment in Lieu of Taxes by all colleges in the Township, like Valley Forge Military College has always done...& only half of VFMA is in Radnor Township. Hold joint events, volunteering opportunities None. No My family, neighbors and elected ofcials continually try to develop a relationship with the campus. I think it is time for the campus to reach out to us. Not the students, the administration. Students need to become aware of the issues that they cause within the community. I am a Student at Villanova, and had the privledge of participating in a focus group, and several follow up discussions with neighbors of the university as well as staff. I was not aware of the top complaints from the community. When asked what I though the top complaints were, I thought that house parties and noise from within our homes would be the greatest concern, however, to my surprise, I was told that it was indeed the noise from the streets as students let out from the bars on lancaster avenue. Additionally, the community needs to understand the nature of the town, the college campus atmosphere, and be more willing to collaborate with the university in order to meet an achieved goal, rather than simply demanding and asking for changes without being willing to make changes themselves. Whether community members like it or not, Villanova is part of the community too. Don't put money ahead of the community Township ofcials need to be more involved and not be indifferent to the problems. Far more policing needs to be done. The community should serve on campus. PA special olympics and other events allow the community to work with students and better appreciate the campus! Stop demonizing students for being students. As college towns go, Villanova is an extremely respectful college community compared to other schools. More police enforcement of noise, public drinking laws. Make more late-night friendly student establishments that could serve as alternates to bars Ease building restrictions to allow the Campus to build structures to t the needs of the Campus. Burdensome building codes and difcult approval processes makes it difcult for the Campus to achieve its goals of attacking high quality students and faculty which then hurt the Community in terms of prestige and economic growth. The difcult process and codes breed hostility between the Campus and the Community because each new project requires an extensive and unnecessary process. The community could come to campus more for events, could talk to students that live off campus nearby to create a mutually benecial relationship, and could ask campus students to help with/ attend local school activities, fairs, and sports games. Stop being such dicks No idea but its a growing problem I think the community often complains about the Villanova students, but there is no need to. The students are generally respectful, and a little noise on the weekend doesn't hurt anyone. Same things as mentioned above -- and copied below -- but also having a much more rigid set of regulations that also MUST be enforced. How many times do the police need to show up before action is taken? There are many approaches that could be implemented such as random checks of any student houses by a team that may include campus police, investigaor, etc. -- next, the neighbors should be allowed to rate NOT only the houses (owners/landlords) but also the students -- and this should occur more than once during the typical term from September through June -- and action needs to be able to be taken by the campus (kids getting suspected, parents ned depending on age, evictions, etc.) -- checklists supplied to students by the campus letting them know the rules, trash days, etc. The list goes on in terms of making the landlords as well as the students accountable -- and making Villanova accountable as well -- these are their students and represent the school, their alumni, etc. no We can open our minds each Fall to the possibility that the new group of students will behave well & we can reach out to them & be friendly as well. less frat & sorority houses. put them all somewhere else they can destroy. They have ZERO interest in contributing to their neighborhood. It's the campus' job Give local businesses easier access to the students to advertise our products without overwhelming them. Reporting problems not just to local police but should be area also to report to the Campus Participate in a quarterly town hall. Here in Garrett Hill, we had a welcome picnic in August for students living in the community. I thought that was a nice idea. Respect their time in life.by tolerating some rowdiness. The community has tried to work with Villanova. The CICD was a good example. Instead, Villanova does not come to the table to compromise. They only seem to want to dictate demands. Community Does its best but often to a deaf ear Same thing. Help students to feel comfortable in a safe environment so overall both the school and the community are successful No. Folks in Garrett Hill, for several years a while back, planned a Welcome Back Students dinner which was held at the Radnor United Methodist Church at the start of the school year. The goal was to have students who would be living off-campus in our neighborhood get to know the local residents and vice versa. Humanizing both sides was hoped to engender feelings of respect, which would lead to a more harmonious co-existence.

Based on over five years of in-depth participant observation, the findings shed light on the men’s everyday experiences in and away from the park and uncover social processes and human concerns that resonate well beyond the particulars of the case. Specifically, the dissertation shows how a group of primarily immigrant men make and sustain social ties through their regular involvement in park life. The social life of the park works effectively as a site of network formation and resource exchange because it is made fun, compelling, and revealing. The findings show that people require shared commitments, in this case, a fascination with soccer and beer drinking, to create new relations.

Challenging Swedishness: Intersections of Neoliberalism, Race, and Queerness in the Works of Jonas Hassen Khemiri and Ruben Östlund by Christian Mark Gullette A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Scandinavian Languages and Literatures and the Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender, and Sexuality in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Linda Haverty Rugg, Chair Professor Mark Sandberg Professor Mel Y. Chen Spring 2018 © Christian Mark Gullette 2018 Abstract Challenging Swedishness: Intersections of Neoliberalism, Race, and Queerness in the Works of Jonas Hassen Khemiri and Ruben Östlund by Christian Mark Gullette Doctor of Philosophy in Scandinavian Languages and Literatures and the Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender, and Sexuality University of California, Berkeley Professor Linda Haverty Rugg, Chair This dissertation explores the work of author Jonas Hassen Khemiri and filmmaker Ruben Östlund, examining the ways both artists consistently negotiate racial identification and “Swedishness” in neoliberal economic contexts that are often at odds with other Swedish, exceptionalist discourses of social justice. Khemiri and Östlund represent contrasting perspectives and tonalities, yet both artists identify the successful competition for capital as a potentially critical component in achieving access to “Swedishness.” Khemiri and Östlund recognize that race and economics are intertwined in neoliberal arguments, even in Sweden, something their works help to elucidate. The implications of such similar observations from very different artists might go overlooked if discussed in isolation. I argue that it is crucial to analyze the negotiation of identity in these works not merely in abstract economic terms, but through their use of a very specific neoliberal economic discourse.

WARRIOR BARDS by Kevin McCarthy & Michael E. Tigar A Performance in Six Scenes [Note: This play was originally performed in San Francisco by Kevin McCarthy. It is written for performance by one actor who portrays all five lawyers, using changes of dress, demeanor and style to mark their differences, while preserving the theme that their work is unified. It could be done by a series of actors.] COPYRIGHT (C) 1989 KEVIN MCCARTHY & MICHAEL E. TIGAR ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Warrior Bards, Page 1 [The curtain rises on a stage set with a standup writing desk, a comfortable chair, a lectern, a hall tree, and an easel. On the easel is set a large portrait of Dan O'Connell, in the costume in which we will first see him. The hall tree has hooks to hang coats and hats and a mirror, in order to permit the actor to check his appearance when changing characters. There will also be a low railing to represent a jury rail. Among the props will be a copy of the New York Times for Malone, a copy of a book of judicial decisions, a schoolhouse ruler, and other items.] Scene One [Daniel O'Connell enters, wearing a cloak and shovel hat as depicted in pictures of him. Under the cloak he may have on a barrister's robe, and may then put on a wig. He is large, robust, energetic. He would probably have a habit of running his hands through his hair, which was curled and unruly. He has a gentle, cajoling voice. He may roll his eyes to emphasize a point.] [A lawyer who saw O'Connell (Sheil) describes O'Connell as "five-feet eleven and one- half inches, with a high forehead.

  • Abstract One Love: Collective Consciousness in Rap and Poetry
Abstract One Love: Collective Consciousness in Rap and Poetry of the Hip-Hop Generation by Austin Harold Hart April, 2012 Thesis Director: John Hoppenthaler Major Department: English (Literature and Poetry) This study aims to offer an understanding of hip-hop culture through which three concepts are elucidated: (1) the existence and dimensions of a collective consciousness within rap and poetry of the hip-hop generation (Allison Joseph, A. Van Jordan, Terrance Hayes, Major Jackson, Taylor Mali, and Kevin Coval); (2) a poetics of rap—to parallel the influence seen/suggested among the selected poets; and (3) an analysis of the manner(s) in which the poetry of these more serious, academic artists reflects an influence of hip-hop culture. My thesis suggests that these poets are indeed influenced by the culture in which they grew up, and in their verse, this influence can be seen through linguistic playfulness, sonic density, layered meaning and usage through form and content, and the connection to a larger cultural, collective consciousness fed by specific social bodies. Poetic analysis, as well as studies of vernacular and oral traditions, has allowed me to explore these concepts and theories from a wider spectrum, and with regard to the work of the poets, an original perspective. Providing a deeper understanding of artists, their identities, places, and dreams within their work, this study begins to offer some insight into notions of the ways in which individuals might participate in cultural conservation. • THE NAME and NATURE of POETRY [This Text Prepared from an E-Book Edition At
[p. 4] The question should be fairly stated, how far a man can be an adequate, or even a good (so far as he goes) though inadequate critic of poetry, who is not a poet, at least in posse. Can he be an adequate, can he be a good critic, though not commensurate? But there is yet another distinction. Supposing he is not only not a poet, but is a bad poet! What then? COLERIDGE, Anima Poetae, pp. 127 f. [p. 5] THE NAME AND NATURE OF POETRY [This text prepared from an e-book edition at http://symmachus.wordpress.com/2008] It is my first duty to acknowledge the honour done me by those who have in their hands the appointment of the Leslie Stephen Lecturer, and to thank them for this token of their good will. My second duty is to say that I condemn their judgment and deplore their choice. It is twenty-two years to-day since I last, and first, spoke in this Senate-House; and in delivering my inaugural lecture, and telling this University what it was not to expect from me, I used these words. Whether the faculty of literary criticism is the best gift that Heaven has in its treasuries I cannot say; but Heaven seems to think so, for assuredly it is the gift most charily bestowed. Orators and poets, sages and saints and heroes, if rare in comparison with blackberries, are commoner than returns of Halley’s comet: literary critics are less common. And when, once in a century, or once in two centuries, the literary critic does appear–will some one in this home of mathematics tell me [p.
