Cambodia birding report April-May 2017 Mikko Pyhälä - 28 June, 2017 Photo below: Male White-rumped Pygmy-falcon, endemic to Indochina While on a holiday in Cambodia with my wife Pia, I was able to make exclusively birding trips with guide and facili@es provided by the Sam Veasna Center (SVC) in the North in Preah Vihear Province and in the South-East in Mondulkiri Province, as well as on my own in the South in the Kep Province. I also birded in the gardens of the capital city Phnom Penh. SVC based in Siem Reap is Cambodia’s oldest and perhaps also the most competent birding company having obtained much praise from WWF, UN, GEF, BirdLife and other organiza@ons. They have been successful in establishing community-based lodges and camps with local services, contribu@ng to local conserva@on consciousness, in par@cular for some of the most endangered birds and animals of the planet. SVC excels in training their guides who are very knowledgeable about birds, work well with local communi@es, and are efficient and polite with their clients. SVC has also been able to avoid conflicts with na@onal authori@es. CAMBODIA BIRDING [email protected] !1 Cambodia is a good target for birding trips as it has a large number of endemics and many cri@cally endangered species, also animals such as the Dolphin, and large primates in the Seima forest. I managed to get 45 lifers, almost all of them from my wish-list which was not very long, given that I had birded earlier in South-Asia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. -

Therefore, tools and agents to control this ubiquitous insect that develops and feeds on hundreds of plant species are wanted. We conducted a field survey of P. spumarius eggs in Corsica and provide a first report of Ooctonus vulgatus Haliday, 1833 (Hymenoptera, Mymaridae) as a potential biocontrol agent of P. spumarius in Europe. To allow species identification, we summarized the main characters distinguishing O. vulgatus from other European species of Ooctonus and generated COI DNA barcodes. -

REPRODUCTIVE AND DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY OF GONATOCERUS ASHMEADI, AN EGG PARASITOID OF THE GLASSY-WINGED SHARPSHOOTER Project leader: Cooperator: Mark Hoddle Leigh Pilkington Dept. of Entomology Dept. of Entomology University of California University of California Riverside, CA 92521 Riverside, CA 92521 Reporting period: The results reported here are from work conducted from April 2004 to October 2004. ABSTRACT The reproductive and developmental biology of Gonatocerus ashmeadi Girault, a self-introduced parasitoid of the glassy- winged sharpshooter (GWSS) Homalodisca coagulata Say, was determined at five constant temperatures in the laboratory; 15; 20; 25; 30; and 33°C. Wasps at each experimental temperature were given, on average, between 10 and 15 GWSS eggs per day for its natural life for oviposition. At 30°C, immature G. ashmeadi sustained the highest mortality rates as adult emergence was lowest at this temperature. The largest proportion of female offspring was produced at 25°C and lifetime fecundity was greatest at 25°C. The development time was greatest at 15°C and lowest at 30°C. Mean adult longevity was inversely related to temperature with a maximum of approximately 30 days at 15°C to a minimum of approximately two days at 33°C. INTRODUCTION The mymarid wasp species Gonatocerus ashmeadi Girault, G. triguttatus Girault, G. morrilli Howard, and G. fasciatus Girault are the most common natural enemies associated with the insect pest Homalodisca coagulata in it’s home range of southeastern USA and northeastern Mexico (Triapitsyn and Phillips, 2000). The wasp G. ashmeadi is a self-introduced resident of California and most likely came into the state in parasitized Homalodisca coagulata eggs (Vickerman et al., 2004) and has established widely in association with H. -

It is diagnosed from congeners by, among other characters, the shape of the distal portion of the caudal filament in mature males, which during the reproductive period forms a distinct paddle shape structure. Analysis of the diet between an invasive and native fishes in the Peruvian Amazon. Anthony Mazeroll [email protected] Introduction Non-native species are the second greatest threat to global species biodiversity after land development (Vitousek, D'Antonio, Loope, Rejmanek, & Westbrooks, 1997). Due to the magnitude of this threat, it is vital that the impacts of exotic species are understood. Fish biodiversity is especially threatened by the ecological changes caused by non-native species (Gozlan, Britton, Cowx, & Copp, 2010). Having higher species diversity allows more ecological processes to take place, protecting the resources of that system, and making it more resilient to change (Folke, 2006). Adding outside inputs, such as additional non-native species, into an ecosystem can have beneficial or compromising effects depending on the amount and type. Invasive species have been shown to reduce native species richness and diversity of native organisms. Some have argued that the transportation of species from one ecosystem to another is actually beneficial for diversity, and non-native species are not really an environmental “problem”. Introductions of non-native species increase diversity at a local level because in the short term there will be a lag time where both non-native and natives can coexist (Lodge, Stein, Brown, Covich, Bronmark, Garvey and Klosiewski, 1998). Species entering a new ecosystem have to pass through a gauntlet of barriers before they can become established. The usual progression of invasion is: transportation to the new ecosystem, initial establishment, spread to a larger region, and then naturalization into the new community (Marchetti, Light, Moyle, and Viers, 2004). -
