Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response. -

Romans 1:1-7 “An Introduction to the Book of Romans” WREFC 6/10/18 The Letter of Paul to the Romans is, in the opinion of many, the greatest Book of the New Testament. Romans has been called "The Christian Manifesto”; The Constitution of Christianity"; and "The Cathedral of the Christian Faith". It’s all about the good news of Jesus Christ and the radical changes that take place in the lives of those who trust Him as Savior and Lord. It was this book that brought change to a North African man named Aurelius Augustinius. We know Him as Augustine. In September of 386 AD, this professor of rhetoric Augustine in the city of Milan, Italy was convicted of his sinful lifestyle. While he sat weeping in the garden of a friend, he heard a child sing “Tolle, lege”— that’s Latin for “Take up and read.” Beside Augustine was an open scroll of the Book of Romans. He picked it up and his eyes fell at random on Romans 13:14: “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.” This verse led Augustine to saving faith in Jesus Christ. He went on to become the most influential theologian in church history from the time of Paul to the Reformation. 1,000 years later, a Roman Catholic monk and professor at the University of Wittenburg in Germany, was teaching his students the Book of Romans. As he studied the text, his heart was stirred by the theme of justification by faith in Rom. -

Notes THEODICY B: THE JUSTICE OF GOD (vv. 14–18) Again Paul anticipates his antagonists’ outcry and says it for them in verse 14: “What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all!” Or as Phillips renders it, “Do we conclude that God is monstrously unfair? Never!” At first it appears that Paul does not really answer the question but simply says it is impossible for God to do anything unjust. But the answer is sufficient. Luther comments, “Why, then should man complain that God acts unjustly, when this is impossible? Or, could it be possible that God is not God?” If we say God cannot be fair and be a God who elects, we show a faulty concept of God. If we think of God as an enlarged man, with human emotions and motives, how misled we are. God is infinite—we are finite. He knows all—our knowledge is incomplete and ephemeral. A. W. Tozer wrote: The Church has surrendered her once lofty concept of God and has substituted for it one so low, so ignoble, as to be utterly unworthy of thinking, worshiping men. This she has done not deliberately, but little by little and without her knowledge; and her very unawareness only makes her situation all the more tragic. -

ESV Romans 9:1 I am speaking the truth in Christ- I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit- 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. 4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. 5 To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen. 1) What emotion does Paul have regarding Jewish people? Why do you think he feels this way? 2) Read Isaiah 53:6-8 and Galatians 3:13-14. How does Paul’s desire reflect the reality of Jesus’s experience? 3) According to verses 4-5, what properly belongs to the Israelites? 6 But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, 7 and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but "Through Isaac shall your offspring be named." 8 This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring. -

GETTING ROMANS TO THE RIGHT ROMANS: PHOEBE AND THE DELIVERY OF PAUL’S LETTER Allan Chapple Summary How did Romans reach the people for whom it was intended? There is widespread agreement that Phoebe was the bearer of the letter (Rom. 16:1-2), but little investigation of or agreement about the exact nature of her responsibilities. By exploring the data available to us, especially tha found in Romans 16, this essay provides a reconstruction of the events surrounding the transport and delivery of the letter to the Roman Christians. In particular, it proposes the following: Phoebe conveyed the letter to Rome, probably by sea; the church in Rome at this time consisted of house-churches; Phoebe was to deliver the letter first to Prisca and Aquila and their house-church; Prisca and Aquila were to convene an assembly of the whole Christian community, the first for some time, at which Romans was to be received and read; Prisca and Aquila were to be asked to arrange for copies of Romans to be made; Phoebe was to deliver these copies to other house-churches; and Phoebe was to read Romans in the way that Paul had coached her at each of the gatherings to which she took it. 1. For 2,000 years, sinCe the seleCtion of Abraham, God had dealt almost exClusively with Israel on earth and gave all of His revelations to mankind only to and through them. Why, suddenly, are they not part of God’s plan for mankind? The simple answer is: they Could have been, should have been, but Chose not to be, so God Chose to give to the Gentiles the opportunity to reaCh the rest of the world until the end of times when God will again give Israel, as a nation, additional speCial revelations and signs. Introduction John Calvin was a brilliant, highly intelligent man. But he was convinced that the Holy Spirit working through the faithful study and teaching of the Word of God could accomplish far more than all his brilliance. At one point in his life, Calvin was forced out of Geneva because of civil unrest against him and his leadership. He had been teaching through the book of Romans verse by verse before he left. A few years after he was forced to leave, he was asked to return to Geneva. The Sunday after his arrival, he returned to the church where he had been pastor. -

THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN THE ASSEMBLY: EPISTLES OF PAUL THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN THE ASSEMBLY: EPISTLES OF PAUL JACK P. LEWIS In the Gospels, we see women showing hospitality to Jesus, women supplying him with their means, and women travel- ing with him and being around the cross. We see Jesus healing women, dealing with their spiritual problems, and using women as illustrations in his teaching; but we do not find any instruc- tion about their role in assemblies. The same is true of the book of Acts. Women learn; they obey the gospel; they engage in good works; they show hospitality; and they participate in giving. They are not depicted as being evangelists; they do not exercise miracle-working power; they do not baptize people; they are not elders in the congregations; and they are not pastors. No passage in the Acts of the Apostles specifically deals with the role of women in assemblies. We will turn to the epistles of Paul. Much of what Paul wrote is gender inclusive, relevant to and binding equally on men and women. Paul uses women as illustrations in his teaching. He con- trasts Hagar and Sarah (Gal 4:24ff.) and declares that the Jerusa- lem above is our mother (Gal 4:26). He speaks fondly of women as his fellow workers. The writer of the Epistle to the Hebrews includes women: Sarah, Moses’s mother, Rahab the harlot, and those who received their dead by resurrection (Heb 11:35). The Epistle of James mentions Rahab (Jas 2:25). Peter praises Sarah (1 Pet 3:6) as a model for Christian women.
