Our Castle, Our Town An n 2011 BACAS took part in a community project undertaken by Castle Cary investigation Museum with the purpose of exploring a selection of historic sites in and around into the the town of Castle Cary. archaeology of I Castle Cary's Using a number of non intrusive surveying methods including geophysical survey Castle site and aerial photography, the aim of the project was to develop the interpretation of some of the town’s historic sites, including the town’s castle site. A geophysical Matthew survey was undertaken at three sites, including the Castle site, the later manorial Charlton site, and a small survey 2 km south west of Castle Cary, at Dimmer. The focus of the article will be the main castle site centred in the town (see Figure 1) which will provide a brief history of the site, followed by the results of the survey and subsequent interpretation. Location and Topography Castle Cary is a small town in south east Somerset, lying within the Jurassic belt of geology, approximately at the junction of the upper lias and the inferior and upper oolites. Building stone is plentiful, and is orange to yellow in colour. This is the source of the River Cary, which now runs to the Bristol Channel via King’s Sedgemoor Drain and the River Parrett, but prior to 1793 petered out within Sedgemoor. The site occupies a natural spur formed by two conjoining, irregularly shaped mounds extending from the north east to the south west. The ground gradually rises to the north and, more steeply, to the east, and falls away to the south. -

We have much pleasure in recommencing in this issue our column of Local Notes and Queries which proved such a popular feature of this paper for 20 years, but which we were compelled to discontinue for a time owing to difficulties created by the war. We are particularly anxious that this column should consist as far as possible of notes, queries and replies contributed by our readers themselves, and it will very largely depend upon the assistance we receive from them in this direction whether or not the feature shall be continued. It would of course, be an easy matter for us to get a column of such notes written up each week in our own offices, but this is not our purpose in reintroducing this feature in our paper. We want the column to be almost entirely our readers own column, and if they show by their contributions to it that they appreciate such a feature it will be a pleasure to us to help them in every way we can in making the column interesting and useful. If, on the other hand, the contributions we receive from our readers are so few and far between as to suggest that they take little or no interest in such a column, we shall very soon discontinue it, and insert some other feature in it’s place. The forthcoming South Somerset Local Development Framework (LDF) will be required to allocate new development sites for both housing and employment for the period 2006-2026, with the focus of major growth placed upon Yeovil, thereafter the district’s major towns and rural centres. As part of the process of finding suitable sites for development, a landscape study to assess the capacity of the settlement fringe to accommodate new development in a landscape-sympathetic manner, is commissioned. This will complement other evidence-based work that will contribute to the LDF process. 1.2 PPS 7 commends the approach to the identification of countryside character developed by the Countryside Agency (now Natural England) and suggests that it can assist in accommodating necessary change due to development without sacrifice of local character and distinctiveness. Castlt Caq. BY THE KEV. PREBENDARY MEADE. his town was anciently called Carith, and Kari. It T is situate on the brow of an elevated tract of land, which shelters it from the East, and which is part of that oolite chain which passes through England from the North East to the South West. The soil is a sandy loam, associated with the lower oolite, and was famous for the growth of potatoes before the occurrence of the fatal disease. On the hill above the town the quarries are worked, which supply the building-stone to this neigh- bourhood—a stone possessing that peculiar orange tint, which, in some localities, has given it the name of the “gingerbread rock.” Westward the descent leads im- mediately upon the extended level of the lias ; and, as is usual, the junction of the upper with the lower strata is marked by a great fertility of soil. The traveller who merely passes through the streets of Cary, or looks out of a carriage window at the station, can scarcely imagine how extensive and beautiful is the view from the eminence overhanging the town. Here the inhabitants have, of ancient usage, a pleasant and healthful resort ; where, emerging from the streets below, they may CASTLE CARY. 83 imbibe the purer breeze coming directly from the channel, and watch “ The golden sun Gallop the zodiac in his glistering car.” The objects presenting themselves to view from this point deserve, perhaps, more particular enumeration. The eminence itself is called Lodgehill, probably from its having been formerly the site of some ranger’s dwelling, or hunting box belonging to the lords of Castle Cary. -

Investigating the impact of floodplain woodland on flood flows in the River Cary catchment, Somerset Authors: Huw Thomas, Tom Nisbet Main driver: Flood risk management Project stage: Modelling study Photo 1: River Cary catchment (source: Forest Research) Project summary: The project was established as a modelling study to investigate how the planting of floodplain woodland can affect flood flows. The River Cary is a major tributary of the River Parrett in Somerset (Map 1) with extensive areas suitable for floodplain woodland restoration. A 2.2km long reach was selected to simulate the impact of different woodland planting scenarios on a 1% annual exceedance probability (AEP) event. Hydraulic roughness parameters were changed in one and two-dimensional hydraulic models to represent a shift from grassland to floodplain woodland. The results suggest that there is considerable scope for using strategically placed floodplain woodland to alleviate downstream flooding. Key facts: Floodplain woodland dissipates flood energy, reducing flood velocity and increasing local water depths. This can reduce downstream flood peaks but increase upstream flooding due to the backing up of floodwater. The planting of 133ha of floodplain woodland along a 2.2km reach of the River Cary was predicted to increase local flood storage by 71% and delay the flood peak travel time by 140 minutes. There is a main line train station at Castle Cary (about 10 miles) with trains to London Paddington (1hr 25 mins). Trains also travel from Yeovil to London Waterloo (2 hrs 20 mins). The A303 is two miles south of Somerton and links to the M3 providing access to London by road (125 miles). -
