Introduction Approaching Female Prisoners’ Voices What does the past tell us? In and of itself, it tells us nothing. We have to be listening fi rst, before it will say a word; and even so, listening means telling, and then retelling. Margaret Atwood, In Search of Alias Grace This is a book about women’s voices in the penal sphere and the diffi culty of uncovering them. In 1985, criminologist Pat Carlen published Criminal Women: Autobiographical Accounts, a collection of female off ender life nar- ratives. Designed to give female (ex-)prisoners a sense of agency and the chance to “destroy the mythology which inseminates contemporary ste reo- types of criminal women” (13), the pioneering work aimed to counter the rami- fi cations of “monocausal and global” (9) models of female criminality by drawing attention to the diversity and complexities of women prisoners’ ex- periences through their stories.

    Covert Female Power Mediating Identity in Wilkie Collins’ The Moonstone Sydney Wildman Wilkie Collins’ text The Moonstone is a quintessential detective story which involves the theft of a precious diamond within a dynamic and complex family. The tale is recounted through shifting the narration between numerous characters. On the surface, the story is simple: the infamous Moonstone diamond has been stolen from Rachel Verinder, the heroine of the story. Her love interest, Franklin Blake serves as the hero, acting as the catalyst for the mystery’s narration as he asks the characters to recount “the story of the Moonstone… as far as our personal experience extends, and no farther”.1 He is responsible for piecing the narrative together, while also providing a substantial portion of the novel from his perspective. Indeed, Blake seems determined to solve the mystery. However, the detection work within the novel becomes more complex than a singular search for the diamond. Anne-Marie Beller argues that while “detection is a necessary quest to find the truth, meaning, and stability”2, the detection is not “merely concerned with finding out the truth about others, but more crucially about oneself”.3 Therefore, with Blake at the forefront of the detection, the process develops into a trajectory of self-discovery. Considering Blake’s contradictory sense of self, the mystery instead becomes a narrative about Blake’s identity shift from hero to thief. However, he is unable to uncover his identity alone. Instead, it is the covert forms of power that lower- and upper-class women hold – Rosanna Spearman and Rachel Verinder, respectively – that mediate Blake’s identity shift.

New Zealand was an early emulator of British prostitution regulations, which provoked an organised repeal campaign in the 1880s, yet the colony is seldom considered in these debates. Tracing the dialogue concerning the repeal of contagious diseases legislation between British and New Zealand feminists in the 1890s, this article reaffirms the salience of political developments in the settler colonies for metropolitan reformers. A close reading of these interactions, catalysed by the Auckland Women’s Liberal League’s endorsement of the Act in 1895, reveals recently enfranchised New Zealand women’s desire to act as model citizens for the benefit of metropolitan suffragists.     VENUSTHEATRE Dear Member of the Press: Thank you so much for coverage of The Speed Twins by Maureen Chadwick. I wanted to cast two women who were over 60 to play Ollie and Queenie. And, I'm so glad I was able to do that. This year, it's been really important for me to embrace comedy as much as possible. I feel like we all probably need to laugh in this crazy political climate. Because I thought we were losing this space I thought that this show may be the last for me and for Venus. It turns out the new landlord has invited us to stay and so, the future for Venus is looking bright. There are stacks of plays waiting to be read and I look forward to spending the summer planning the rest of the year here at Venus. This play is a homage, in some ways, to The Killing of Sister George. I found that script in the mid-nineties when it was already over 30 years old and I remember exploring it and being transformed by the archetypes of female characters. To now be producing Maureen's play is quite an honor. She was there! She was at the Gateway. She is such an impressive writer and this whole experience has been very dierent for Venus, and incredibly rewarding. I hope you enjoy the show.
