Indian Journal of Extension Education ISSN 0537-1996 (Print) Vol. 57, No. 2 (April-June), 2021, (63-68) ISSN 2454-552X (Online) Adoption Status of Improved Crop Production Practices in Bt-cotton in Sri Muktsar Sahib, Punjab Karamjit Sharma1*, N.S. Dhaliwal2 and Chetak Bishnoi3 ABSTRACT The present study was conducted to investigate the adoption status of crop production practices in Bt- cotton in Sri Muktsar Sahib District of Punjab. The data were collected from 140 cotton growers through personal interviews during two consecutive years (2016-17 and 2017-18). These data analysis revealed that area under Bt-cotton increased by ~10.9 per cent in 2017-18, compared with 2016-17. A large majority (~80%) of farmers ensured cotton sowing in the recommended time period, with the use of 900-1100 g acre -1 seed rate. This survey showed that farmers did not prefer soaking of seed and refugia in the study region. These results highlight that ~65 per cent of farmers were applying fertilizer-N as per recommended rate, while ~30 per cent farmers were applying fertilizer-P as per recommendation. These (57% of total farmers) farmers were applying 5 irrigations to cotton, while 7 irrigations were applied by only those farmers who had very light textured soils. A great majority of farmers (~83%) were using manual method for weed control in Bt-cotton, and ~44.0 per cent were using 3-5 sprays for management of sucking pests. The seed cotton yield of Bt- cotton prominent hybrids varied from 17.5- 23.5 q ha-1, with a mean 19.4 q ha-1.

J Krishi Vigyan 2020, 8 (2) : 1-7 DOI : 10.5958/2349-4433.2020.00001.X Adoption Status of Improved Rice Varieties and Fertilizer Use in Sri Muktsar Sahib District of Punjab Karamjit Sharma, N S Dhaliwal and Devinder Tiwari Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sri Muktsar Sahib (Punjab) ABSTRACT Rice is major food crop having significance for millions of farmers. It is grown under rice wheat cropping system on vast area in the Indo- Gangetic Plains (IGPs) of India. In Punjab state continuous need was felt to increase area under short duration recommended rice varieties for better crop yield and to save irrigation water. Adoption of these short duration recommended varieties and optimal fertilizer use are major factors that can contribute to enhanced rice productivity in short time span. Periodic data collected from 340 farmers from 2013-14 to 2017-2018 revealed that extent of adoption of improved rice and basmati varieties increased during the survey period. Majority of the farmers were applying excessive fertilizer-N doses to rice crops. Large number of farmers skips phosphorus application to rice and basmati and majority (78%) did not apply potash fertilizers. The data on adoption status may help the extension agencies to focus on bridging the gap to enhance yield of rice and basmati and thus, income of farmers along with conservation of natural resources. Key Words: Adoption. Fertilizer, Improved, Rice, Status, Variety. INTRODUCTION productivity varies widely depending on climatic Rice (Oryza sativa L.) and wheat (Triticum conditions, water availability, soil fertility, fertilizer aestivum L.) are the major food crops in the world.

Introduction Soil geotechnical properties include soil type, bulk density, SPT-N-value, shear strength parameters and Deterministic strategies lie at the basis of virtually consistency limits etc. These properties have each technological science, and geotechnical influence on the soil characteristics as well as engineering is not an exception. However, the management of civil engineering construction importance of explicitly modeling and assessing the projects. The current methods for their determination variability of geotechnical parameters is increasingly are expensive and time consuming. There is a need diagnosed in geotechnical layout and for rapid and fairly accurate methods that can characterization. Site examination and estimation of guarantee speed and allow comparison of point soil properties are fundamental parts of a measurements. geotechnical investigation process. Geotechnical This paper attempts to provide an overview of the engineers must determine the fluctuation of soil main domains of application of statistical based properties while planning and designing any project. techniques to geotechnical data. The study was The statistical methods are advantageous because carried out in Sri Muktsar Sahib District of Punjab natural variability is taken into consideration.
