University of Nevada, Reno THE SECRET MORMON MEETINGS OF 1922 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History By Shannon Caldwell Montez C. Elizabeth Raymond, Ph.D. / Thesis Advisor December 2019 Copyright by Shannon Caldwell Montez 2019 All Rights Reserved UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA RENO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL We recommend that the thesis prepared under our supervision by SHANNON CALDWELL MONTEZ entitled The Secret Mormon Meetings of 1922 be accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS C. Elizabeth Raymond, Ph.D., Advisor Cameron B. Strang, Ph.D., Committee Member Greta E. de Jong, Ph.D., Committee Member Erin E. Stiles, Ph.D., Graduate School Representative David W. Zeh, Ph.D., Dean, Graduate School December 2019 i Abstract B. H. Roberts presented information to the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January of 1922 that fundamentally challenged the entire premise of their religious beliefs. New research shows that in addition to church leadership, this information was also presented during the neXt few months to a select group of highly educated Mormon men and women outside of church hierarchy. This group represented many aspects of Mormon belief, different areas of eXpertise, and varying approaches to dealing with challenging information. Their stories create a beautiful tapestry of Mormon life in the transition years from polygamy, frontier life, and resistance to statehood, assimilation, and respectability. A study of the people involved illuminates an important, overlooked, underappreciated, and eXciting period of Mormon history.

  • Patriarchal Blessings and the Routinization of Charisma
ARTICLES AND ESSAYS Patriarchal Blessings and the Routinization of Charisma Irene M. Bates Patriarchal blessings contemplate an inspired declaration of the lineage of the recipient, and also, where so moved upon by the Spirit, an inspired and prophetic statement of the life mission of the recipient, together with such blessings, cautions, and admonitions as the patriarch may be prompted to give for the accomplishment of such life's mission, it being always made clear that the realization of all promised blessings is conditioned upon faithfulness to the gospel of our Lord, whose servant the patriarch is. THE POLICY OF RECORDING PATRIARCHAL BLESSINGS, copies of which are deposited in the office of the LDS Church Historian, affords a valuable picture of cultural change in the church, perhaps reflective of changes in American society in general. In the interests of privacy, however, the church does not allow access to its copies of blessings, unless there is proof of blood relationship to the recipient. The researcher, therefore, must access blessings recorded in journals, those appearing in other manuscripts, and any blessings which individuals may choose to release for examination and publication. All of the 744 blessings upon which this study is based are drawn from these sources. 1. First Presidency [David O. McKay, Stephen L Richards, and J. Reuben Clark, Jr.] to all stake presidencies, 28 June 1957, in Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine (Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1958), 504. 2. For a valuable exploration of nineteenth-century American culture, see Daniel Walker Howe's introductory essay in Victorian America (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 1976).

Elder Woodruff and Brother Benbow traveled to the Herefordshire area to teach William’s brother, John, and his family. The Benbow brothers then invited the neighbors to join them in hearing what the missionary had to say. As a result, 13 people were baptized in this pond on the Benbow farm. They also introduced Elder Woodruff to their former congrega- tion: over 600 people who had formed their own church, the United Brethren. All but one was eventually baptized. Later that year they deeded their Gadfield Elm chapel to the Church. See “To Fill the Earth,” page 24. Liahona, July 2010 24 MESSAGES 18 Choose the Temple DEPARTMENTS By Richard M. The previous summer, Allied Armies, under Dwight D. Eisenhower, landed in Normandy and began driving toward the Fatherland. The Red Army had been pushing west toward Berlin since its victory over the final German offensive at the Battle of Kursk in August 1943. On April 30, Hitler committed suicide in his bunker, and Germany surrendered seven days later. War continued on the other side of the globe. • Byu Religious Education FALL 2017 REVIEW
byu religious education FALL 2017 REVIEW CALENDAR COMMENTS INTERVIEWS & SPOTLIGHTS STUDENT & TEACHER UPDATES BOOKS Becoming Scholar-Teachers Recently retired religious educator Kent P. Jackson message from the deans’ office Thinking Globally at the RSC n our day, it seems, everyone is thinking global. INowhere is global perspective more exciting than in the context of the gospel. The story of Church expansion in the international setting over the past several decades has been truly phenomenal. A recently published RSC volume, The Worldwide Church, indicates that over the last thirty years the Church has grown abroad over 500 percent. Fortuitously, this period of growth has coincided with the emergence of the Religious Studies Center as a significant publisher of Church history. As we reflect on the recent growth of the Church, we wonder what the membership of the Church will look like in the coming decades. The answer to this question has important implications for the RSC and its mission to “encourage and publish faithful scholarship.” Publishing works on global Church history and advancement of the Church worldwide has been a key commitment of the RSC. The list of recent RSC publications dedicated to such history includes Mormons in the Piazza: History of the Latter-day Saints in Italy, The Field Is White: Harvest in the Three Counties of England, Voice of the Saints in Taiwan, and Canadian Mormons.
