Celebrating Beate Sirota Gordon
My first international performance was in America, and thanks to Gordon-san, it was a truly encourag- Asia Society ing experience. Despite the fact that she was such an important woman who had been highly involved presents in the drafting of Japan’s constitution, she was most friendly to us. I believe the success of such a long 68-day American tour can be attributed to the careful attention paid by Gordon-san. Since that time, Awaji Puppet Theater has performed all around the world, and researchers and students from abroad have also come to Awaji to study. She opened the door for Awaji puppets to the world. We pray that Celebrating her soul may rest in peace. —Tsurusawa Tomoji - Living national treasure Beate Sirota Gordon ————————————————————————————————————— At a time when it was commonly thought that only men perform in Japanese tradition performing arts, Gordon-san showed a real interest in Awaji Puppet Theater where the female members’ roles are sig- nificant. She always praised me after seeing my stage performance as a chanter. That gave me great encouragement for the next performance. Even now when I recall that performance at Carnegie Hall, I am nearly moved to tears. As a professional performing artist, I truly appreciate the invaluable oppor- tunities that Gordon-san gave to us. —Takemoto Tomokimi ————————————————————————————————————— About Asia Society Asia Society is the leading educational organization dedicated to promoting mutual understanding and strengthening partnerships among peoples, leaders and institutions of Asia and the United States in a global context. IPG Spring 2020 Classical Music and Instruction Titles - December 2019 Page 1
Classical Music & Instruction Spring 2020 {IPG} Vaughan Williams Composer, Radical, Patriot - a Biography Keith Alldritt Summary The ground-breaking biography of Ralph Vaughan Williams reveals more than any other the man behind the music. In this new paperback edition, the author examines the considerable range of Vaughan Williams's work, from the English pastoral tradition to Modernism, and shows how Vaughan Williams was influenced by the Boer War, the economic depression after World War I, the deprivations of the Blitz, and the austerity of the Cold War. He also reveals how the greatest influence on Vaughan Williams's music and creative development was his personal life, involving his seemingly secure marriage and an equally enduring love affair. The author shows how these reflected both the stability and cutting-edge aspects of his music.Like a Crowood Press great symphony, this book ranges from doubt to inspiration.
