Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) operates from four geographical localities, each having its own challenges and risk. An overview of each of these localities is taken and then built upon in a more detailed review of each individual fire station area. The individual station risk profiles detail the current operational resources available on each fire station. Details are also be provided in relation to the actual availability of these resources over a recent twelve month period. The types and number of operational responses made by the fire crews on every Fire Station is assessed and an analysis of the casualties as a result of fire or road traffic collisions has been provided. Our prevention activity in terms of the number of Home Fire Safety Visits (HFSV) carried out within each Ward area is considered and all of this information will be looked at critically in order to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our operational response. -

Chartered Accountants, The Old Police Station, Church Street, Ambleside, Cumbria LA22 0BT Website www.hawksheadgrammar.org.uk History , Objectives and Activities Hawkshead Grammar School Foundation was set up by in 1585 by Edwin Sandys, Archbishop of York, under Letters Patent from Queen Elizabeth I, for the purpose of running a boys Grammar School. It did so for over 300 years until the school closed in 1909. The Foundation now runs the school as a museum and continues to provide educational and vocational grants (known as Sandys Exhibitions) to young people from the Ancient Parish of Hawkshead. It also owns and lets various properties in the village. These rents together with entrance fees to the museum provide its main source of income. Management and governance arrangements The Governors normally meet twice a year (usually in October and April) to consider grant applications and to manage the affairs of the foundation. -

“From ‘Humanist’ to ‘Godly’?’: The Changing Social Function of Education in Early Modern English Grammar Schools” Emily Lynn Hansen PhD University of York History April 2015 Abstract This thesis explores the social function of England’s grammar schools between approximately 1480 and 1640, and how this changed due to the influences of both humanism and religious reform. It explores the grammar school curriculum, including instruction in Latin grammar and in rhetoric, as well as the teaching of Greek, religious instruction, and the general ‘experience‘ of attending school in the early modern period; it also addresses the process of founding and administering a school, the role of the schoolmaster, and the overall purpose of grammar school education, and who within society was able to benefit from that education. This thesis argues three main points: the first is that, despite becoming part of an educational ‘framework’ which was meant to help encourage religious understanding, the religious instruction found in a grammar school was in fact a very small proportion of the curriculum compared to the study of classical literature. Second, despite contemporary criticism of the humanist curriculum of grammar and rhetoric taught in the grammar schools, this curriculum remained in place continuously throughout the early modern period. Third, the definition of an ‘educated’ person was someone who had received instruction in the grammatical and rhetorical curriculum of the grammar schools, whether this was in a grammar school itself, or from a private tutor. The grammar school curriculum, and the ideal educated person which it was meant to produce, was kept very separate from other subjects, such as mathematics and modern languages and instruction in the vernacular. -

Early life The second of five children born to John Wordsworth and Ann Cookson, William Wordsworth was born on 7 April 1770 in Wordsworth House in Cockermouth, Cumberland[1] —part of the scenic region in northwest England, the Lake District. His sister, the poet and diarist Dorothy Wordsworth, to whom he was close all his life, was born the following year, and the two were baptised together. They had three other siblings: Richard, the eldest, who became a lawyer; John, born after Dorothy, who went to sea and died in 1805 when the ship of which he was Master, Earl of Abergavenny was wrecked off the south coast of England; and Christopher, the youngest, who entered the Church and rose to be Master of Trinity College, Cambridge.[2] Their father was a legal representative of James Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale and, through his connections, lived in a large mansion in the small town. -
