DIRECTORY The Feast and of the Month Fr. Jerry Hall Priest St. Nicholas Planas March 2 Fr. Nick Manuel Pastoral Assistant Dn. Mark Studebaker Deacon Barbara Pryor Office Manager Chad Hay Neochoros & Custodian Steve Hadgis Choir Director St. Nicholas was born in Naxos in 1851. His parents, captain John and Augustina, were quite well off but were also good people, with the simple and pure soul which distinguishes island people. They had their own PARISH COUNCIL estate, with a little chapel in the middle of it by the name of President, Denis Van Doros Nicholas. Throughout his childhood, St. Nicholas would hide in the chapel Vice President, Detorakis wearing a bed sheet, and he would chant whatever he knew, as he was still a small child. At fourteen, his father died, and he and his mother Secretary, Jennifer Matheos relocated to Athens. Treasurer, Maria Detorakis In Athens, he nurtured his love for the Lord, and (after being married to Past President, Frank Pangas a good girl from Naxos), was ordained to the Holy Priesthood. However, soon after his wife fell asleep in the Lord, leaving St. Nicholas and their Members son to God’s care. He lost his home when he had put it up as collateral Christina Barry to save a friend from a loan and was forced to live simply. St. Nicholas Jonathon Bollas served the parishes of St. Panteleimon in Neo Kosmo, and later St. John Georgette Constantinou in Vouliagimeni. Each parish was quite small – neither one having even Susan Pappas Earle 20 families. But they were full in their liturgical life and practice. For fifty consecutive years he liturgized daily from 8.a.m. until 2.p.m., in snows, in Angela Jumbert revolutions. Not even with the invasion of the Anglo-French in 1917 did Maria Nicol he interrupt his series of Liturgies. As a confessor he was not strict about Alex Nicolozakes fasting, though when it concerned himself, he was very strict. On March Christine Salem 2, 1932, however, his holy life reached its end. He liturgized for the last Nick Stavrakis time on the Sunday of the Prodigal Son. As soon as he consumed the Holy Gus Tsesmelis Cup, he suffered a light fainting and was transported home. He gave up his Maria Williams holy soul to Him Whom he had worshipped his whole life long. Guard your eyes from what you see And your ears from what you hear How do we proceed For this affects us all Up this great steep path of Lent? both far and the near Looking left and right Not knowing where to go Seek not your will For this leads astray Up, up, we shall proceed We must find God and His plan Hurry do not tarry Obey, obey, obey Don’t look down For the answer rests contrary Comfort your brothers and sisters In Christ we are one How do we proceed For if we are far apart In loneliness and seclusion? The devil would have won So far apart When we should be one in Communion Take heart dear ones For the struggle is gain How do we proceed And life abides forever to see the beauty In the glorious unstained While lying in the grave? In what we thought was our duty Christ is Risen, Sing aloud Sing! Sing, sing it so proud Do not fret my beloved Draw nearer still For joy comes in the morrow The Lord is with us and will never be unfound Rise up, dust yourself off For the Lord will come and lead us out of the trough Keep this in your heart Let it never fade Be still and seek God For His glory will guide you For that is where Christ abides Up, up and away Slow down and live quietly And experience the glory reside

He lives not in society’s cares Nor our fears or our troubles In fact he lives Within our struggles

Bridle your tongue And look inward towards the light

TRIODION. On February 21, we open the Triodion book which is one of the Orthodox service books used from Sunday of the Pharisee and Publican, ten Sundays before Easter, all through Lent, and through Holy Saturday. It is often called the “fasting or penitential Triodion” because it is used during the Lenten period and reminds us with its hymn that the way of repentance is the main path of our Lenten journey as we prepare to celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord.

ALL SOULS SATURDAYS will be held at the end of the Divine Liturgy on Saturdays, March 6, March 13, and March 20. You are asked to pause and remember your deceased loved ones, relatives and friends, by mailing or bringing us the form with their FIRST NAME ONLY so they may be commemorated at these services.

TRIODION HYMNS We see the exalted honor that comes through humility, and the grievous fall that comes through pride; let us, then, emulate the good actions of the Publican and hate the evil sin of the Pharisee.

O Jesus my God, as the Prodigal Son now accept me also in repentance. All my life I have lived in carelessness and provoked Thee to anger.

Unworthy though I be, may I also hear Thy voice, so greatly desired, that calls Thy to joy, and may I attain the ineffable blessing of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Due to the pandemic the response to our 2021 campaign has been slower than usual. Please help us have a more accurate expectation about our parish donation income by returning your 2021 commitment card to the office.

The Journey Is Well Underway! Through your generosity, Fr. Jerry and Fr. Nick have (virtually) visited many monasteries and sketes of Mount Athos since their departure last month! Let’s all join in the effort to complete their journey and bring them home on Cheesefare Sunday (March 14), in time for the start of Great Lent!

• As a reminder, monetary donations from Annunciation family and friends advance the Fathers to each location on the Holy Mountain. Every $100 (cumulative) received will send them to their next destination. • You can contribute via PayPal [email protected] and Venmo @Maria-Moore-131. All proceeds go directly into Philoptochos account. You can also send your donation to the Church office (see form below). • Follow their journey via the “live” map on Facebook, and also on the Annunciation website, annunciationakron.org , to learn more about the Holy Mountain and the sites our priests have visited.

Philoptochos depends on the generosity of the community to support its many charitable projects. This will be our only fundraiser this year. We thank you for your support, and for joining us on this virtual journey!

March Monthly Sunday School Newsletter

Dear Families,

We are looking forward to warmer weather and preparing for our Lenten season. The first Sunday of lent (Orthodox Sunday), will look different this year but we ask that you have your child bring an icon with them to Zoom on Sunday, March 21st. We are successfully impacting so many children in our community and your continued support of our program is so necessary and appreciated.

If you haven’t had the chance to see our Sunday School room progress, enjoy the before and during photos below. Cathy Livadas, Maria Williams and I are continuing to make progress on the renovations. The former library will now serve as an Orthodox Learning Center and our High School classroom. We envisioned this being a resource center for all parishioners. Stay tuned for a Book Drive we will be having soon to help update the resources materials for EVERYONE! Across the hall final details are being worked out now for a renovation start date of June. The vision is to have a media center for our community to use. Thank you to all who have been involved in this process. Our children and ALL parishioners will greatly benefit from these spaces.

In Christ, Amanda Strickler
