March 2021 | Volume 58: Issue 3 DIRECTORY The Feast and Icon of the Month Fr. Jerry Hall Priest St. Nicholas Planas March 2 Fr. Nick Manuel Pastoral Assistant Dn. Mark Studebaker Deacon Barbara Pryor Office Manager Chad Hay Neochoros & Custodian Steve Hadgis Choir Director St. Nicholas was born in Naxos in 1851. His parents, captain John and Augustina, were quite well off but were also good people, with the simple and pure soul which distinguishes island people. They had their own PARISH COUNCIL estate, with a little chapel in the middle of it by the name of Saint President, Denis Van Doros Nicholas. Throughout his childhood, St. Nicholas would hide in the chapel Vice President, Michael Detorakis wearing a bed sheet, and he would chant whatever he knew, as he was still a small child. At fourteen, his father died, and he and his mother Secretary, Jennifer Matheos relocated to Athens. Treasurer, Maria Detorakis In Athens, he nurtured his love for the Lord, and (after being married to Past President, Frank Pangas a good girl from Naxos), was ordained to the Holy Priesthood. However, soon after his wife fell asleep in the Lord, leaving St. Nicholas and their Members son to God’s care. He lost his home when he had put it up as collateral Christina Barry to save a friend from a loan and was forced to live simply. St. Nicholas Jonathon Bollas served the parishes of St. Panteleimon in Neo Kosmo, and later St. John Georgette Constantinou in Vouliagimeni. Each parish was quite small – neither one having even Susan Pappas Earle 20 families. But they were full in their liturgical life and practice. For fifty consecutive years he liturgized daily from 8.a.m. until 2.p.m., in snows, in Angela Jumbert revolutions. Not even with the invasion of the Anglo-French in 1917 did Maria Nicol he interrupt his series of Liturgies. As a confessor he was not strict about Alex Nicolozakes fasting, though when it concerned himself, he was very strict. On March Christine Salem 2, 1932, however, his holy life reached its end. He liturgized for the last Nick Stavrakis time on the Sunday of the Prodigal Son. As soon as he consumed the Holy Gus Tsesmelis Cup, he suffered a light fainting and was transported home. He gave up his Maria Williams holy soul to Him Whom he had worshipped his whole life long. On February 21, we open the Triodion book which is one of the Orthodox service books used from Sunday of the Pharisee and Publican, ten Sundays before Easter, all through Lent, and through Holy Saturday. It is often called the “fasting or penitential Triodion” because it is used during the Lenten period and reminds us with its hymn that the way of repentance is the main path of our Lenten journey as we prepare to celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord. ALL SOULS SATURDAYS will be held at the end of the Divine Liturgy on Saturdays, March 6, March 13, and March 20. You are asked to pause and remember your deceased loved ones, relatives and friends, by mailing or bringing us the form with their FIRST NAME ONLY so they may be commemorated at these services. TRIODION HYMNS We see the exalted honor that comes through humility, and the grievous fall that comes through pride; let us, then, emulate the good actions of the Publican and hate the evil sin of the Pharisee. O Jesus my God, as the Prodigal Son now accept me also in repentance. All my life I have lived in carelessness and provoked Thee to anger.
