Initially we simply planned to report on the advances and perspectives of our research activity in the Kouris river valley. As soon as the idea of the meeting was launched and advertised it was found appropriate to enlarge the horizon and to include in the discussion further issues on Cypriote Archaeology, History and Philology. It will, thus, be seen that starting from the Kouris river valley a kind of small overview on the Cypriote history and archaeology has been put together. Four of the contributions appearing in this work are specifically concerned with the Kouris River Valley Project. After a general presentation and a discussion of the historical motivations of the re- search (Anna Margherita Jasink), the first results of the survey on the valley and of the excavation at Erimi-Laonin tou Porakou have been discussed together with a review of the previous archaeological investigations in the area (Luca Bombardieri). These wider and comprehensive topics are flanked by more specific issues. A discussion concerning the use and application of peculiar methodologies to ancient landscape in the Kouris valley area is presented by Oliva Menozzi, Domenico Fossataro and Serena Torello di Nino; a combined remote-sensing, aerial photography, DEM and GIS analyses has been outlined and the preliminary assessment results are discussed in details. A wider application of a multi-layers GIS System dedicated to fortified settlements has been highlighted as well. A further contribution concerns the archaeometric analyses (chemical-physical and petrological) of the Red Poli- shed ware assemblage coming from the Kouris valley survey (Francesca Chelazzi and Patrizia Davit). A definition of afabrics classification has been pointed out as a starting point for a wider analysis of the technological aspects of the Red Polished ware production in the area. We are very pleased to have hosted further communications still related to the Kouris area. Pavlos Flourentzos’ paper concerns the new data resulting from the recent rescue-excavations project carried out by the Department of the Antiquities of Cyprus in the area of Erimi-Kafkalla and Erimi-Pitharka. The excavations revealed a large settlement and cemetery area, widely occupied from Early and Middle Bronze Age period to the Iron Age and later on till the Roman period. Particularly the area of Erimi- Pitharka shows interesting features related to a Late Bronze Age-Iron Age occupation, interpreted by Flourentzos as a possible «Late Bronze Age Kourion». Furthermore, a new overview on the 19th Century excavations carried out by the British Museum in the area of Episkopi-Bamboula is proposed by Tho- mas Kiely, in the wider perspective of an interesting discussion of settlement systems in Kourion area during the Late Cypriote II-III periods. A preliminary study presented by Ariane Jacobs during the meeting in Florence and devoted to the analysis of the Plain ware from Alassa-Pano Mantilaris will be shortly published elsewhere in a final version. The work fo- cuses on the interesting transitional Late Bronze-Iron Age sequence of occupation evidenced at Tell Afis (Syria); it largely contributes to the recent discussion about the role of North Levant within the eastern Mediterranean exchanges system during the so-called «Dark Age», as pointed out by the new evidences coming from Cilicia, Amuq plain and coastal Syrian area (Ras Ibn Hani, Tell Kazel, Tell Tweini). An assessing method dedicated to the mortuary assemblages of Enkomi tombs has been presented by Giampaolo Graziadio and Elisabetta Pezzi. A preliminary assessment of funerary assemblages into main «Selected Groups», «Mixed Mono-phase Groups» and «Mixed Multi-phase Groups» has been proposed, as a result of a work in progress. The focus of the study was upon the analysis of the body of evidences (sampled by the «Selected Groups» plus a substantial percentage from «Mixed Mono- phase Groups») according to a classification system based on three main Functional Categories, whose chronological variations throughout the long term use of the intra-settlement cemetery can produce significant data to interpret development and changes within the funerary ideology of the Late Cypriote community of Enkomi. The dichotomy of symbolic values (status indicators, religious or ritual use) and utilitarian functions (Tablewares, Perfumed Oil/Ointment Containers) within the analysis of grave goods assemblages acquires a new meaning through the definition ofprevailing values, which suggests (without any rigid scheme) an interesting approach to the funerary ceremonial performances. Two papers are dedicated to the History of Cypriot Antiquities Collecting in Italy, mostly in Tuscany. Silvana Di Paolo presented an interesting profile of Cavalier Riccardo Colucci, Italian Consul in Nicosia in the 1869-1872; this study outlines the intense activity of the Florentine Diplomat in Cyprus and his role within the European raising interests for the Ancient Cypriot Civilization during the 19th Century. The paper by Marco Bettelli and Fulvia Lo Schiavo is specifically dedicated to the Cypriot Collection of the National Archaeological Museum of Florence, focusing

    ERIMI-LAONIN TOU PORAKOU (LIMASSOL, CYPRUS): RADIOCARBON ANALYSES OF THE BRONZE AGE CEMETERY AND WORKSHOP COMPLEX C Scirè Calabrisotto1,2 • M E Fedi3 • L Caforio3,4 • L Bombardieri1 ABSTRACT. The site area of Erimi-Laonin tou Porakou (Limassol, Cyprus) has been surveyed and systematically exca- vated since 2007 as a joint research project of the University of Florence and the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus. A focused investigation was dedicated to analyzing funerary evidence from the southern Cemetery (Area E), where 7 single- chamber graves were excavated. The offering goods assemblages from the burials point to a general date ranging from Early to Late Bronze Age I, and draw a sequence of use that is contemporary to the stratigraphic deposits from the top mound Work- shop Complex (Area A). During the 2010 field season, charcoal samples from the Workshop Complex and bone samples from the skeleton remains of 2 burials (tombs 228, 230) were opportunely taken for radiocarbon analyses. 14C dating was per- formed at the AMS-IBA Tandetron accelerator of the INFN-LABEC Laboratory in Florence. This paper will discuss the results of the 14C analyses and compare them with the archaeological evidence in order to outline a chronological sequence for the settlement and cemetery areas at Erimi-Laonin tou Porakou, thus collecting further data on the development and pat- tern of occupation of the Early to Late Cypriote period in the Kourion area. INTRODUCTION Erimi-Laonin tou Porakou is located in southern Cyprus, in the Limassol District, lying on a high plateau on the eastern slope of the Kouris River, facing the modern Kouris Dam to the south (Cadas- tral Sheet LIII/46, Plots 331–336, 384; 344243N, 325523E), just on the border between the Ypsonas and Erimi villages (Figure 1a).

The Water Development Department (WDD) is responsible for implementing the water policy of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment with the aim of providing effective protection, rational development and sustainable management of the water resources in Cyprus. The enforcement of the Integrated Water Management Law (79(I)/2010) on 15 November 2010, opened up new horizons but also presented new challenges for the Department. According to the Law, the integrated management of water is assigned to the WDD, in the framework of the Government general Water Policy, as determined by the Council of Ministers. The ratification of the above Law by the Parliament of Cyprus, constitutes a historical development, as it addresses the problem of fragmented responsibilities and powers regarding water management among various Departments, which resulted in waste of resources, isolated handling of problems and ultimately in the inability to exercise an integrated, rational and effective management of all water resources. The vision of the WDD is the sustainable development, protection and management of the water resources with the aim to secure adequate quantities of good quality water for all uses, in the framework of a modern, flexible and effective organisation. In this context, the competencies of the Department cover a wide and varied range, including the following: a) Collection, processing, classification and recording of hydrological, hydro-geological, geotechnical and other data, which are necessary for: i) the protection and improvement of the qualitative and quantitative status of the surface and ground water bodies and ii) the study, maintenance and safety of development projects.

Ántoniadou (Division of Design) Cover Photograph: Laying of main conveyor FOREWORD Water resources development in Cyprus initially focused on groundwater and until 1970 groundwater was the main source of water supply for both drinking and irrigation purposes. As a result almost all aquifers were seriously depleted because of over pumping and seawater intrusion was observed in most of the coastal aquifers. The increase of population as well as the increase in the tourist and industrial activities have led to an increase in the demand for water and have created an acute shortage of potable water. Under these conditions, the implementation of the Southern Conveyor Project was a necessity and a basic prerequisite for the further agricultural and economic development of the island. The Southern Conveyor Project is the largest water development project ever undertaken by the Government of Cyprus. The basic objective of the project is to collect and store surplus water flowing to the sea and convey it to areas of demand for both domestic water supply and irrigation. Basically the project aims at the agricultural development of the coastal region between Limassol and Famagusta, as well as to meet the domestic water demand of Limassol, Larnaca, Famagusta, Nicosia, a number of villages and the tourist and industrial demand of the southern, eastern and central areas of the island. The total cost of the project is estimated at C£163 million approximately.

    The Kouris river valley project: an introduction Anna Margherita Jasink (Università di Firenze) 1. Introduction This opening scientific contribution of the Meeting has the purpose to present as a whole our Project on the Kouris river valley (KVP), focusing the attention on the reasons of our interest in this Cypriote region, the historical implications of our researches, and the basic role of Cyprus inside the Mediter- ranean basin. The KVP appears as a natural consequence of our previous and actual interest on the connections which linked the Minoan and Mycenaean world to the Near Eastern countries facing the Mediterranean sea, during the second millennium B.C. In the course of our first visit in Cyprus in 2006 the idea was developed to investigate a specific area in Cyprus which looked to have requirements to become a main example for a research of this typol- ogy: a valley around a river connecting the Troodos massif with the sea, with settlements on the long period, with sites and necropoles already investigated, but still needing an overall study and with some uninvestigated parts. Our project in the following two years, 2007 and 20081, exceeded expectations, probably for the convergence and the contribution of various scientific interests and expertises into an organic and effective structure. In the satellite image (Fig. 1) the valley object of our research is localized: it stretches in the south- western area of Cyprus, in the Limassol district. The Kouris river flows down from the southern slopes of the Troodos massif and reaches the sea coast in the neighbourhood of the Classical site of Kourion.
