M. van Leusen Wroxeter's Paradox The common perception ofWroxeter is that it occupied an anomalous position as the fourth largest Roman town in Britain set within a landscape apparently practically devoid of any of the normal accoutrements of Romanized rural society (figure I). This creates a paradox in that, in all other Roman towns, there seems to be a direct relationship between the size of a town and the degree of Romanization in its hinterland. Ray Laurence has recently highlighted this perception in his study of Pompeii, concluding that " we cannot divide the city from the countryside, nor the countryside from the city.

Planning for a flourishing Shropshire in the Burnell and Severn Valley Local Joint Committee area This leaflet asks your views on Issues and Options for an important Development Plan Document (DPD), called the “Site Allocations and Management of Development DPD”. It is important that you get involved. This is about the places where you live, shop, play, go to school, work, travel, walk... things will change - but together we can try to ensure that it is for the better. 1 Issues and Options for the Site Allocations and Management of Development DPD Introduction Your views This Development Plan Document (DPD) is very important, and will shape your local area over the years ahead. This is your first opportunity to influence it, at the earliest stage in its preparation. We are interested in your views, concerns and aspirations for the future of Shropshire and in particular the parts that you know well. Meeting Shropshire’s development needs This consultation will shape the second Development Plan Document of the Shropshire Local Development Framework. It will identify sites and detailed policies to implement the first DPD, the Core Strategy. The Core Strategy sets out Shropshire’s development needs for the period 2006- 2026. To provide sufficient housing for our changing needs, we require around 27,500 new homes, plus up to 1,000 homes in eastern Shropshire to meet the needs of servicemen and women and about 113 caravan pitches for gypsies and travellers. To ensure a vibrant economy we need up to 290 hectares of land for employment development, provision for retail and town centre uses, and sites for sand and gravel quarrying.

FISHING GUIDE 1997/98 A Guide to day ticket fisheries in the Midlands A GUIDE WELCOME FOR ANGLERS "I am privileged to have the opportunity of introducing the latest edition of this ever popular Fishing Guide published by the M idlands Region o f the Environment Agency. I believe this Guide, together with other lines of communication such as the ‘Fisheries News’ magazine which is freely available, offers reassurance to anglers and other river users that the Agency’s commitment to safeguarding and improving the water environment is as strong as ever. I can assure you that there is a real awareness within the Agency of the vital environmental role anglers play which can be enhanced still further by anglers continuing to both support the work of Fisheries staff and to provide information on the health of our rivers. Real benefits have resulted from this partnership to date including improvements to fish habitat, river water quality and river flows. This partnership is one which the Agency wishes to encourage and considers must continue if together we are to secure the long term well-being of our fisheries for both present and future generations. I ask all recipients of this guide to help the Agency respond to the environmental challenges which lie ahead by keeping us informed about any potential problems identified.” Best wishes and tight lines. • Consultation Paper Poor Relief – Proposed Repeals
Statute Law Repeals: Consultation Paper Poor Relief – Proposed Repeals SLR 03/09: Closing date for responses – 30 October 2009 BACKGROUND NOTES ON STATUTE LAW REPEALS (SLR) What is it? 1. Our SLR work involves repealing statutes that are no longer of practical utility. The purpose is to modernise and simplify the statute book, thereby reducing its size and thus saving the time of lawyers and others who use it. This in turn helps to avoid unnecessary costs. It also stops people being misled by obsolete laws that masquerade as live law. If an Act features still in the statute book and is referred to in text-books, people reasonably enough assume that it must mean something. Who does it? 2. Our SLR work is carried out by the Law Commission and the Scottish Law Commission pursuant to section 3(1) of the Law Commissions Act 1965. Section 3(1) imposes a duty on both Commissions to keep the law under review “with a view to its systematic development and reform, including in particular ... the repeal of obsolete and unnecessary enactments, the reduction of the number of separate enactments and generally the simplification and modernisation of the law”. Statute Law (Repeals) Bill 3. Implementation of the Commissions’ SLR proposals is by means of special Statute Law (Repeals) Bills. 18 such Bills have been enacted since 1965 repealing more than 2000 whole Acts and achieving partial repeals in thousands of others. Broadly speaking the remit of a Statute Law (Repeals) Bill extends to any enactment passed at Westminster. Accordingly it is capable of repealing obsolete statutory text throughout the United Kingdom (i.e.
