In 1997, the state legislature passed laws allowing the formation of charter schools in the State of Nevada. Although sponsored by the local school district, charter schools maintain their own board of directors and operate independent of the district's policies and regulations.

Charter schools are required to abide by state and county laws, but are given a great deal of latitude in the day-to-day operation of the school. The purpose of such alternative education is to improve education via a setting where innovation, experimentation and research can identify effective methods of instruction and then share those findings with more traditional classroom programs.

Staying Hydrated Staying Dehydration in a desert climate can be a serious concern. In humid climates, perspiration stays on the skin. But in the Healthy in desert, perspiration evaporates from skin almost immediately, leaving a person with no indication of how much salt and a D e s e r t water have been lost. You may not even feel thirsty, but you Climate can't always rely on thirst as an indicator of fluid loss.

When outdoors, consume at least three to four quarts of fluid per day, preferably water. When engaging in physical activity, this fluid requirement increases to four to six quarts. Also, be aware that sodas, coffee, tea and alcohol can contribute to dehydration, so drink these beverages in moderation. If you become lightheaded, stop all activity and move to a cool or shaded area immediately. Should dehydration set in, soaking in a tub of tepid water and drinking plenty of fluids will replace electrolytes.

26 Skin Protection

There's nothing more beautiful than a bright sun shining high in a clear blue sky! When you're living in

Las Vegas, it may be easy to forget that you're also living in the desert, and the dangers of skin cancer are real. While some sun is actually good for you, providing much-needed vitamin D, being in the sun for prolonged periods of time increases the risk of skin damage. Here are some tips from the Nevada

Cancer Institute for staying safe in the sun:

Avoid the Sun

Minimize your sun exposure between the hours of 10am and 4pm, when the sun is highest in

the sky - seek shade whenever possible. Being at 1,600 to 2,700-foot elevation increases the

risk for skin cancer up to 13.5% from sea level.

Cover Yourself

Wear a wide-brimmed hat that protects your head, face, ears and neck. If you are wearing a

baseball cap, apply sun block to your ears and neck. When you are outside, always wear

sunglasses with 99 to 100% UV absorption. Wear sun-protective clothing like long-sleeved

shirts and pants.

Wear Sun Block

Be sure to seek shade and cover your skin first. You'll also want to wear a broad-spectrum

sun block instead of sunscreen, with an SPF of at least 30. One bottle of sun block should not

last all summer, and there is no such thing as all-day protection! You will need to reapply sun

block every 90 minutes and especially after swimming, towel dryings or perspiring, even if

the label says the product is waterproof.

Know the Risks

Nevada is ranked 7th in the nation for incidence of melanoma and 11th for skin cancer deaths.

Having dark skin does not protect you from developing skin cancer, and it is also extremely

important to avoid tanning beds, which give an unprotected direct dose of UV radiation. Get screened

Screening can help detect the early warning signs of skin cancer and may save your life.

Know your body and check for skin changes every month. See your doctor once per year and

watch for any changes in moles or lesions.

The Las Vegas Valley is also quickly becoming home to an ever-growing base of entrepreneurs and startups, with more than 10% of the workforce defined as being "entrepreneurial" in nature. Las Vegas streets and roadways have expanded to handle a large amount of traffic due to recent city growth and the development of great communities throughout our area.

Though some areas have their high-traffic times, much of the Las Vegas road system handles traffic efficiently and commuters can quickly get around. Here is a list of many of the roadways you will become familiar with when you move to the Las Vegas Valley:

LAS VEGAS PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

LAS VEGAS MONORAIL Company 3900 Paradise Road, Suite 260 Las Vegas, NV 89169 (702) 699-8200 www.lvmonorail.com

It began as a joint venture between the MGM Grand and Bally's Hotel. Why not create a one-mile transportation system between the hotels, encouraging visitors to both? It was an exciting, forward- thinking idea that took off in 1993 and soon included plans to expand to other locations along the Strip. In 1997, state legislature passed that enabled the private monorail company to own, operate, and charge a fare as a public monorail system. As expansion plans developed, the Monorail assembled a professional team that included Bombardier Transportation, Carter-Burgess, Gensler & Associates, Granite Construction Company, Liaise Corporation, Salomon Smith Barney and Transit Systems Management.

The original monorail system was acquired in 2000 by the nonprofit Las Vegas Monorail Company, which was formed to develop, own and operate the Las Vegas Monorail. Today, the Las Vegas Monorail remains the first and only privately owned public transportation system in the U.S. and includes seven stations along its four-mile route. Nearly 32,000 passengers ride the system daily to restaurants, shows, attractions and conventions within the Strip resort corridor.

The entire system consists of 51 routes served by 365 vehicles, carrying around 180,000 passengers each weekday in the greater Las Vegas Valley. Service enhancements are completed regularly and new transit guides are issued twice each year. 46 AIR TRANSPORTATION

Las Vegas' convention and entertainment industries, together with unparalleled outdoor recreation, have stimulated phenomenal growth in Southern Nevada. Today, nearly half of all Las Vegas visitors arrive by air, via McCarran International Airport, making it a major driving force in the Southern Nevada economy and one of the top 10 busiest airports in the world. Income derived from aviation activity generates significant economic benefits estimated at 25 billion dollars a year. In addition to these tangible benefits, McCarran is a valuable community asset that links Southern Nevada to the national air transportation system and brings the world to Las Vegas.

In a city that thrives on tourism, it's become increasingly important to provide travelers a positive first and last impression of Las Vegas by achieving that delicate balance between security and customer service. Whether busy meeting the needs of today's traveler, or preparing for tomorrow's, the Department of Aviation is proud of its ongoing efforts to achieve that objective by building and maintaining state-of-the-art facilities, maximizing existing resources, and capitalizing on new and innovative technology.

In calendar year 2005, McCarran International Airport handled more than 44.3 million passengers. This puts McCarran in the top 5 busiest airports in the United States.

The facilities at HND are tailored to the discriminating general aviation pilot and corporate client. As a primary reliever airport to busy McCarran, HND provides all the necessary services and amenities to make your trip pleasant and convenient.

The airfield has the capacity and runway length to meet the needs of virtually all general- aviation aircraft, saving precious time and money for those choosing HND. A beautifully appointed terminal building opened on June 13, 2006, providing a seamless transition between aircraft and ground transportation. A new stand-alone air traffic control tower and 95 new private aircraft storage hangars have also been placed into service.

Nevada consistently ranks high among the favored states in which to retire and, specifically, the Las Vegas Valley continues to attract active seniors. Among the reasons high on their lists include the region's ease of living, weather, access to great health care, educational facilities, low crime rate, plenty of park space and availability to enjoy arts and leisure. That's not all - there are economic reasons including job opportunities, housing prices and the absence of state 1 taxes. All combined, it's a compelling package for many adults 55 and over. • Thanks to a retiree population in Las Vegas of more than 300,000, the area is able to offer a wide array of activities, events, services and residential amenities that are specifically tailored to meet the needs of active adults as well as retirees. This is important as studies are finding that today's over 50 population are healthy and active individuals who may be interested in working, going to school and volunteering as well as enjoying free time - all of this and more is available in the Las Vegas region.

5 5 Why Las Vegas? Las Vegas is a city that constantly reinvents itself, much like what retirement can do for you! Starting this new chapter of life gives you the freedom to decide how you'll spend your time. The climate of our area provides many opportunities to enjoy your newfound freedom outside. Seniors with arthritis often find the dry warm weather a relief for aching joints. When the temperature warms up, retreat can be found in the audience of a show on the Strip or enjoying a ballroom dance lesson at the community center. A moderate sales tax and no state income tax allows for opportunity to take pleasure in such activities.

The health care industry is leading the way to diversify the Las Vegas economy. This means that newly constructed facilities, highly sought-after professionals, and state-of-the-art equipment are at your disposal. This year HCA, the parent company of 4 local hospitals — Sunrise Hospital, Mountain View Hospital, Southern Hills Hospital and Sunrise Children's Hospital — was named by The Ethisphere Institute as one of the world's 100 most ethical companies.

There are many reasons why Las Vegas is a great place to retire and to be an active senior!

Retirement Living Due to the wide array of choice available to Las Vegas seniors, retirement communities are very competitive, which is a plus for consumers because they can shop around to ensure the right facility matches their lifestyle.

When visiting and interviewing at retirement communities, shop around and make several visits at different times. It's important that a community under consideration be close to your services, such as doctor's offices, hospitals, grocery stores and favorite shopping places. Identify what amenities are important to you, such as an onsite beauty shop, golf course membership, transportation for doctor appointments, shopping, cultural events, church and social outings. Review the community's activity calendar to see what it offers and ask the marketing director or the activity director about programs. Don't hesitate to ask the residents how long they have lived in the community and whether they like it.

Typical assisted living services include recreational, social and educational activities; transportation, emergency help, housekeeping, meals, assistance with daily living and personal assistance.

Assisted Living Facilities These housing options combine a level of independent living with some assistance for personal care. They provide care to residents who cannot live alone, but do not need 24-hour nursing care. Assisted living communities offer residents the privacy of their own bedroom, often with a small kitchen. Most offer meals in a community dining room, snacks, laundry services, housekeeping and assistance with personal needs such as bathing, dressing or medication supervision. These facilities are not designed for people who need serious medical care, but there are some facilities for people with Alzheimer's, dementia and memory loss.

Residential Care Homes (Personal Care Homes) These group living facilities, usually single-family homes, are designed to meet the needs of people who cannot live independently, but do not need nursing homes. These homes provide some type of assistance with daily living activities including eating, walking and bathing. Some homes provide skilled nursing, rehabilitative services or specialized care for illnesses such as Alzheimer's.

6 5 Skilled Nursing Facilities A skilled nursing facility is staffed by registered nurses who help provide 24-hour care to those who can no longer care for themselves due to physical, emotional or mental conditions. A licensed physician supervises each patient's care and a nurse or other medical professional is almost always on the premises.

Las Vegas is a vibrant, pulsating city and is arguably the largest adult playground in the world. Over 30 million people visit Las Vegas each year! Most end up on the Strip, where they stay in some of the largest, most glamorous and unique hotels in the world. While here, they play in the massive casinos, each of which contains thousands of slot machines and hundreds of gaming tables. They also enjoy lavish pools, spa treatments, retail therapy and dine at 5-star restaurants and expansive buffets. There's something for everyone here in Las Vegas, including us residents!

On any given evening in Las Vegas, there are hundreds of events to attend, such as the renowned stage shows, world-class sporting events, performances by famous entertainers - plus, music, dance and comedy acts at venues throughout the city. The frivolity continues long into the night, as newcomers, seasoned hands and everyone in between pursue thrills and riches well into the wee hours of the morning.

At night, the Vegas Strip comes alive with millions of dancing lights and thousands of revelers. A drive down Las Vegas Boulevard takes you past the Luxor pyramid with its iconic spotlight, New York New York's replica skyline, the spectacular dancing waters of Bellagio's fountains, the Eiffel Tower of Paris Las Vegas, Circus Circus's big top and the lofty Stratosphere tower. Just driving down the Strip is an extraordinary experience unto itself!

Eventually, you'll find yourself downtown, home to historic old gambling parlors like Binion's and the Golden Nugget. The Fremont Street Experience, a canopied area where casinos have been connected to the street, is also here. With more than 2 million lights and a state-of-the-art sound system, Fremont Street brings nightly shows through the world's largest audio-video system.

Since 2005, the Strip has been undergoing a transformation. Huge high rises have been built to cater to high demand for housing on The Strip and Downtown. Most recently, MGM has built a massive project called City Center, and The Cosmopolitan - Las Vegas's newest luxury resort casino, hotel and condo - just opened for business. And, a number of established casino-hotels have undergone major renovations to keep up with the newer developments. Even with the economic downturn, ambitious projects are in the works. As we move into the future, the Las Vegas skyline continues to change and becomes even more impressive! CASINO-HOTELS ON THE STRIP

Eastside Cannery Good food in large quantities has always been a part of the Las Vegas experience. Vegas is famous for its all- you-can-eat buffets, which can be found at nearly every casino. Below you'll find some tips so that your buffet experience is scrumptious, followed by a current listing of buffets in the Las Vegas area.

The most famous buffets in town are at the Rio, Bellagio, Planet Hollywood, Bally's and the Wynn. Above- average buffets typically run about $30 a person for a weekend dinner — be sure to check ahead if a dress code exits. Lunch is often the best value at many buffets, when they are around half price; breakfasts are cheapest and often have a great spread too. A number of buffets also offer champagne brunches on weekends. Discounts on buffet prices are sometimes available if you sign up for a free membership, and almost all offer a discount for kids. Coupons can also be found in local publications and online.

Lines can be long — arriving early/later can reduce the wait, especially for brunch. You can also try to get a comp to skip the line if you gamble enough or are a valued hotel guest; some of the more upscale buffets also take reservations. Don't forget that tipping your buffet waiter 10-15% is customary! You can leave cash on the table at the end of your meal or tip the cashier at the counter on a credit card.

Bali Hai Golf Club Golf might not be the first thing that comes to mind when someone says Sin City, but Las Vegas has definitely joined the inner circle of preeminent desert golf destinations. Golfing in Las Vegas is one of the most unique golfing experiences you can have! Surrounded by mountains and beautiful desert scenery, contrasted by the lush greenery of the course, each offers its own unique view of Vegas. With more than 55 golf courses in the area, Las Vegas offers players of all abilities an unforgettable experience.

The best, most lavish courses have some of the biggest names in the game behind them. You'll have the chance to play original course designs by great players and renowned architects, such as Jack Nicklaus, Raymond Floyd, Greg Nash, Bob Cupp, Arthur Hills, Tom Fazio and Arnold Palmer.

When booking a tee time, Friday through Sunday are the busiest, so look mid- week for more availability and better deals. For seasonal bargains, winter (65 degree days and sunshine) and summer in Vegas are ideal. Just remember, morning and evening tee times in summer fill up early so book in advance! Below is a selection of courses in the Las Vegas area, with details like course type and price range. The private courses within gated communities listed have membership options available to non-residents. Fore! GOLF COURSE WHERE TYPE/DESIGNER DIFFICULTY PRICE
