User Manual: Change the Language of Your Surface 3 from Spanish to English User manual: Change the language of your Surface 3 from Spanish to English Hello and welcome, Congratulations with your purchase of a brand new Microsoft Surface 3 at iBOOD. One thing: it starts up in Spanish and that can be a bit of a drag, unless you speak Spanish of course. We however assume that most of our customers speak English and therefore we compiled this guide with which you can change its language from Spanish to English. Or any other language you want. We want you to get up and running quickly so where possible we will be skipping steps. Have fun with your brand new Surface 3. Kind Regards, Team iBOOD WHAT YOU’LL NEED - Your Microsoft Surface 3 tablet of course - A working Internet connection and administrator password (the one at your house for example, it’s not recommended to do this setup when being connected to a public network due to online security.) 1 © iBOOD, 2016. User manual: Change the language of your Surface 3 from Spanish to English We Start of course by turning the device on by pressing the Power button. Once powered up you’ll be presented with a Spanish start up menu which we will walk through step by step. First you’ll see the screen below: Choose your network here, enter your password and press ‘Siguente.’ Your Surface 3 will now make a connection to the Internet. If this fails: press ‘Artras’ and repeat the previous steps. Once the Surface 3 has made a connection to the Internet, you will see the screen below. Here we will set up your Surface 3. You can choose from the recommended settings and the personal settings, we choose the option personal by clicking ‘Personalizar configuracion’. You will then see the following screen. 2 © iBOOD, 2016. User manual: Change the language of your Surface 3 from Spanish to English This is where you can activate your contacts and calendar, decide whether you want to send your data to Microsoft and if you Surface 3 can make contacts with other apps. For the sake of a quick set up we skip this step. You can always change these settings once the language has been set correctly. Press ‘Siguente’, you will see the following: From the four presented options we turn off the first and last ones (thus the first and fourth). These refer to making connections with public hotspots and sending out diagnostic information. This is what we prefer, but you can of course – for whatever reason – choose to leave them on. Press ‘Siguente’. And you will be presented the following: 3 © iBOOD, 2016. User manual: Change the language of your Surface 3 from Spanish to English On the above screen several protection options are presented to you, we leave these all on and click ‘Siguente’ again. After that the message ‘Uno Momento’ pops up. This will last a few minutes so be patient… After that you will see the following screen: Here you can specify if you’re using a home or company network. Make your choice (in this example we choose the home variant ‘Es Mío’) and click ‘Siguente’. The following screen pops up: 4 © iBOOD, 2016. User manual: Change the language of your Surface 3 from Spanish to English Here you have the option to connect a Microsoft account to your Surface 3. If you don’t have one you can create one online on Microsoft’s website or at Outlook.com. We skip this step for the sake of speed by clicking ‘Om tir este paso’. You can always add an account later. You will see the following. In the top field you can fill in a name (for your device, like ‘My Surface 3’) and under ‘Dale seguridad’ set a password. We leave these empty for now. Once again: you can set this later. Click ‘Siguente’. Your Surface 3 will now apply the settings, this can take some time so be patient. Once this is done the Windows 10 Desktop will appear (see picture below), This is still in Spanish but we’re going to change that now. 5 © iBOOD, 2016. User manual: Change the language of your Surface 3 from Spanish to English Press the Start button (bottom left all the way in the corner), choose Configuración, A screen pops up, choose ‘Hore e Idioma’. (See next page) 6 © iBOOD, 2016. User manual: Change the language of your Surface 3 from Spanish to English After that you select ‘Region en Idioma’ which you can find on the left. Then select your language from the drop down in the top. For English choose: Reino Unido For German choose: Alemania For Dutch choose: Países Bajos Once you have chosen your language, you move on to the second option on the screen entitled: ‘Agregar Un Idioma’, with this you set up the display language of your Surface 3. Press the ‘+’ sign and choose your language. Please note: all languages are displayed bi-lingually thus in both Spanish and the original, for German for example it states ‘Alemania’ and ‘Deutsch’. Note that the languages are not alphabetically ordered. See an example on the next page. 7 © iBOOD, 2016. User manual: Change the language of your Surface 3 from Spanish to English As you can see above we have chosen for English in this example. Spanish can be removed here if you want. In the block which states English – or perhaps in your case a different language – you click ‘Esteblacer Como Predeterminado’. After that you click ‘Opciones’ and then ‘Descargar Paqueta de Idioma’. The language pack will now be downloaded and installed. This can take a few minutes so be patient. See an example of the download screen on the next page. 8 © iBOOD, 2016. User manual: Change the language of your Surface 3 from Spanish to English Once the installation is finished, close the window and restart your Surface 3. You do this by clicking the Start button and then: ‘Inicio/Apagado’, A sub menu appears, choose ‘Reiniciar.’ Your Surface 3 will restart now. (See example on next page.) 9 © iBOOD, 2016. User manual: Change the language of your Surface 3 from Spanish to English A large part of the system has now been set in the language of your choice. But not everything, the greeting screen when you start it up among it. We will change that now in the control panel. Go to the start button and right click it. Then choose ‘control panel’. A new window opens, choose the option ‘Language’. (See next page) 10 © iBOOD, 2016. User manual: Change the language of your Surface 3 from Spanish to English At the bottom left we click ‘Locations’. See the picture below. After that a new window opens, click the tab ‘Administrative’. Then click the button ‘Copy Settings’. (See next page) 11 © iBOOD, 2016. User manual: Change the language of your Surface 3 from Spanish to English Next up a new window opens. At the bottom of this window you will see two check boxes that need to be checked namely: ‘Welcome Screen and System Accounts’ and ‘New User Accounts’. Once that is done click ‘OK’. A dialogue will appear that states that your Surface 3 has to be restarted in order for the changes to take effect. Click the button ‘restart now.’ (See next page.) 12 © iBOOD, 2016. User manual: Change the language of your Surface 3 from Spanish to English Once restarted, this process is finished. Except for a few things that is …. A few headers in the Start Menu will still be displayed in Spanish but fear not! You can open these with a simple click and then change their name. Your Surface 3 has now been set to the language of your choice. Have fun! 13 © iBOOD, 2016. .

All recommendations should be carried out on test devices before being applied to production devices. Physical security UEFI settings What is UEFI? The UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) is very much like the traditional BIOS (Basic Input Output System) used for early personal computers. These control basic settings for the system such as hard disk settings, peripheral port settings, boot order of devices and power on passwords. The Microsoft Surface tablet range uses UEFI to control boot options and peripheral settings similar to what you would expect on a standard PC. The UEFI settings and options varies depending on the Surface model, the newer pro models allow more control of the tablet settings. Why are these settings important? As will be shown within this paper, if these settings are insecurely configured it can result in the tablet device becoming compromised, potentially bypassing the Windows password completely.

What to do if . I can’t connect to any Wi-Fi network. Do a full restart, by clicking the Power icon and selecting Restart. This initiates a full reboot. (This is different than pressing the power button.) If that doesn’t work, go to All Settings (swipe from the right to select it), Network and Internet, Manage Wi-Fi Settings, and Manage Known Networks. Remove the WAstudent network (or your home network), then add it back again. The password for the WAstudent network is Warriors2! Including the exclamation point. My pen stopped working. I can’t write with it, even though the button on the end still works. Remove and replace the battery: twist the top counterclockwise about 1/16th of a turn until it clicks, then carefully pull the top off the body of the pen, just far enough for the battery to separate, then reinsert the top into the pen body, being careful to line up the silver metal ridge on the pen top with the slot on the pen body. If that doesn’t work, replace the battery. It’s asking for an Administrator username and password. The username is warrior and the password is Courage! but you must first enter the full computer name in front of the warrior username. For example, S3studentname\warrior. Your computer name can be found by right clicking the This PC icon in File Explorer and selecting Properties. Note that the standard is S3firtnamelastname, but only the first 15 characters count. For example, to enter the local admin password for George Washington’s Surface 3 you would type s3georgewashing\warrior as the username.
