  • Sporting Legends: John Lowe
SPORTING LEGENDS: JOHN LOWE SPORT: DARTS COMPETITIVE ERA: 1978 - 2008 John Lowe (born 21 July 1945 in New Tupton, Derbyshire) is an English darts player who was one of the main competitors who made darts such a huge spectator sport in the 1970s and 1980s, particularly in the United Kingdom. Lowe won the World Championship title in three different decades - 1979, 1987 and 1993. He was regarded as the gentleman of the game, but he was very much a bridesmaid figure behind Eric Bristow in the early days of darts' rise to prominence - in terms of results and charisma. He met Bristow six times in the World Championship in various semi-finals and finals and it wasn't until his fourth attempt (in the 1987 final) that he managed to overcome his great rival. His record against Bristow in majors was three wins and six defeats. Lowe achieved the ultimate feat in darts on 13 October 1984 during the World Matchplay tournament against Keith Deller when he managed a nine dart finish - the sport's equivalent of a hole-in-one in golf or a 147 break in snooker. This was the first time this had ever been accomplished by any darts player while being televised. For this, Lowe won £102,000. He went on to clinch the tournament. As well as his three world titles, Lowe also won two World Masters titles, two British Open titles and two British Matchplay championships, two World Cup Singles and three European Cup Singles Titles, as well as countless other titles around the world in a hugely successful career.

1 DR. DARTS’ NEWSLETTER Issue 91 October 2017 STILL AT THE CUTTING EDGE: THE BLADE DARTBOARD CELEBRATES 20th ANNIVERSARY It always a pleasure to help raise the profile of the WINMAU Dartboard Co. Ltd., who have sponsored my research for a decade. What better opportunity than to congratulate WINMAU on the 20th anniversary of the production of the BLADE dartboard. (The image below, left, shows the original BLADE packaging.) Like most things in the modern era, technical innovation has been the driving force behind the incredible pace at which darts equipment has evolved. Wood and feather gave way to tungsten and more advanced flight and shaft materials, and elm was eventually replaced by sisal (aka ‘bristle’). Such innovations in the darts we throw and the board we aim at has seen players of unparalleled ability hitting ever higher averages. WINMAU (formerly Kick Bros.) celebrated its 70th anniversary last year and so it is no surprise that the company has played an extremely important role in the darting success story since the 1940s. Nothing illustrates this more clearly than the Blade dartboard. Since 1997, each iteration of the Blade dartboard has been recognised as the finest and most durable in the world – a fact acknowledged by the British Darts Organisation (BDO), which not only endorses Blade dartboards, but has been using them in all its competitions since the original Blade was launched two decades ago. WINMAU’s Sales and Marketing Director, Ian Flack told DDN, “Each evolution of the Blade dartboard builds on the innovations that have gone before it. Every time we sit down and say to ourselves ‘The current Blade is great, but what can we do to make it even better.” 20 years ago, that approach resulted in innovations that we all, as darts players, now take for granted such as the introduction of angled (or bladed) wire that minimised bounce-outs, and a completely staple-free web (aka ‘spider’ in the USA).

It seems if you are a dart player you are given a nickname even if this is just a shortened version of your name for example Raymond van Barneveld’s nickname is ‘Barney’ or extended to 'Barney Rubble' from the Flintstones. Raymond sometimes wears a gold Barney Rubble medallion around his neck for good luck! Some nicknames are also based on a professional trade, such as ‘Sparky’, a name given to an electrician and also a nickname used by Wesley Harms and Ricco Vonck. While others can have more of a meaning based upon events such as ‘Jackpot’ used by the two time World Darts Champions, Adrian Lewis. So how did he get his nickname? While competing in the Las Vegas Desert Classic in 2005, Adrian had a go on the slot machines.

  • Raymond Van Barneveld
SPORTING LEGENDS: RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD SPORT: DARTS COMPETITIVE ERA: 1990 - PRESENT Raymond van Barneveld (born 20 April 1967 in The Hague, Netherlands), nickname Barney and The Man, is a professional darts player. He is a five time World Darts Champion, two time UK Open Champion and the Las Vegas Desert Classic Champion. From January to June 2008, he was the PDC world number one ranked player. His victory in the 2007 final, added to his four previous BDO Championships brought him level with Eric Bristow as a five-time world champion. He is the most successful Dutch darts player ever, and has a significant effect in putting the game of darts on the map in the Netherlands. Barneveld's first World Championship appearance came in 1991 playing in the Embassy World Championship at the Lakeside Country Club, but his first round match ended in a 0-3 defeat to Australian Keith Sullivan. He started to make some progress on the British Darts Organisation circuit, reaching the quarter-finals of the Belgian Open in September 1990 and the German Open in March 1991. His first semi-final came at the Swiss Open in June 1991. He failed to qualify in 1992, but made it back to Lakeside in 1993, which would be the last time that a unified World Championship would be staged. Barneveld lost in a close match 2-3 to John Lowe, who would go on to win the championship. SPORTING LEGENDS: RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD Barneveld’s 2007 World Title success over Phil Taylor was a sweet victory! Shortly after the 1993 World Final, the top players in the game at the time formed the World Darts Council (WDC, now the PDC) and left the BDO.
