Visiting Team. "LONDON LINES" MENS LADIES My prediction, at the onset of the season, that this year's Premier League would be the toughest yet, seems to be proving DAVE BACKHOUSE LIZ BARNES correct, and they do not come any tougher than our opponents this BARRY BALABAN C. BLACKBURN weekend, Yorkshire. MICK BASTOW MARIA BOWERS RAY BATTYE LYNNE BUCKINGHAM Remarkably, our two counties have won no less than seven MARK BEAUMONT SHEILA COURT of the ten Premier Division Championships to date, and if you look BRIAN BIRD EVE DAVISON at the current positions, only a fool (or a Lancastrian perhaps!), TONY BOWERS - CAPT. CHERYL DERWENT would bet against either of us making it eight from eleven. IAN BRANDON TERESA DOLAN BILL BUTLER CHRIS DOWNING Yorkshire enjoyed tremendous all round success in their last DAVE CROSSLAND SANDY EARNSHAW match against Cambridge, whilst we had an indifferent time of things PADDY DOCKERTY DEBBIE GREEN in the West Midlands. However, my old adversary John Bostockwill KEITH GIBSON GERALDINE HUDSON RUSS GOODWIN LYNNETTE HUGHES know that 'that means nowt', and that this match will be as keenly DENIS HICKLING ROZ HULL contested as all previous encounters. STEVE HUDSON KAREN LAWMAN It remains for me to extend the warmest of welcomes to the TONY HULL TAMMY MONTGOMERY ALAN JOHNSON LYNDA MOORHOUSE entire Yorkshire party, with a wish that their weekend with us, if not ROGER LAMB PAT MORTIMER entirely successful, is an enjoyable one. Thefirsttry-out, in the Midlands, DEREK McBRIDE BEV RILEY was a bit disjointed so please make sure you have got your copy, JOHN MOORING JOYCE SHEARD and lets ALL hear those London voices. - well done Barnseyl! DENNIS PRIESTLEY SYLVIA SMART ALAN SMITH CHRIS TEMPLE Finally, some of you may not be aware of the tragic and STEVE STEELE JEAN THOMAS sudden passing of one of darts true stalwarts. • Sporting Legends: John Lowe
SPORTING LEGENDS: JOHN LOWE SPORT: DARTS COMPETITIVE ERA: 1978 - 2008 John Lowe (born 21 July 1945 in New Tupton, Derbyshire) is an English darts player who was one of the main competitors who made darts such a huge spectator sport in the 1970s and 1980s, particularly in the United Kingdom. Lowe won the World Championship title in three different decades - 1979, 1987 and 1993. He was regarded as the gentleman of the game, but he was very much a bridesmaid figure behind Eric Bristow in the early days of darts' rise to prominence - in terms of results and charisma. He met Bristow six times in the World Championship in various semi-finals and finals and it wasn't until his fourth attempt (in the 1987 final) that he managed to overcome his great rival. His record against Bristow in majors was three wins and six defeats. Lowe achieved the ultimate feat in darts on 13 October 1984 during the World Matchplay tournament against Keith Deller when he managed a nine dart finish - the sport's equivalent of a hole-in-one in golf or a 147 break in snooker. This was the first time this had ever been accomplished by any darts player while being televised. For this, Lowe won £102,000. He went on to clinch the tournament. As well as his three world titles, Lowe also won two World Masters titles, two British Open titles and two British Matchplay championships, two World Cup Singles and three European Cup Singles Titles, as well as countless other titles around the world in a hugely successful career.

It seems if you are a dart player you are given a nickname even if this is just a shortened version of your name for example Raymond van Barneveld’s nickname is ‘Barney’ or extended to 'Barney Rubble' from the Flintstones. Raymond sometimes wears a gold Barney Rubble medallion around his neck for good luck! Some nicknames are also based on a professional trade, such as ‘Sparky’, a name given to an electrician and also a nickname used by Wesley Harms and Ricco Vonck. While others can have more of a meaning based upon events such as ‘Jackpot’ used by the two time World Darts Champions, Adrian Lewis. So how did he get his nickname? While competing in the Las Vegas Desert Classic in 2005, Adrian had a go on the slot machines.
