Established in 2004, the UWA Fogarty Foundation Scholarship Program is one of Australia’s premier scholarship programs. The scholarship is a joint initiative between the Fogarty Foundation and The University of Western Australia, to award WA’s brightest and most committed students, scholarships for the entirety of their university degree. The program connects Scholars with local and international leaders, to provide Scholars and Alumni leadership opportunities, supported through comprehensive academic scholarships, academic mentoring, career and personal enrichment engagements and, paramount to the program, a strong network of likeminded young leaders. Ten new scholarships are awarded each year to our State’s highest achieving students. Scholars are selected based on academic excellence and outstanding achievements in leadership, community involvement, sports, the arts and enterprising initiatives. UWA Fogarty Undergraduate Scholars who choose to continue their postgraduate study at UWA are fully supported in their further studies. A key element of the scholarships is a tailored Leadership and Enterprise Program for the Scholars’ entire university degree. This program focuses on developing transformative leadership skills in each of the Scholars and includes support for Scholars’ initiatives, and access to the Scholars’ Enterprise Investment Program. In 2021, we have 60 Scholars and 106 Alumni who are studying, working and making a contribution in WA and around the world. The UWA Fogarty Foundation Leadership and Enterprise Program The Fogarty Foundation and The University of Western Australia view leadership as an integral factor in building strong communities. UWA Fogarty Scholars participate in a tailored Leadership and Enterprise Program that provides Scholars and Alumni with an excellent opportunity to learn from today’s leaders. The Leadership and Enterprise Program expands Scholars’ horizons by initiating opportunities for the Scholars to learn from, and have access to, a network of leaders, gain insight into how our community works and how they can make a positive contribution now and in the future. From 2020, the Leadership and Enterprise Program includes a focus on enterprise, bringing Scholars a range of opportunities to challenge their thinking and to develop leadership, entrepreneurial and life skills. The UWA Fogarty Scholars study across a range of disciplines and as they graduate they become members of the UWA Fogarty Scholars’ Alumni. The Alumni network of talented and motivated young people working in a variety of professions, provides ongoing support as they evolve in their individual roles within the community.     AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT – AN OVERVIEW OF AN UNUSUAL SPECIAL EDITION OF THE UWA LAW REVIEW AND AN UNUSUAL CONFERENCE CAMILLA ANDERSEN* Just over a year ago, as part of the celebrations for the UWA Law School’s 90th Anniversary, a unique event was held here at UWA, signalling a change in the legal profession towards a willingness to innovate contracts. On the 7th and 8th Dec 2017 we hosted the Comic & Creative Contracts conference,1 showcasing many of the newest developments in contract design and innovation. We heard from the people at the forefront of innovation in rethinking what contracts look like, feel like and how we interact with them. At that time, we had a handful of projects to showcase, including the completed employment contracts which the UWA Law School team had worked on for Aurecon,2. We also heard from Robert de Roys thriving comic contract practice in South Africa, 3 and we learned about contract design innovation in Scandinavia, as well as mind mapping and innovations in valued based (conscious) contracting, changing the foundations of modern contracting. Since then, the movement for changes in contracting has prompted even more traction in this growing field, and new projects and ideas have emerged. We have collected enough material to share a special edition of the UWA Journal, but as the title of this introduction suggests, get ready for something completely different. This edition of the Law Journal holds illustrations, cartoons, and interview transcripts. Innovators think outside the box, not just in what they do but how they present it.

Longer term and more global themes are also pertinent, such as the role of NFPs in our democracy, the extent to which regulation should move beyond charities to the broader NFP sector and the role and regulation of NFPs in international relations and cross border service delivery. To investigate these themes, the NFPs University of Western Australia (UWA) Research Group presented a summit in November 2018, bringing together key stakeholders from academia, regulators and the NFP sector. At this event, the inaugural Charity Law Association of Australia and New Zealand annual keynote lecture was delivered by UWA Chancellor, Hon Robert French AC.

    Review Essay On Property in Equity Legal and Equitable Property Rights by John Tarrant (2019), Federation Press, 176 pp, ISBN 9781760022044 Stephen Puttick Abstract This essay reviews Legal and Equitable Property Rights by Professor John Tarrant. Through a focus on the meaning and content of ‘equitable property’, it is argued that the central thesis of Tarrant’s book provides a valuable, alternative conception of equitable rights to that postulated by many leading scholars. However, while Tarrant’s thesis is supported by authority and does much to challenge prevailing academic perspectives, it also has several limitations. I Introduction What is ‘property’? What is ‘equitable property’? Is ‘equitable property’ really ‘property’? The answers to these questions, still unsettled, have been elaborated over many thousands of pages and demand inquiries of a fundamental kind about, for example, the legal significance of ‘ownership’ and ‘possession’;1 and the relationship to the law of obligations,2 remedies,3 and the wider superstructure of private law.4 ADVANCE In Legal and Equitable Property Rights, Professor John Tarrant seeks to address such questions through the development of a comprehensive theory of legal and equitable property.
