    AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT – AN OVERVIEW OF AN UNUSUAL SPECIAL EDITION OF THE UWA LAW REVIEW AND AN UNUSUAL CONFERENCE CAMILLA ANDERSEN* Just over a year ago, as part of the celebrations for the UWA Law School’s 90th Anniversary, a unique event was held here at UWA, signalling a change in the legal profession towards a willingness to innovate contracts. On the 7th and 8th Dec 2017 we hosted the Comic & Creative Contracts conference,1 showcasing many of the newest developments in contract design and innovation. We heard from the people at the forefront of innovation in rethinking what contracts look like, feel like and how we interact with them. At that time, we had a handful of projects to showcase, including the completed employment contracts which the UWA Law School team had worked on for Aurecon,2. We also heard from Robert de Roys thriving comic contract practice in South Africa, 3 and we learned about contract design innovation in Scandinavia, as well as mind mapping and innovations in valued based (conscious) contracting, changing the foundations of modern contracting. Since then, the movement for changes in contracting has prompted even more traction in this growing field, and new projects and ideas have emerged. We have collected enough material to share a special edition of the UWA Journal, but as the title of this introduction suggests, get ready for something completely different. This edition of the Law Journal holds illustrations, cartoons, and interview transcripts. Innovators think outside the box, not just in what they do but how they present it.

Longer term and more global themes are also pertinent, such as the role of NFPs in our democracy, the extent to which regulation should move beyond charities to the broader NFP sector and the role and regulation of NFPs in international relations and cross border service delivery. To investigate these themes, the NFPs University of Western Australia (UWA) Research Group presented a summit in November 2018, bringing together key stakeholders from academia, regulators and the NFP sector.     Review Essay On Property in Equity Legal and Equitable Property Rights by John Tarrant (2019), Federation Press, 176 pp, ISBN 9781760022044 Stephen Puttick Abstract This essay reviews Legal and Equitable Property Rights by Professor John Tarrant. Through a focus on the meaning and content of ‘equitable property’, it is argued that the central thesis of Tarrant’s book provides a valuable, alternative conception of equitable rights to that postulated by many leading scholars. However, while Tarrant’s thesis is supported by authority and does much to challenge prevailing academic perspectives, it also has several limitations. I Introduction What is ‘property’? What is ‘equitable property’? Is ‘equitable property’ really ‘property’? The answers to these questions, still unsettled, have been elaborated over many thousands of pages and demand inquiries of a fundamental kind about, for example, the legal significance of ‘ownership’ and ‘possession’;1 and the relationship to the law of obligations,2 remedies,3 and the wider superstructure of private law.4 ADVANCE In Legal and Equitable Property Rights, Professor John Tarrant seeks to address such questions through the development of a comprehensive theory of legal and equitable property. Established in 2004, the UWA Fogarty Foundation Scholarship Program is one of Australia’s premier scholarship programs. The scholarship is a joint initiative between the Fogarty Foundation and The University of Western Australia, to award WA’s brightest and most committed students, scholarships for the entirety of their university degree. The program connects Scholars with local and international leaders, to provide Scholars and Alumni leadership opportunities, supported through comprehensive academic scholarships, academic mentoring, career and personal enrichment engagements and, paramount to the program, a strong network of likeminded young leaders.
