Tras graduarse en la Universidad de San Diego no encontraba trabajo, y cuando le comentaron que un hogar de acogida de jóvenes problemáticos estaba contratando monitores en prácticas, no dudó en aceptar el empleo. El director explica cómo sufrió el primer día: “Tenía mucho miedo de hacer algo mal y de que eso empeorase el estado de los chicos. Después de un mes, me enamoré del trabajo”. Estuvo trabajando en ese hogar de acogida más de dos años. Esta experiencia cambió la vida del director, y para su proyecto de final de Máster en Cine, cursado en la Universidad Estatal de San Diego, realizó un cortometraje de 20 minutos basado en sus experiencias en el hogar de acogida.
