Dear Members of IID Association,

In this report, I cover the period of the financial year 2018-2019 and include a few matters that go up to the time of reporting. By God’s grace, we have seen good developments during this period, and we had to take difficult decisions, too.

VOCATIONAL SCHOOLS

The fitters’ training in our ITI in Pallavaram was well attended and enrolment was good. We had 8 students that were referred to us from the Department of Employment and Training and who received a Government stipend. However, the carpentry and the welding training was not so well attended. Even though, through the help of our R&D Director, J.P. Osborne, there was a significant improvement in quality of training and the number of orders increased to supplement income to cover expenses.

The tailoring school headed by Magdalene trained mostly women of the neighborhood and has staff that not only train them, but also work on products that sell well and contribute to the sustainability of the center.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Our vision of skills training to the poor uses the system of Community Colleges system to fulfill its goal of transformational impact on young people. There were 7 Community Colleges during this financial year: 6 in and one in Maharashtra. Due to very low income from student fees and the decision to sell or develop our property in Vijayawada, we had to discontinue with the community college there. Hopefully, if we get a good Joint Venture project, we could revive it within our own new buildings. Similarly, we have decided to wind up the Community College in Thirunindravur in August this year. After 3 years of running it, the turnout of students has not increased due to a variety of reasons not under our control.

In April I went to the National Skills Development Corporation (NSDC) in Delhi and started the process of affiliation with this large Government organization. Our Principal is working on fulfilling the many conditions that go with it. Once approved, it will be the beginning of many changes that will follow, including the vision of sustainability.

We moved the 2 Community Colleges of Pune from Lullanagar and Chakan into one single unit at Hadapsar. A new leader, Mr. Gordon Fernandez, took charge and we hope that the new center will pick up well.

As part of our Community College franchise activities, we enable like-minded organizations to start Community Colleges in various parts of the country. There are 7 franchises that are active, but the number of enrolled institutions keeps changing as there are those who become independent and others join. Even requests from Sri Lanka have reached us with the request of franchise affiliation.

CHILD CARE

We still maintain our children’s home in Nellore under the care of Kallu Sekhar and his wife Mary and are presently supporting 26 children. Alumni members and neighbors from the surroundings contributed many things and money to help supporting the children. This home is partly being supported from Links International, UK. Unfortunately the Andhra Pradesh Government, like most states of India, is demanding more and more facilities and insists on standards that cannot be met with our available finance. We are considering moving into community based child care instead of home-based institutional care.

One of the long-standing programs of IIDA is our Day Care Centre at Thideernagar Slum, Besant Nagar. With 45 children under the age of 5 years being taken care of, this center also receives some financial help from Links International, but its major support is from the IID’s general funds. Over the years hundreds of children have gone through this pre-school care center, and many lives have been empowered and changed.

PROPERTIES

The Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with a builder in Nellore for the 1 ½ acre land in Nellore has borne fruit and the project is going on as planned, giving us the much-needed support still required to bridge the gap between rising expenses and our income from student fees, foreign donations and other sources.

Finally, after months of tough negotiations with Ceebros Developers, the JDA for our Thoraipakkam land was signed in October 2018. The expected “go forward”, however, did not happen yet, and several roadblocks have still to be overcome. We are consulting a number of experts to help us taking the required steps.

COMPLIANCES

A number of required compliances with Govt norms that came to our notice have been fulfilled or are being pursued by our departments of accounts, training, R&D and administration. We were fortunate that through the income from the Nellore JDA we were able to cover the high expenses.

ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGES

“The only Constant is Change”. We had the help of John Osborne and Graham Osborne, two senior chartered accountants and businessmen for developing nations to look into our accounting and reporting system. They came up with a number of very useful suggestions that will help us to do the needed changes and to steer the IIDA ship into the right direction, even as we are facing much headwind.

BOARD AND COMMITTEES

The Board of IIDA meets regularly once ever quarter. This January we had a Board retreat for 2 days in the Guest Center on top of St. Thomas Mount. We had such retreats several times before as they are essential for good governance. Vision focus, finance, succession and spiritual guidance were subjects that were discussed. IIDA has a number of committees such as Board Subcommittees on Finance, Admin and Education, Coordinating Committee, Senior Management Team, Care Committee, Community College Leaders, Advisory committees in remote places like Pune, Chettupattu and Nellore and a weekly Head Office Planning Committee.

SUSTAINABILITY AND OUTLOOK

Some of our centers are nearing sustainability. Our aim is, as before, to attain sustainability of all centers through Indian income. We are still working at schemes like joining NSDC, increasing the No of students, using media for fundraising, income generation in centers that have such scope, CSR and Govt funding. This, with maintaining the vision focus and doing structural changes, will enable us to march forward and see greater things than ever before.

IMPROVEMENTS IN INFRASTRUCTURE:

I am happy to record the fact that we were able to install 2 new 2Ton Air conditioners in Head Office thus making the Head Office a fully Air-conditioned Office. CCTV cameras have also been installed in Head Office premises as a safety measure.

KEY ACHIEVEMENT OF THE YEAR

After prolonged discussions and consultations with Corporation Officials, we were able to pay Professional Tax for our staff in Head Office, CC Head Office, Aminjikarai CC, GTC and Perambur CC for the year 2018-19. Similarly, we have paid Professional tax for the staff in ITI, Pallavaram Hostel, Pallavaram CC and Mahabalipuram CC at their respective Municipal/Panchayat offices. This is a significant step in compliance.

MAINTENANCE

Head Office maintains the Head Office Building as well as the nearby GTC Building and offers maintenance support to other Centres through our maintenance staff. As the water flow from our Bore well in Head office got reduced significantly, the existing Bore well was deepened by another 25 feet and the water output has improved much after this work. However, as a long term solution, it has been planned to apply for Metro water connection to our Head Office. As the Bore well in GTC was also giving much problem, the Borewell was cleaned off debris and the water output has improved after this effort.

ACCOUNTS

Accounts Department was able to perform all its functions effectively during this reporting year. Our renowned Auditor Mr. M.Kandasami and his team helped us in finalizing our Accounts for the reporting year by regular auditing and corrections wherever necessary. Replies to the queries raised by IT department were furnished to their satisfaction. I would like to take this opportunity to appreciate and thank all our Accounts staff for finalizing the 2018-19 Accounts in time.

CONCLUSION

At Head Office, we have always focused on reducing the expenditure, wherever possible, as this would help in improving our finances. Our Head Office is functioning with strength of 11 staff (including Accounts staff) and has always risen to the occasion in every situation. In fact, the entire HR functions are handled by the Chief Administrator only. May our Loving and Gracious Lord continue to guide and bless us in the years to come as well. All Glory and Praise be to Him!

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

CHENNAI #2, Reddy Ave., 6th Cross St. Collectorate Colony PREPARED BY JOHN OSBORNE Aminjikarai Chennai - 600029

www.iida-india.org INTRODUCTION

The Research and Development department of IIDA involves a wide variety of activities. From connecting with companies/organisations/businesses for collaboration, funding and CSR to working one on one with members of other departments and analysing the organisations activities to help it become more efficient and sustainable. The staff involved in R&D work closely with the HO administration team, the Media team, the HO finance team and the CCHO team, and have worked specifically in Pallavaram and GTC to develop products and systems for income generation. Although IIDA’s desire to become sustainable by 2020 plays an important role in the basis of which the research and development occurs, the idea at the centre of all our activities is empowering the underprivileged and we aim not only, to find ways in which to make IIDA sustainable but also ways to further empower the underprivileged, whether that be through new initiatives or improving our existing activities.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR

Staff attended a specific Income tax 1 day workshop run by IIDA’s auditor. This provided valuable knowledge to help IIDA become more efficient and meet the requirements of the income tax laws

- Staff attended at 3 day NPO governance and compliance workshop at Loyola college giving great insight into the systems for financial management of NPO’s as well as specific and valuable information about governance and compliance for NPOs. This has led to recommendations made to the board for the future.

- John Osborne and Greame Osborne were invited to carry out a review of the financial systems in IIDA. This was completed and many recommendations made to the finance sub-committee.

- In collaboration with the Media team the CMP project was initiated, this was a collaboration with Collage of Media and Publishing offering Indian students online courses in media and publishing.

- In collaboration with the Media team a whatsapp group was created to IIDA to feed information to and interact with current students and provide a safe and private platform for those students in need of help to reach out.

- The R&D department was involved in improving the quality and delivery of training products made in Pallavaram and GTC.

- The R&D department helped Pallavaram and GTC to apply for and receive CSR funding for improvement projects. This included an aquaponics project for Pallavaram.

STRUGGLES OF THE YEAR

There have been many smaller struggles but overall this has been a very productive and positive year. There has been limited response from companies and organisation for funding opportunities.

The collaborations with SEHPL and CMP have not been successful and have ended for the time being.

We have had to initiate some reporting structures for the betterment of the efficiency and transparency of IIDA. This has come across some resistance.

FUTURE PLANS

The coming year is uncertain for the R&D team as the role of the department may change and the spectrum of operation way broaden quite dramatically.

There is hope that many of the suggestions made by the visiting experts can be taken on board and implemented.

Working closely with the finance team we hope to initiate some simple changes that will help track developments in income opportunities.

The R&D team along with the media department is working to develop a database system that will be a huge resource for reporting and information once finished. It is being designed for the entry and storage of all student information, past and present. It will enable the IIDA team to query information on student numbers, fees, fee payment patterns, past students, admission patterns, and methods of promotion to list just a few. We hope to have this done by early the next academic year.

CONCLUSION

It has been a year of learning and growing for the R&D department. The department has developed relationships with all the other departments in IIDA and has worked closely with some to develop projects and systems for the benefit of IIDA. I personally have learnt and grown from getting to know and working with each and every person in IIDA. The coming year holds endless possibilities and I hope that IIDA as a whole and the R&D department can continue to research and develop systems, sources and projects that work to further empower the underprivileged youth that the organisation wishes to serve.

INTRODUCTION

The Media & Communications is a small but vibrant team that plays a significant role in projecting the image of IIDA through website, social media, and print media. The Media & Communications team closely associates with the main streams of IIDA such as the Head Office, Community Colleges, Industrial Training Schools, Hostel & Homes and Research & Development to provide visually appealing content to the current trends of Digital Media and Technology.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE YEAR

1) Branding & Communications: Our main focus for the year was branding and communications - we made sure that all the content that has been produced to date were designed and published by the media team. We also made sure that all the staff of IIDA followed the brand guidelines to maintain uniformity across all the branches of IIDA.

2) ISHA: Since WhatsApp has become a major mode of communication, we collaborated with the R&D team to introduced ISHA (IIDA Student Help Assistant) to the students of Community Colleges to get in touch which them by posting weekly Quotes, useful tips and updates through WhatsApp broadcast.

3) Website: Our official website http://iida-india.org/ has been the main source of information for many users, we make sure that the content is updated on a regular basis. We have successfully integrated Online Fee Payment in collaboration with Axis Bank for the students of IIDA. More than 13,326 people have viewed our website over the past one year.

4) Facebook: We update our official Facebook page on a regular basis. On an average, we receive 1000 views per week. As of now, IIDA has 1074 Facebook followers.

5) Designing: The major design work was during the IIDA’s 45th Anniversary promotional activities and Admissions for the Community Colleges and ITI.

6) Branch Visits: We have visited a couple of branches to keep our website gallery and our Facebook pages updated.

7) Media Workshop: The GoodNews Channel in collaboration with the ICMA (Indian Christian Media Association) organized a one day workshop. It was attended by Jason; the main aim of the workshop was to train Christian leaders and Organisations on how to face today’s media with confidence and courage.

8) Student Database Management System (DMS): Keeping the current digital trends in mind, John Osborne (R&D Consultant) along with Jason came up with a futuristic idea to completely transform IIDA’s offline data to online database management system. This feature will enable the management of IIDA to have complete data access of the Community Colleges, ITI, and Skill Centres.

STRUGGLES OF THE YEAR

- One major struggle that we faced was while setting up ISHA (IIDA Student Help Assistant) as the response from the students was inadequate. - In spite of taking great efforts to make IIDA’s online presence more significant, we were only able to attract few followers on IIDA’s official Facebook page.

FUTURE PLANS

- To fully design and develop the Student Database Management System - To make IIDA’s online presence more significant - To make sure that every staff of IIDA follow the brand guidelines - To work on promotional material for IIDA

CONCLUSION

We faced a couple of challenges sporadically but eventually, it has been a great year for the Media team of IIDA as it became well established like never before and were able to render effective and dynamic outcomes.

INTRODUCTION

The tailoring centre at Aminjikarai is one of IIDA’s oldest running vocational trainings. Till this day, we are able to provide low-cost tailoring training for the young women in the area. What we offer them is a basic 3-month tailoring program in which they will be able to learn basic tailoring that will allow them to be able to sew and make money at home.

Tailoring Production This year we have only had a few orders from Australia and some small local sales. We were able to have some sales at IJM at Christmas that gave us a good income. The two young women we have in production are extremely talented and we are planning on sending one of them for further training in a government certified training that will also give her the ability to teach others.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR a. Resident Story This year we have had the privilege of introducing more girls to our CC hostel. One of them is Priya, who is a big help to the entire campus. Priya has had a very difficult beginning to her life. Her mother passed away when she was young and her father didn’t feel like he could care for her any more. So she was left in the care of her relatives. Since her relatives couldn’t care for her well, they dropped her off at a home for orphans. She had a difficult time until it shut down. After it shut down, doors were opened for her to join the Samaria Home run by Subash, a board member. When Priya finished her 12th exams, she joined us here to study General Duty Assistant. She has finished her first year and is now doing her internship at Noble hospital. She has the ability to look through difficult situations to find hope in even the most meager of situations. She believes this is why God has blessed her to join us here at the Women’s Community Centre. She is now living her best life here at IIDA, learning more about God, herself and life each day.

b. Please see Improvements on Infrastructure

c. Events i. Outing with young hostel women to snake park and guindy park ii. Bi-monthly outings with young women to malls or parks iii. Sales for tailoring held at Christmas time

INTRODUCTION

We are glad to present our hostel report for the year 2018 – 19. We thank our God Almighty who enabled us to complete yet another year. We had a good year overall in the view our students training, students stay and staff. We will be sharing some happenings and issues we had last year.

Year Established : 1974 The boys’ hostel was started way back in the year 1974 along with IIDA Industrial School at Pallavaram, South Chennai. Though it had 7 students initially, the student’s number increased every year. In the year 1987, the hostel building was extended to accommodate 75 plus students. So far, thousands of students have successfully completed their training with the unforgettable memory of the hostel.

From the year 2005, the students’ strength in the Hostel is decreasing every year due to the introduction of Day Scholar scheme. From the year 2011, we are giving an opportunity to our outstation students to stay in our Hostel at a nominal fee and work, after completing their training with IIDA. Every year 6 to 8 students are benefitted through this facility.

At present, we are not encouraging everyone to stay in the hostel for training. We admit only the deserving students in the hostel, due to lack of funds.

He says, he learned many things in IIDA through his training and staying in the hostel. He went through our weekly care programme and he understood the real meaning of life. We, wish him all the best for his bright future and appreciation to his aim of higher studies which is not common among ITI students.

Character Building Programme: IIDA is not only interested in training the youth for a better future but also in their holistic transformation. Building their character is much more important than just skill training. So from last year, IIDA appointed Mr. Daniel Moses as Student Counselor mainly to concentrate on student’s behavioral changes. This new initiative help the students to know the truth of life and adopt good and godly character in them in order to live a quality life in the society. We give them personal counseling, teaching them the values of life and helping them to find the purpose of their life in the world.

We counsel the students individually and encourage them to come out of their bad habits, if any. We teach them the joy of being faithful even in small things than trying to achieve something big in life. We put them on the path of holistic transformation so that they can build their life with the good values.

+91 25582110 [email protected] www.iida-india.org

INTRODUCTION

The journey of IIDA Community College at this location began in 2010 with a vision of “Value- based holistic training and rehabilitation to the poor youth, the unemployed and the underprivileged” by Mr.Jochen and Mrs.Johshy Tewes, the founders of IIDA. From 2010, the Community College was running in Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar in the midst of building dispute. After hard efforts, we found a new building in the area of Perambur. This location is easily reachable from various parts of North Chennai.

The College aims to develop the knowledge of young girls and boys to increase their understanding of life and to build them up. Many of the students are coming from broken families, affected by domestic violence due to drugs, alcohol and poverty. Since its inception at Perambur, students have been enjoying our systematic syllabus with good teaching in technical and soft skills and attending with full involvement during theory and practical classes.

When joining, many of the students don’t know the purpose of life and value of education. But, being with us a year, many realize their goal in life and understand how much education is actually uplifting them. After completion of their courses, the students get placed in good jobs and we guide them further how to maintain good (working) relationships and develop their personal lives.

IMPROVEMENTS ON INFRASTRUCTURE

Newly painted Hall

STRUGGLES OF THE YEAR With lot of efforts, more students joined in our centre; but the basic facilities like infrastructure, toilet facilities etc are lacking. From the feed back of the students, the same was reflected. Difficulties such as cancellation of Students bus pass and scholarship by the TNO University affected all day scholars. Students have to spend minimum Rs. 800 to Rs. 1000 monthly for their travel from home to college. This was the main reason for the poor students, who can’t afford, to dropout and discontinue the course. Challenges such as emerging of the new vocational colleges and free seats in engineering & arts colleges nearby our place are also a reason. People (parents) are very much concerned of the infrastructure and certification of the students.

ACHIEVEMENTS Admissions There were 175 students (including second year) in the academic year2018- 2019. There are 125students admitted in the first year and 50 students continued in the second year. All the second year students were placed for internship in local hospitals, Service centers and in private companies, whereas few are doing their own business. Some of them opted for higher studies

Funfirst Program Funded short term Air-conditioning course (40days) was started in partnership with Funfirst and completed successfully with 30 students in a batch in our centre. All the students were practically trained well through this course and placed in several Ac service centres and in private companies.

Program

45th Anniversary –competitions & sports celebration in our Centre (CM) On behalf of 45th anniversary, we have conducted competitions and sports for the nearby school students on 16th and 17thFebruary and volleyball competions on 22nd February. Nearly 200 students participated in the program. It was a good opportunity for us to be familiar with the school students and got good response from the schools and the community.

Christmas program

This year, Christmas program was celebrated on 21st December in our centre (CM). Respected & dear uncle and Principal were the chief quests and many well wishers and local officials participated. It was a great blessing event of the year. We closed the program with a good lunch-briyani.

Nutrition- Program By our Nursing student, Community Awareness Program.

FUNDRAISING INITIATIVES For the sustainability of the center, we have involved in various fund raising and income generation activities such as local donations, electrical contract works, Ac servicing works etc and through these we got some amount of funds and still we are doing our best to make the center sustainable. We hope our center will be sustainable in the coming year.

FUTURE PLANS FOR THE NEXT YEAR As our center is one of the best and popular among other colleges, local society strongly trusts us. But, we are in need of improvement in the infrastructure (new building) at the earliest to increase the admissions every year and to maintain our students’ strength. Once we have the good infrastructure, we can include additional courses such as welding, tailoring, and few higher end courses such as catering, hotel management etc. Some realistic initiatives that can be implemented for the next year Initiatives for next year: 1. Adding new courses which are in demand such as welding, catering etc. 2. For sustainability: To get more electrical and Ac contract and maintenance type of works to raise the funds 3. To start a new service center of our own -Electrical, and AC. 4. To start a new daycare center 5. To improve the facilities such as transport, canteen for students etc.

OVERALL SUMMARY

We are happy to share our Annual report 2018-2019. We conducted many events, special activities, transformation programs etc. and many visitors visited our campus. Many students before the graduation, immediately after finishing the diploma, got placement in the respective fields.

We would like to thank our Respected President and co-president for guiding us and encouraging us throughout the year. Also I thank and appreciate our whole team (Staffs) for cooperating and helping to reach the goal together.

She came to IIDA and enrolled in part time tailoring course. Our staff encouraged her and now she has full hope on her own and has a successful future. She got good training and now very competent in tailoring.

FUTURE PLANS FOR THE NEXT YEAR

IIDA is a well-known organization since 1974. We don’t have many community colleges in rural places like Chettupattu. We are planning to give Skill based dual training to our students; 6 months theory class in our college and 6 months internship in a company to equip our students. As we are entering into NSDC affiliation, it will be greatly useful for the students to receive their certificate from “Central Government” and it will bring a good reputation to our college.

We wanted our students to work in a level equal to the professionals, and so we conducted an on the job training for the students with the help of our alumni Mr. SETTU DURAI in his own company, where the students work with the real time mechanical jobs to sharpen their skills learnt from IIDA.

4. DSLR photography practical one to one workshop for ADCA students.

We wanted our students to be a creative and enthusiastic thinker in approaching the clients. For that, only knowing to do editing work is not enough; they must be empowered with an ability to take picture and video using professional DSLR camera. We gave the opportunity for one to one training to ensure every student gets well trained in these skills.

5. DRUMS CLASS INTRODUCED THIS YEAR FOR STUDENTS

This class was introduced for two main reasons, one is to make our students learn drums and come out from their shyness and the second reason is to insist in the minds of the students that nothing is impossible to learn.

IMPROVEMENTS IN INFRASTRUCTURE

1. We have purchased the basic tools for Air Conditioning Course.

2. Water proofing was done in the main hall with THAR sheet to prevent water leakage during rainy seasons.

KEY ACHEIVEMENT OF THE YEAR:

We have taught the students many of the skills without buying the equipment but by renting them. This was done to achieve cost saving. Hands on practical training was given to students to work in various areas skillfully.

STRUGGLES OF THE YEAR

• We are facing great struggle due to the interrupted power supply which becomes a main drawback to the students who study here. • Termites are the next main problem we face, which damages our furniture, doors and windows which forms a non professional image towards infrastructure. • We need a good lab setup for electrician and beautician in order to use for training and fund raising. • We experienced a great lack in part time admission because of not having a tailoring instructor in this academic year.

OTHER ISSUES

The main issue which we are facing was lack of infrastructure which directly affects the admission.

FUNDRAISING INITIATIVES

• We could use three methods for fund raising: • Method 1: Conducting satellite classes in NGOs, Churches and organizations • Method 2: Tailoring Production (stitching chudidhar, blouse, etc.) • Method 3: Beautician training to school students as workshop.

PLACEMENT DETAILS

All our IIDA students have been placed in various jobs successfully. Among them, PAVIN KUMAR from DGM department was placed in HONDA GENERATOR industries private ltd as electrical maintenance operator.

FUTURE PLANS IN IIDA

Our main goal is to make IIDA a well known brand and self-sustainable to both organization and students. So, we are working in a way to form a cyclic process. We try to implement the practical sessions of the student during his/her studies in the local companies. As a result, the students get well trained in practical field and get a good stipend. Part of that stipend will go to college and the other part will go to the students to meet the college fees.

These measures have been taken to bring a positive mindset to students and public that IIDA is a perfect place to learn & earn. And we are also planning to organize all part time courses in online mode to expand IIDA wider beyond limits.

INITATIVES NEXT YEAR

If we can collaborate with MICROSOFT, TALLY, ADOBE, COREL etc, it will be a direct elevation in both branding and admission which will lead to tremendous growth of the college.
