TIRUVANNAMALAI DISTRICT Tiruvannamalai District (Also Known As Thiruvannaamalai) Is One of the 32 Districts in the State of Tamil Nadu, in South India TIRUVANNAMALAI DISTRICT Tiruvannamalai District (also known as Thiruvannaamalai) is one of the 32 districts in the state of Tamil Nadu, in South India. It was formed in the year 1989 from non-existing North Arcot District as Tiruvannamalai Sambuvarayar and Vellore Ambedkar. Tiruvannamalai town is the district headquarters. The district is divided into 12 Taluks - Chengam, Tiruvannamalai, Polur, Thandarampattu, Aarani, Vandavasi, kalasapakkam, chetpet , Cheyyar and vembakkam . The District lies between 12º 00'00’’to 12º 52’30’Northlatitude and East Longitude 78º 39’30’’ to 79º 45’36’’. The total geographical extent of the area is 6190 Sq.Km. There are 18 Blocks, 860 Villages and 4755 Habitations in the District. A total of 272,569 were under the age of six, constituting 141,205 males and 131,364 females. Tiruvannamalai District has an area of 6,191 km2. It is bounded on the north by Vellore District, on the east by Kanchipuram District, on the south by Villupuram District, and on the west by Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts. Tiruvannamalai District is divided into ten taluks, 27 blocks and 1,061 villages covering an area of 631,205 ha. The western part of the district is covered by Javadhu hill ranges while the eastern part is characterized by isolated hillocks. Tiruvannamalai hill occurs right in the centre of the town with an elevation of 800m (2668ft). There are many isolated hillocks and tor complexes seen in Tiruvannamalai, Thandarampet, Chengam, Polur, Arni and Kalasapakkam blocks. The major rivers traversing the area are Ponnaiyar and Cheyyar. The major part of the district falls under the Palar sub catchment and extreme southern part of the district fall under Ponnaiyar sub catchment. RAINFALL The average annual rainfall and the 5 years rainfall collected from IMD, Chennai is as follows: GEOLOGY GROUND WATER LEVEL The Ground Water levels from the 58 number of observation wells of TWAD have been analysed for Post-Monsoon and Pre-Monsoon. Detailed Development Plan. Initially ONGC has proposed Development Drilling of 66 wells in 7 ML/NELP blocks i.e. Bhuvanagiri, Madanam, Pallivaramangalam, Vijayapuram, Periyakudi, Thulasiapattinam and Pundi which are located in Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Thanjavur districts of Tamil Nadu. The estimated cost of the proposed project is 264 INR crores. The Public Hearing for the Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Tanjavur districts has been conducted on 20.06.2014, 27.06.2014 and 10.07.2014 respectively. The Public Hearing in Cuddalore District is yet to be conducted (awaiting for District Collector’s permission) but in present flood conditions, it cannot be conducted in near future. Hence Environment Clearance may be considered only for 46 wells only against 66 wells leaving the wells in Cuddalore district. For Cuddalore district wells separate proposal will be submitted. The details of the proposed drilling activity with respect to numbers of wells in each block and the production expected are given in the table below: S.
