Without underestimating the significance of security and conflict within the structure of the Israeli state, in this thesis the Arab–Jewish relationship is viewed as just one important cleavage within the Israeli state. Instead of focusing on this single cleavage, this thesis explores the complex structure of cleavages at the heart of the Israeli political system. It introduces the concept of a ‘cleavage pyramid’, whereby divisions are of different saliency to different groups. At the top of the pyramid is division between Arabs and Jews, but one rung down from this are the intra-Jewish divisions, be they religious, ethnic or political in nature. In the case of Shas, the religious and ethnic elements are the most salient. The secular–religious divide is a key fault line in Israel and one in which ultra-orthodox parties like Shas are at the forefront. They and their politically secular counterparts form a key division in Israel, and an exploration of Shas is an insightful means of exploring this division further, its history and causes, and how these groups interact politically. -

Erev Rosh Hashanah Sermon Rabbi Josh Whinston Last March, on a trip to Honduras, a trip on which I only expected to be discussing the situation in Central America, I found myself in a conversation about Israel. Roxana was born in Lima, Peru. She immigrated to the United States when she was a young girl. Her father had been a member of the Peruvian Congress, and they had to flee in the 1980s. We spoke about her sense of America and migration, we talked about the way she believed the world could work. She told me she didn’t believe in nation-states. Roxana then began to shift the conversation. She brought up Israel and began to talk about her take on the country. She stopped herself after a few seconds and asked me, “You know, I don’t know where you stand on Israel.” I hesitated for a moment and then said, “Well, I like to think of myself as a progressive Zionist.” Roxana looked at me with confusion, “What’s that?” were the next words out of her mouth. I am beginning my 4th year as your rabbi, and I have yet to speak about Israel. I haven’t spoken on Israel at Shabbat services, and I haven’t spoken on Israel during any of my previous High Holy Day sermons. I haven’t spoken about Israel, and I recall only one member of our congregation asking me about this. I imagine some of you have noticed, but only one person decided to say something. It is a sad statement that no matter what I say about Israel, I am sure there are folks here who will be upset. -

“Connecting to Israel as a Reform Jew” Yom Kippur Morning Sermon Rabbi Jordan M. Ottenstein, RJE Congregation Dor Tamid, Johns Creek, Georgia September 30, 2017/10 Tishrei 5778 A few weeks ago, the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta hosted a breakfast meeting with local rabbis and a number of members of the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, at the Temple downtown. It was a great opportunity for my colleagues and me to hear from representatives of the Israeli government and the opposition parties as they expressed their hopes and aspirations for mutual cooperation and understanding between Israel and the American Jewish community. This meeting was also an opportunity for these high-ranking Israeli official to hear our concerns, our issues, and our anxieties about the current state of affairs in the Jewish state. We all went into the meeting with a sense of encouragement, eager to listen to each other, share with each other, and build a relationship based on a mutual desire to strengthen our bonds to each other. And yet, it was not surprising to me that I walked out of the meeting upset and with a feeling that I, along with my other colleagues, had not be heard. As many of you know, there are currently a number of issues in Israel that are affecting the relationship between the State of Israel, specifically its government, and the non-Orthodox Jewish community in the diaspora. First and foremost of these issues centers around the kotel, the Western Wall. While not always the case, the kotel is currently administered by the Western Wall Heritage Foundation, led by Rabbi Schmuel Rabinowitz. -

Excerpts From: REFOR ZIONISM AN EDUCATOR'S PERSPECTIVE MICHAEL LIVNI (LANGER) Section 1 -Reform Judaism and Zionism JERUSALEM + NEW YORK SECTION 1 • NUMBER ONE Perspectives for on Action Program: Reform Judaism and Zionism os Jewish Responses to the Modern Age1 The Modern Age ontl Humon Evolution Reform Judaism and Zionism have been in the past and continue to be in the present responses of the Jewish people to the challenge of what we may broadly described as the Modem Age. The coming of the Modern Age probably consti tutes the greatest discontinuity not only in the 6,000-year recorded history of mankind, but also in the three to four million year evolutionary history of the genus Homo. The challenges that the Modern Age posed (and poses) for the Jewish people are really secondary to this major discontinuity that the Modern Age constitutes for all mankind. As Rene Dubois has pointed out in his book "The God Within,"2 during the millions of years since humans first made their appearance, the normative social environment was the small group or band. During the last 5,000 to 10,000 years when we gradually developed sedentary habits, the normative community became the village. In either case, the social basis was a relatively small group, generally an extended family group or perhaps a group of extended families which formed a community. The ecology of the group was a rural one. The social cohesion of such communities was maintained by a framework of implicit mutual obligations between members. At a later stage (corresponding to the beginnings of recorded history), such mutual obligations became more explicit. -

History of the Association of Reform Zionists of America A Rabbinical Thesis by Rabbi Michael Satz The American Reform Movement has had a mixed history when it comes to its attitudes to Zionism. The 1885 Pittsburgh Platform clearly states, “[We] therefore expect neither a return to Palestine . nor the restoration of any of the laws concerning the Jewish state.” With the influence of pro-Zionist rabbis like Abba Hillel Silver and Stephen S. Wise, by 1937 the Columbus Platform of the Central Conference of American Rabbis reads, “We affirm the obligation of all Jewry to aid in its [Palestine's] up-building as a Jewish homeland by endeavoring to make it not only a haven of refuge for the oppressed but also a center of Jewish culture and spiritual life.” In a little over fifty years the Reform Movement changed from an anti-Zionist stance to one that was supportive of both political and cultural Zionist thought, but it did not yet advocate for a Jewish state. By the 1970’s the Reform Movement had not only fully accepted the State of Israel, but was seeking to influence its nature. Israel had been in existence for two decades, and there was a sense of euphoria about its strength after the 1967 Six Day War. This is reflected in the 1976 CCAR platform: “We are bound to . the newly reborn State of Israel by innumerable religious and ethnic ties . We have both a stake and a responsibility in building the State of Israel, assuring its security and defining its Jewish character.” One year later the Union of American Hebrew Congregations decided to step into the political world of the Zionist movement by establishing the Association of Reform Zionists of America (ARZA). -
