Practicing English through Movies Juliane Garcia Introduction This book is basically a collection of quizzes to be used in the English as a Foreign Language – EFL – classroom. Here you can find different genres of movies to be used with specific groups of students. The teacher will know the kind of movie his/her students prefer or will ask them to choose it. There are movies from different countries, in case the class objective is to emphasize accents such as American, British and Irish. All the quizzes have already been used in class. Some of the questions are based on the general understanding of the movie, but most of them are about a detail, for the fun of testing the memory, and forgetting they are in an English class. The subjects go from Christmas and family relationship to hip-hop and comics passing by discussions about the environment and terrorism. So, we are sure that the teachers will be able to use their creativity and prepare wonderful classes. There is no specific English level to use this material. It was firstly prepared to be used with upper- intermediate students in conversations classes, but it does not mean that it cannot make a really good beginners class stimulating the students to watch movies in English and developing their vocabulary through the movie and the quiz. Student’s point of view Watching movies can be a very good way to improve your English. It helps you with the pronunciation, as you listen to native speakers using the language. Subtitles can be used to understand the scenes better then you can watch them many times, with or without the subtitles. Movies provide you with different English accents too. Each movie is centered in a subject that allows you to add more words of a specific topic to your vocabulary so you can discuss about this topic and improve your speaking when you express your point of view to other people. You can have fun answering movie quizzes and looking for movie mistakes on the Internet. Also, you can research for more information about the movie story and behind the scenes giving you a way to get more involved with subjects of your interest. Movies are the best way to learn English, you improve your listening and comprehension skills increase your vocabulary and English language expressions, besides, it helps you to improve your pronunciation. The more you learn English the easier and natural it is to express yourself in this language. Kátia Vivi Kuhn How to use the material The group of students has watched the movie. To start the discussion, ask them to tell what happens in the story. Give the students some minutes to complete the quiz. Check their answers and watch parts of the movie to double check some of the quiz answers. All the answers are in the end of this book. This is just a suggestion. Each teacher will have his/her own ideas of how to use the material. 1. The Weather Man (2005) with Nicholas Cage.
