SONS OF CONFEDERATE VETERANS-MECHANIZED CAVALRY May-June 2014 July Picture 1. Saturday, June 7th we took a group picture near the ‘High Water Mark’ of Pickett’s Charge. Volun- teers from the SCV Mechanized Cavalry retraced the charge made by Confederate forces on July 3, 1863 from both the North Carolina and Virginia Monuments at the Gettysburg National Military Park. 1. The 17th Annual Sons of Confederate Veterans Mechanized Cavalry, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania: June 4 to 7, 2014—The Second Assault. We had beautiful weather the entire time. The first run to the Battlefield on Thursday was held up to let a few rain clouds pass but otherwise the days began cool but warmed up quickly. We left the camp grounds with 53 bikes and ended up with over 60 by the time we got to the first assembly point where Mark Hall from North Carolina gave us an explanation of the first day of developments in the fighting at Gettysburg. Mark led us through the days events as we rode the trail of military movements on the battlefield. Captain ‘Bubba’ Eldreth reported that we had 137 registrations for this event known as ‘the Second Assault.’ The event started on Wednesday with Officers Call at 6 PM and ended late Saturday evening. Most of us arrived on Wednesday, others would arrive during the next three days and some would leave Saturday morning. But whatever time you spent was put to good use: if not by the daily tours of the battlefield then at least by renewing old Picture 2. Many brought their bama, Tim Pedigrew from Texas, and our guide for the wives or girlfriends and turned ‘The Second Assault’ into a vacation. It sure was pretty country and we did next three days Mark Hall from North Carolina. have the best weather: mid fifties at first light and mid seventies by mid day and not a drop of rain except for the few drops on Thursday morning.
