Intro 1996 National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary (1996 National List). The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment. -

The wild tomatillo, Physalis longifolia Nutt., and related species have been important wild-harvested foods and medicinal plants. This paper reviews their traditional use as food and medicine; it also discusses taxonomic difficulties and provides information on recent medicinal chemistry discoveries within this and related species. Subtle morphological differences recognized by taxonomists to distinguish this species from closely related taxa can be confusing to botanists and ethnobotanists, and many of these differences are not considered to be important by indigenous people. Therefore, the food and medicinal uses reported here include information for P. longifolia, as well as uses for several related taxa found north of Mexico. The importance of wild Physalis species as food is reported by many tribes, and its long history of use is evidenced by frequent discovery in archaeological sites. These plants may have been cultivated, or “tended,” by Pueblo farmers and other tribes. The importance of this plant as medicine is made evident through its historical ethnobotanical use, information in recent literature on Physalis species pharmacology, and our Native Medicinal Plant Research Program’s recent discovery of 14 new natural products, some of which have potent anti-cancer activity. -

Leaves on petioles (10-)20-60 mm long; lamina variable, 10-50(-80) x 8-40(-76) mm, green, yellow-green, dark-green, often blotched or tinged maroon, sometimes purple-green; ovate, ovate-oblong, lanceolate-ovate, entire, sinnuate or coarsely toothed (sometimes distantly so), rarely lobulate, base attenuate to broadly attenuate, sometimes narrowly winged; apex acute. Inflorescences, umbellate, (3-)5-6(-10)-flowered, peduncles stout, 10-20 mm long, pedicels deflexed (strongly so at fruiting). Calyx 2-3 mm diameter at anthesis, accrescent; lobes broadly ovate to oblong, usually strongly reflexed at fruiting (sometimes with mixtures of mostly reflexed, and some weakly accrescent). Corolla 5-8 mm diameter, stellate, white or pale mauve, lobes narrowly lanceolate to narrowly deltoid. Anthers 1.0-1.5 mm. Berry up to 10 mm diameter, globose, green, purple-black or black, dull (not glossy); stone cells present. -

E-mail: Abstract: The Rondônia Natural Resources Management Project (PLANAFLORO) was a strategic program developed in partnership between the Brazilian Government and The World Bank in 1992, with the purpose of stimulating the sustainable development and protection of the Amazon in the state of Rondônia. More than a decade after the PLANAFORO program concluded, the aim of the present work is to recover and share the information from the long-abandoned plant collections made during the project’s ecological-economic zoning phase. Most of the material analyzed was sterile, but the fertile voucher specimens recovered are listed here. The material examined represents 378 species in 234 genera and 76 families of angiosperms. Some 8 genera, 68 species, 3 subspecies and 1 variety are new records for Rondônia State. It is our intention that this information will stimulate future studies and contribute to a better understanding and more effective conservation of the plant diversity in the southwestern Amazon of Brazil. Dean, sp. nov. and Lycianthes michaelneei E. Dean, sp. nov. , are described from eastern Mexico, the former from the state of Puebla and the latter from the state of Veracruz. Both species belong to series Tricolores Bitter, which is made up of six species of shrubs with simple trichomes and that are distributed from Nicaragua to western Mexico. Lycianthes (Dun.) Hassler (Solanaceae) has both Old World and New World representatives and includes 150 to 200 species (Hunziker 2001). Its center of distribution, and the majority of its taxa, are found in the New World (from Mexico to Argentina), with ca. 30 taxa native to Mexico (ca. 14 endemic, two of them described here). The genus is the closest relative of the chile pepper genus Capsicum L. (Walsh & Hoot 2001; Bohs & Olmstead 1997), a relationship that was first pointed out by the German botanist Georg Bitter (Bitter 1919). The two genera have a similar calyx morphology, with the five lobes of the calyx truncated into a sleeve, below which may protrude five to ten appendages (commonly called calyx teeth). However, while Capsicum species have anthers that dehisce by longitudinal slits, the species of Lycianthes typically have poricidal anther dehiscence. -

Abstract: This work was conducted to characterise the physical and mechanical properties of Physalis angulata. At a moisture content of 76.50 ± 1.10% wb, the study showed that the average polar, equatorial and geometric diameters were 13.49 ± 0.69 mm, 12.92±0.76 mm, 13.10±0.66 mm. The surface area, mass and volume were 540.19±54.55 mm2, 1.39 ± 0.20 gr and 2.63 ± 0.47 cm3 respectively. The particle and bulk densities were 0.53 ± 0.04 gr/cm3 and 0.42± 0.005 gr/cm3. The sphericity, aspect ratio and porosity ranged from, 97.17 ± 3.51 %, 95.84 ± 5.18%, and 20.26 ± 6.63% respectively. The fruits were spherical, and the colour was pale yellow with the value of CIE l*a*b* and CIE l*c*h* of (37.80 ± 0.010, 1.85 ± 0.023, 10.79 ± 0.006), and (37.80 ± 0.010, 10.95 ± 0.007, 0.002 ± 0.002) respectively. The average hardness, gumminess, adhesiveness, chewiness, cohesiveness , resilience and springiness ranged from 625.01± 101.97 gf, 346.74±64.28 gf, -2.27± 0.60 gf/sec, 27.41±5.79 gf/sec, 0.57± 0.13, 0.32 ± 0.12 and 0.08 ± 0.008 respectively.
