newsroom null Aug 24, 2014 Earl Bamber moves into overall lead Earl Bamber celebrated his second win of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season. In Spa, the Porsche Scholarship pilot moved to the top of the overall points’ standings. When the field set off into the eleven-lap race on the 6.973 kilometre circuit, Bamber immediately pulled to the front of the field in his 460 hp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup which is based on the seventh generation of the 911. But after several hundred metres, the New Zealand slid sideways in the legendary Eau Rouge passage, opening the door for Thiim to sneak past. After his scare, the 24-year-old, who contested his 50th race in a Porsche at Spa, caught the Dane and launched a hefty attack to regain the lead spot. Once Bamber finally managed to squeeze past Thiim in lap six, the path was clear to clinch his second win of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season. “Our fight was tough but very fair,” said Thiim (second place) summing up events. “Earl’s a great racer,” he admitted. Third place went to Porsche junior Klaus Bachler (A/Konrad Motorsport). “Fastest in free practice, pole position, victory and now the points’ leader – what a perfect weekend. I’m over the moon,” exclaimed a beaming Bamber. After 3,824 kilometers, Jules Gounon/Christopher Haase/Markus Winkelhock had a winning advantage of 11.862 seconds. In a very balanced competition, four marques were battling for victory up until the end and ultimately claimed the top four positions. Audi Sport Team Saintéloc in its first factory-backed commitment with Audi Sport customer racing shone with a convincing performance. In the world’s toughest GT3 race, the number 25 Audi R8 LMS ran impeccably, its drivers having stayed clear of all trouble and ending the race without any sporting penalties. In the penultimate hour of the race, Christopher Haase chased leader Raffaele Marciello over several laps until the Italian pitted. Following his own final service and the stops of his rivals, the 29-year-old Audi Sport campaigner took the lead and went on to celebrate his first victory at Spa. For Jules Gounon from the South of France, this success marked the first one he has clinched in this race and together with Audi as well. -

Hij had ook geld, moeizaam bijeengeschraapt via sponsors, investeerders en rijke vrienden. Zijn weg naar de Formule 1 verliep hortend en stotend. Toen hij eindelijk was gearriveerd in het koninkrijk van de vierwielers viel het wat tegen. Tweeënhalf jaar hield hij het uit. Tweeënhalf jaar in de achterhoede hangen, met teams die de olympische gedachte hoog in het vaandel hadden: meedoen is belangrijker dan winnen. Bij Midland, Spyker en Minardi, drie dezelfde teams met verschillende namen. Hij kwam niet eens in de buurt van het podium. Hoewel, in Amerika in 2006, waar hij zijn eerste en enige WK-punten behaalde, had het zomaar kunnen gebeuren. Er gingen dan ook maar zes wagens van start en hij eindigde als vijfde, net voor zijn teamgenoot. Het was een van de spannendste races uit zijn carrière op het oval van India- napolis. Christijan Albers, geboren in 1979, was misschien wel, na Jos en Max Verstappen, de derde Nederlandse coureur uit de geschiede- nis. Zijn Formule 1-carrière werd weliswaar overschaduwd door te veel (domme) crashes en te weinig succes, maar zijn palmares op weg naar de koningsklasse mocht er zijn. Hij was een gere- nommeerd dtm-coureur, won het Duitse Formule 3-kampioen- schap, reed 46 grands prix in de Formule 1 en haalde vier punten in het wereldkampioenschap. How do you look back on Portugal? Imola is another new one for us. I’m excited about going there as I think, as a team, we leave Portugal feeling neither happy nor too we’ve had a great run of racing at new places and I’ve enjoyed disappointed. It was a race where we wanted to score points to them all so far. It’s also back to another Italian race and I’ve had make sure we keep in touch with our direct rivals. From Friday it good results in Italy this year so I’m hoping to have another strong was clear the weekend would be tough, especially with learning one this weekend. I haven’t raced at Imola before and I’m sure the tyres, so to come away with some points is okay. We couldn’t there will be a bit of an aura about the place as there is so much do much more than eighth and ninth, so we go to Imola wanting history there and that will be nice to experience. to return to competing for the top six places. What do you know about the track? The track itself is a short one and I think overtaking will be difficult, but it’s a relatively long straight so we’ll have to see on Sunday. -
