“Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson
The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. I will illustrate the ways in which the process of signification functions within rock music to construct masculinities and within subcultures to negotiate authenticity. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank firstly my academic advisor Dr. William Echard for his continued patience with me during the thesis writing process and for his invaluable guidance. I also would like to send a big thank you to Dr. James Deaville, the head of Music and Culture program, who has given me much assistance along the way. -

Early STRATEGY of the MONTH EXTENDING
CORE WORD: Early For Educators, Related Service Providers and Parents STRATEGY OF THE MONTH EXTENDING, EXPANDING AND ELABORATING The AAC strategy of Extending, Expanding and Elaborating focuses on communication partners responding to what students express by providing immediate, (simultaneous) verbal and AAC system modeling based on the student's unique language goals. As an example, students at the single-word level may have a goal to produce two-word utterances and therefore the ‘add a word’ approach could be utilized, (providing modeling by adding a word to the utterance/word produced). Such added words could be targeted as: pronouns, verbs, or descriptors, (for added specificity). Intermediate to advanced communicators would have different, higher-level language goals and targets that are individualized. When using the Extending, Expanding and Elaborating approach, it is suggested that such modeling is carried out in a positive, upbeat tone and with correct grammar and syntax. WAYS WE CAN USE THE WORD SHARE INFORMATION: (e.g., I am early) ASK A QUESTION: (e.g., am I early?) DESCRIBE: (e.g., too early) NEGATE: (e.g., you are not early) ROUTINES AND SCHEDULES Circle: Adults and students can use early to indicate who was early to school during the morning circle time routine. 1 Snack time: Adults can lead students in a discussion about foods and the difference between what type of foods you eat early in the day such as breakfast food (e.g., eggs, toast, yogurt, etc.). PLAY Freeze Dance: Students can play freeze dance and when an adult or student pauses the music, students can point out if anyone stopped dancing too early. -

radar: sketch comedy show. TLC—who wrote the theme song— performed in two of the first three episodes. The pilot aired nearly seven months before their breakout album, CrazySexyCool, was released, giving 12-year-old viewers a chance to hear a new band before they made it big. The first season of the show also featured live performances by fresh faces, including Brandy, Aaliyah, and Usher, who at the point was still going by his full name, Usher Raymond. “If you look at the 10 years [that All That was on air], it’s a who’s who of music,” says Dan Schneider, the show’s creator. Pete & Pete also made a habit of featuring musicians whom you wouldn’t expect to see on any TV show, let alone one marketed to grade schoolers. David Johansen played a police officer; Debbie Harry, a neighbor; Juliana Hatfield, a lunch lady; Kate Pierson (of the B-52s), a blind millionaire; PRIME TIME and Michael Stipe, an ice cream man. Iggy Pop was a series regular, playing the overprotective father of Nona, Michelle Trachtenberg’s character. In the same episode that featured Luscious Jackson, he took to the stage and sang to his melissa daughter, begging her to dance with him. It was a far cry from joan “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” but I’m convinced that moment was influential enough for me to spend the better part of my hart late teens fanatically collecting his albums. The series’ soundtrack was equally important, with Apples in Stereo and Stephin Merritt of the Magnetic Fields, among others, contributing music to the show. -
Does Wine Have a Place in Kant's Theory of Taste?1
Does Wine Have a Place in Kant’s Theory of Taste?1 Rachel Cristy, Princeton University Kant’s own answer to my title question is “no.” One can make of a wine the merely subjective judgment that it is agreeable, never the universally valid judgment that it is beautiful. Here is Kant’s only remark on wine in the Critique of the Power of Judgment: With regard to the agreeable, everyone is content that his judgment, which he grounds on a private feeling, and in which he says of an object that it pleases him, be restricted merely to his own person. Hence he is perfectly happy if, when he says that sparkling wine from the Canaries is agreeable, someone else should improve his expression and remind him that he should say “It is agreeable to me”; and this is so not only in the case of the taste of the tongue, palate, and throat, but also in the case of that which may be agreeable to someone’s eyes and ears. (KU §7, 5: 212) Here is Kant’s explanation for why wine can’t be judged beautiful: “Aesthetic judgments can be divided into empirical and pure. The first are those which assert agreeableness or disagreeableness, the second those which assert beauty of an object… the former are judgments of sense (material aesthetic judgments), the latter (as formal) are alone proper judgments of taste” (§14, 5: 223). Not only flavors and aromas, but also “mere color, e.g., the green of a lawn” and “mere tone…say that of a violin” are relegated to judgments of agreeableness, because they “have as their ground merely the matter of the representations, namely mere sensation” (§14, 5: 224). -

Matching Grape Varieties to Sites Are Hybrid Varieties Right for Oklahoma?
Matching Grape Varieties to Sites Are hybrid varieties right for Oklahoma? Bruce Bordelon Purdue University Wine Grape Team 2014 Oklahoma Grape Growers Workshop 2006 survey of grape varieties in Oklahoma: Vinifera 80%. Hybrids 15% American 7% Muscadines 1% Profiles and Challenges…continued… • V. vinifera cultivars are the most widely grown in Oklahoma…; however, observation and research has shown most European cultivars to be highly susceptible to cold damage. • More research needs to be conducted to elicit where European cultivars will do best in Oklahoma. • French-American hybrids are good alternatives due to their better cold tolerance, but have not been embraced by Oklahoma grape growers... Reasons for this bias likely include hybrid cultivars being perceived as lower quality than European cultivars, lack of knowledge of available hybrid cultivars, personal preference, and misinformation. Profiles and Challenges…continued… • The unpredictable continental climate of Oklahoma is one of the foremost obstacles for potential grape growers. • It is essential that appropriate site selection be done prior to planting. • Many locations in Oklahoma are unsuitable for most grapes, including hybrids and American grapes. • Growing grapes in Oklahoma is a risky endeavor and minimization of potential loss by consideration of cultivar and environmental interactions is paramount to ensure long-term success. • There are areas where some European cultivars may succeed. • Many hybrid and American grapes are better suited for most areas of Oklahoma than -
God's Favorite Customer by Father John Misty
Father John Misty – “God’s Favorite Customer” The artist behind the ego: Josh Tillman, mostly known by his performance nom de guerre Father John Misty, is a Maryland born indie folk/rock singer; although he began his musical career as a drummer playing for minor indie bands like Saxon Shore while working in a bakery for a day job. He was born in an evangelical household and was very religious during his youth, something he resented his parents for when he grew up. While working as a drummer, he wrote music for himself in his free time. He attended a private Christian college but dropped out as he felt more comfortable in his music career. Through touring, he made connections with other artists and his demos made their way to Damien Jurado, a fellow Sub Pop artist. He would then go on to open for Jurado. In 2006, he had his first studio album released under the moniker J. Tillman. He then went on to produce four more albums (eight in total), with the last one being released in 2010. During his J. Tillman years, a lot of the music he made was very folk and has joked about the music he made being “sad bastard music.” He found very little success doing folk albums. During this time as J. Tillman, he joined the indie band Fleet Foxes as the drummer. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he stated that, “With Fleet Foxes I had to confront a certain sacred cow in my life, which was the idea that if I was in a popular band, if I just get to be a working musician, then that’s going to be the antidote for all the boredom and pain in my life. -
