Editorial

Welcome to the May issue.

Don’t forget to enter the Front Row Festival competi- tion on page 19 to win a family ticket to the festival on June 29th.

We miss Headumper this month as he is poorly and we all wish him a speedy recovery. GasMask has responded to last month’s piece about air pollution however on page 10.

If you feel like a new challenge to go with the spring-like weather, have a look at the volunteering opportunities on page 4. Charity begins at home.

We’re hoping to have a regulaor piece from our MP Victoria Prentice, and this month we see a rerport of her visit to Souldern. All Good Wishes Vicky Hibberd, Editor

13 CHURCH NEWS

Is prayer really effective you may ask. Well a survey taken in the U.K. Life is Fragile discovered, when questioned; “Do people pray”; over 60% said they do! Handle with Prayer

Prayer dispels the darkness and brings hope to our lives. It takes the place of thoughts that lie too deep for tears. When we pray it increases our faith in a loving heavenly Father whatever happens. Take for example the hymn ‘ABIDE WITH ME’, it is a prayer in itself. It was written by the Rev’d H.F. Lyte, in 1847, who at the age of 54 was dying of tuberculosis. He had to give up his Chris- tian ministry during an icy winter to seek a warmer climate in Nice where he died two months later. It is a hymn we turn to in time of doubt and perplexity and when a shadow is cast over our lives (Sung even at great sporting occasions!). Only too well you will remember some of the words; “I need thy presence every passing hour….. What but thy grace can foil the tempter’s power…. Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be…. Through cloud and sunshine, O abide with me.” In prayer we have the assurance that God is with us in life and in death. He may not answer in a way we would expect, and yet we continue to trust that ultimately His love is there for us. Jesus taught His followers to talk to God in the same way that a child speaks to an adoring Father, Mark 14v36. Therefore when we pray the presence of God the Father is very much with us. In prayer we are seeking to come close to the maker and shaper of this world’s destiny. Those who take prayer to heart do not see it simply as a series of requests that God will change the world in the way they want. Nevertheless we should pray for those who are in need in mind, body and spirit and also for ourselves. Prayer can involve words, silence, reading, responding to art, listening to music and also hav- ing a ‘Quiet Time’ in the morning or being on a walk and thanking God for his creation. There are so many ways to be in contact with God. It is well known that we should look for answers to our prayers in a change to our attitudes and actions and it is a real joy when we recognise a result to be a miraculous intervention by God. But despite that, God undoubtedly responds in some mysterious way, to all kinds of prayer; even the desperate cry in an emergency! Finally, prayer is many things to very many different people. Essentially it is a journey into ‘THE HEART OF GOD’ where we find the source of our being, creatd as children of a loving heaven- ly Father who longs for us to make contact with Him day by day. Prayerfully Yours Geoff

FRITWELL NEWS The Chapel at Fritwell

Not many villages can boast at having a chapel in their village as so many are hav- ing to close through lack of support. I am pleased to say we are not in that situation at the moment as our congregation is on the increase. We would appreciate a bit more support from the local residents, and there is one way you could help as you do your spring cleaning and sorting out your cup- boards. Send any spare items to our great annual event of coffee morning and stalls one of the oldest village annual events cele- brating 127 years as a thriving activity. Doreen on 346484 or Don on 346674 would be pleased to collect. See poster p22.

As this goes to print we are looking forward to our Easter celebrations when our lord gave so much love to us and we are looking forward to a great time together as we meet to share his love and to give thanks for all he has given which is everything we have on this earth.
