The Garden Designs of William Stukeley (1687–1765)
2-4 GS Reeve + RS CORR NEW_baj gs 4/9/13 10:02 PM Page 9 The BRITISH ART Journal Volume XIII, No. 3 Of Druids, the Gothic, and the origins of architecture The garden designs of William Stukeley (1687–1765) Matthew M Reeve illiam Stukeley’s central place in the historiogra- phy of eighteenth-century England is hardly Winsecure.1 His published interpretations of the megalithic monuments at Avebury (1743) and Stonehenge (1740) earned him a prominent position in the history of archaeology, and his Vetusta Monumenta ensured his rep- utation as a draughtsman and antiquarian. Recent research has shown that Stukeley was a polymath, whose related interests in astrology, Newtonian natural history and theol- ogy formed part of a broader Enlightenment world view.2 Yet, in the lengthy scholarship on Stukeley, insufficient attention has been paid to his interest in another intellectu- al and aesthetic pursuit of eighteenth-century cognoscenti: garden design.3 Stukeley’s voluminous manuscripts attest to his role as an avid designer of gardens, landscapes and garden build- ings. His own homes were the subjects of his most interesting achievements, including his hermitages at Kentish Town (1760), Stamford (Barnhill, 1744 and Austin Street 1737), and Grantham (1727).4 In this, Stukeley can be located among a number of ‘gentleman gardeners’ in the first half of the eighteenth century from the middling classes and the aristocracy.5 He toured gardens regularly, and recorded many of them in his books, journals and cor- respondence. His 1724 Itinerarium Curiosum recounts his impressions of gardens, including the recent work at Blenheim Palace and the ‘ha-ha’ in particular, and his unpublished notebooks contain a number of sketches such as the gardens at Grimsthorpe, Lincs., where he was a reg- ular visitor.6 Stukeley also designed a handful of garden buildings, apparently as gifts for friends and acquaintances. -

The Architecture of Joseph Michael Gandy (1771-1843) and Sir John Soane (1753-1837): An Exploration Into the Masonic and Occult Imagination of the Late Enlightenment Abstract In examining select works of English architects Joseph Michael Gandy and Sir John Soane, this dissertation is intended to bring to light several important parallels between architectural theory and freemasonry during the late Enlightenment. Both architects developed architectural theories regarding the universal origins of architecture in an attempt to establish order as well as transcend the emerging historicism of the early nineteenth century. There are strong parallels between Soane's use of architectural narrative and his discussion of architectural 'model' in relation to Gandy's understanding of 'trans-historical' architecture. The primary textual sources discussed in this thesis include Soane's Lectures on Architecture, delivered at the Royal Academy from 1809 to 1836, and Gandy's unpublished treatise entitled the Art, Philosophy, and Science of Architecture, circa 1826. -

Imprinted at London by J.G. for Robert Boydell, and are to be sold at his Shop in the Bulwarke neer the Tower, 1650 £1500 Small 4to. pp. [vii]+56+[iv]+139. Removed from a volume of tracts bound in the eighteenth century for the Macclesfield Library with characteristically cropped inscription, running titles, catchwords and page numbers, and shaving three words of the text on H4r. Ink smudge to second title page verso, manuscript algebraic solution on 2Q3 illustrated below, Macclesfield armorial blindstamp, clean and crisp. First edition, one of two issues published in the same year (the other spelling “Practical” in the title). William Jones (1675-1749) was employed by the second Earl of Macclesfield at Shirburn Castle as his mathematics instructor, and at his death left his pupil and patron the most valuable mathematical library in England, which included Newton manuscript material. Jones was an important promoter of Isaac Newton’s work, as well as being a friend: William Stukeley (see item 6), in the first biography of Newton, describes visiting him “sometime with Dr. -

Introduction The Denkard is a ninth century encyclopedia of Zoroastrianism, but with extensive quotations from materials thousands of years older, including (otherwise) lost Avestan texts. It is the single most valuable source of information on the Zoroastrian religion aside from the Avesta itself. It was edited by Ādurbād Ēmēdān. The work of publishing a complete edition of the Pahlavi text, with translations into Gujarati and English, was undertaken by Dastur Peshotanji Behramji Sanjana (1828-98), and completed by his son Darab Dastur Peshotan Sanjana (1857-1931). Both were prominent Zoroastrian head-priests, and among the best Pahlavi authorities of their time. Unfortunately, this masterpiece has been largely neglected. Copies of it are extremely rare, fragile, and voluminous, running to nineteen volumes. In making this edition available to a wider audience, I have confined it to the English translations, and frequent valuable footnotes. I have taken the liberty to normalized the spelling in this edition, in order to be consistent with other documents in this series, and to facilitate searches. Wherever possible I have used the spellings of F.M. Kotwal and J. Boyd, A Guide to the Zoroastrian Religion, Scholars Press, 1982. Comments set in {}, or marked “-JHP” have been added by me, mainly to facilitate searches. Contents Propitiation of the Creator through faith in the Revelation – Heading of the Sixth Book. SQUARE PEGGES AND ROUND ROBINS: SOME MID-EIGHTEENTH CENTURY NUMISMATIC DISPUTES H.E. MANVILLE BRITISH Numismatics as a science may fairly be said to have come of age in the mid-eighteenth century with early discussions among antiquarians groping toward solu- tions to some of the more vexatious questions: Who struck the ancient British coins dug up throughout southern England and what was the meaning of the brief inscriptions on some of them? Did the Anglo-Saxons coin any gold? Where were the coins of Richard I and King John? How could one differentiate the coins of William I and II; Henry II and III; Edwards I to III; and Henry IV to the early issue of Henry VII? The debates over these and other problems ranged well into the next century but gradually the path toward historical solutions grew clearer - although not without false turns and dead ends. We shall take a brief look at two of these questions and another that sprang full-blown from a flan split on a single coin and the over-fertile imagination of several mid-century antiquaries. Numismatic studies in the first quarter of the eighteenth century attempted to sort out some of the earliest English issues, as in the Numismata Anglo-Saxonica et Anglo-Danica illustrata of Sir Andrew Fountaine, printed in the Thesaurus of Dr George Hickes in 1705;1 and in Notae in Anglo-Saxonum nummos, published anonymously by Edward Thwaites in 1708.2 A chapter in Ducatus Leodiensis by Ralph Thoresby, first published in 1715, discussed coins in his private collection and was frequently referred to by other writers.3 With the Historical Account of English Money by Stephen Martin Leake, first published anonymously in 1726, a handbook solely on the coins from the Conquest became available.4 Although its original eight octavo plates illustrate fewer than seventy coins to the Restoration, Leake's work lasted through the century - later editions of 1745 and 1793 bringing it up-to-date and including additional plates. -

Historical Influence of the Rosicrucian Fraternity on Freemasonry Introduction Freemasonry has a public image that sometimes includes notions that we practice some sort of occultism, alchemy, magic rituals, that sort of thing. As Masons we know that we do no such thing. Since 1717 we have been a modern, rational, scientifically minded craft, practicing moral and theological virtues. But there is a background of occult science in Freemasonry, and it is related to the secret fraternity of the Rosicrucians. The Renaissance Heritage1 During the Italian renaissance of the 15th century, scholars rediscovered and translated classical texts of Plato, Pythagoras, and the Hermetic writings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, thought to be from ancient Egypt. Over the next two centuries there was a widespread growth in Europe of various magical and spiritual practices – magic, alchemy, astrology -- based on those texts. The mysticism and magic of Jewish Cabbala was also studied from texts brought from Spain and the Muslim world. All of these magical practices had a religious aspect, in the quest for knowledge of the divine order of the universe, and Man’s place in it. The Hermetic vision of Man was of a divine soul, akin to the angels, within a material, animal body. By the 16th century every royal court in Europe had its own astrologer and some patronized alchemical studies. In England, Queen Elizabeth had Dr. John Dee (1527- 1608) as one of her advisors and her court astrologer. Dee was also an alchemist, a student of the Hermetic writings, and a skilled mathematician. He was the most prominent practitioner of Cabbala and alchemy in 16th century England. -

It is not generally apprec- iated that he made major excursions into Kent and that in his pub- lished works, and many surviving papers, there are details of the prin- cipal Prehistoric, Roman and Mediaeval monuments of the County, as seen by him during the earlier years of the eighteenth century. Furthermore, his closest friends were John Gray, the Canterbury physician, and, from about 1721, Lord Winchelsea, of Eastwell Park. Two members of his antiquarian circle, Sir John Elwill and Sir Samuel Lennard, resided at Beckenham and West Wickham respect- ively, while another, Hercules Ayleway, wrote from 'Merriworth Castle'. Stukeley (Plate I) studied medicine at Cambridge and later in London, at St Thomas's Hospital. He spent seven years in practice in his native Lincolnshire, at Boston, returning to London in 1717. His countryside tours and antiquarian interests, led to the detailed appreciations of Stonehenge and Avebury, their supportive land- scapes and allied monuments, made between 1718 and 1724, for which he is justly famous. In 1717 he became the first Secretary of the Society of Antiquaries of London and wrote in the Minute-Book that 'Without drawing or designing the study of Antiquities or any other science is lame and imperfect'. -

Medical History, 1992, 36: 160-186. WILLIAM STUKELEY AND THE GOUT by KEVIN J. FRASER * Gout was an ubiquitous disease in Georgian England. Although its victims were often immobilized at home for weeks on end, it was not, however, entirely unwelcome. Predominately a male disease, because of its frequency in the corridors of power and association with extravagant lifestyles, it was perceived as socially desirable. Moreover, there was the belief that the gouty were protected from more life- threatening disorders such as palsy, dropsy or apoplexy. Physicians were therefore often reluctant to treat attacks ofacute gout. Such therapeutic nihilism was convenient as gout had been considered the opprobrium medicorum since ancient times and many were prepared to suffer their attacks obediently. Others continued to search for a cure, looking beyond a disturbance of the four bodily humours for the cause of the disease. Pamphleteers fed the huge public appetite for such information, and the diaries and letters ofthe period contain frequent references to gout. However, these accounts often leave some uncertainty about the diagnosis, as most other forms ofarthritis were yet to be distinguished from gout. William Stukeley's descriptions of his own gout are, therefore, of particular importance, for they leave no doubt about the diagnosis.' Not only do they provide * Kevin J. The following reasons make the theme relevant: 1. There is no iconographic canon Zurvanite mythologem which is universally accepted by modern Iranian studies; 2.Saratsk petroglyphic composition of XVIII-XVII centuries BC (Minusinsk Basin of Siberia) in Khakassia that we have defined as the earliest of all supposed images of Zurvanite myth; 3. The significance of Zurvanite myths in the process of monotheistic theology’s forming. In our work we have come to the conclusion that the creators of Saratsk petroglyphic composition were the bearers of the Andronovo cultural-historical community who came to the territory of Khakassia in XVIII-XVII centuries BC. In the processes of semantic disclosure of mythologem of the symbols of Saratsk petroglyphic composition due to the fact that Andronovs belonged to the circle of Aryan tribes confederation we relied on the text of the Avesta, Pahlavi texts and medieval authors mentioned in Zurvanite mythologem. -
