Annual Report The mission of the American Theological Library Association is to foster the study of theology and religion by enhancing the development of theological and religious studies libraries and librarianship. Board of Directors The ATLA Board of Directors consists of twelve directors, organized in three classes of four directors each. Four directors are elected by the membership of the Association each year. The board elects, from among it’s number, three officers: the president, the vice president, and the secretary. Andrew J. Johnson to complete the term beginning October 22, 2012. 1 American Theological Library Association From the President Dear ATLA Colleagues, The American Theological Library Association (ATLA) is structured as a membership association, consisting of both institutional and personal members. For those who are individual members or work for an institutional member of ATLA, you are among the ownership of ATLA. There is no other group of shareholders or private equity partners that oversee ATLA — it is just us members! From the general membership, twelve persons are elected to represent the interests of the entire membership on the Board of Directors. A focus of our work this past year has been ATLA membership, especially as the “moral owners" of the Association. The Board of Directors sponsored Andrew J. Keck a lunch at the Annual Conference where we could share ideas and concerns ATLA Board President 2012-13 about our profession. We heard much about the importance of management and leadership among skills needed for the librarian of the future. Digital publishing and changes to theological education were described as critical opportunities in our theological libraries. Finally, librarians identified information-seeking skills and collections of e-resources as among the emerging research needs of our library users. All of the conversation and data gathered has provided helpful insights as we continue to imagine the future of ATLA. As Brenda Bailey-Hainer joined us as the Executive Director in December 2011, the Board has rightly focused some time and energy into establishing a proper governing relationship. In the past year, we have completed several ongoing efforts to improve our board governance through: providing governance training to every new board member; systematically revising and updating our board documents and policy manual; establishing a new pattern of monitoring reports on our organizational effectiveness and health; adding a third Board meeting to ensure proper oversight and governance; restating our Organizational Ends as outcomes; and selecting McGladrey as our new audit firm. While not particularly “flashy” work, the Board has developed a strong foundation for effective governance. Finally, the Board acknowledged two significant losses in our work together over the past year: our Board member, André Paris, and our former Executive Director, Dennis Norlin.     HURON UNIVERSITY COLLEGE HIST 3801E: The Historian's Craft 2019-20 Dr. Amy Bell [email protected] Office V130 Office hours: Thursdays 9:30-11:15 or by appt. Class meets: Tuesdays 8:30-10:30 and Thursdays 8:30-9:30 in HUC W106 Introduction: Truth, Archives and Phantoms History 3801E is a seminar course that tries to answer two questions: what is History, and why does it matter? As one of the few required courses in your History module at Huron, The Historian’s Craft is a capstone in your career as a History student, but it also asks you to question and evaluate the way you understand other aspects of your undergraduate work, and your experience outside the boundaries of academic study. Who creates knowledge? How is it used or misused? What is true, how do we know, and what do we do in the face of the limits of knowledge? What gets left out of our accounts of the past, and how do we recognize these phantoms haunting the present? Most History students go on to pursue careers outside the ranks of academic historians, so while the course is concerned with historical method, it is also much broader in its application. We will work in a practical way with the materials of History, and will consider the sea-changes of postmodernism, new studies in Public History, and cultural studies of historical memory. The course also considers the place of History in the emerging field of the digital humanities, and gives you experience in that field. Class Field Work and Community-based Research Project The centerpiece of 3801E is a community-based and experiential research project that brings together the theoretical and practical aspects of the course material.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course covers the historical, theological, spiritual, cultural and institutional developments which have characterized religious experience in the United States from the Colonial period to the present. COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Students will learn to think critically about the key theological ideas, major movements and influential personalities that shaped the Church in America. They will acquire the ability to analyze theological arguments, and coherently articulate the meaning of the Christian faith in the context of its historical development in North America. They will understand how global historical and theological developments influenced the plethora of Christian expressions in America. By closely examining the religious and cultural experiences of different racial and ethnic groups in America through the past centuries, students will gain greater understanding and appreciation of the way the triune God works on creating and sustaining the Kingdom among them. 2. Students will develop knowledge and understanding of church history as a discipline which uses methods of historical research, inquiry, and critical evaluation. Students will gain awareness of key original source documents in each century that will be covered, and increase their skills of critically examining and interacting with these historical sources.

Its primary audience is theological students and pastors, though scholars read it as well. It was formerly a print journal operated by RTSF/UCCF in the UK, and it became a digital journal operated by The Gospel Coalition in 2008. The new editorial team seeks to preserve representation, in both essayists and reviewers, from both sides of the Atlantic.
