ATLA’s mission continues, providing benefits to a growing membership, exposure and royalties to religious and theological publishers, and excellent research tools to meet the needs of libraries, librarians, scholars, students, and religious leaders. Annual Report The mission of the American Theological Library Association is to foster the study of theology and religion by enhancing the development of theological and religious studies libraries and librarianship. Board of Directors The ATLA Board of Directors consists of twelve directors, organized in three classes of four directors each. Four directors are elected by the membership of the Association each year. The board elects, from among it’s number, three officers: the president, the vice president, and the secretary. Andrew J. Johnson to complete the term beginning October 22, 2012. 1 American Theological Library Association From the President Dear ATLA Colleagues, The American Theological Library Association (ATLA) is structured as a membership association, consisting of both institutional and personal members. For those who are individual members or work for an institutional member of ATLA, you are among the ownership of ATLA. There is no other group of shareholders or private equity partners that oversee ATLA — it is just us members! From the general membership, twelve persons are elected to represent the interests of the entire membership on the Board of Directors. A focus of our work this past year has been ATLA membership, especially as the “moral owners" of the Association. The Board of Directors sponsored Andrew J. Keck a lunch at the Annual Conference where we could share ideas and concerns ATLA Board President 2012-13 about our profession. We heard much about the importance of management and leadership among skills needed for the librarian of the future. Digital publishing and changes to theological education were described as critical opportunities in our theological libraries. Finally, librarians identified information-seeking skills and collections of e-resources as among the emerging research needs of our library users. All of the conversation and data gathered has provided helpful insights as we continue to imagine the future of ATLA. As Brenda Bailey-Hainer joined us as the Executive Director in December 2011, the Board has rightly focused some time and energy into establishing a proper governing relationship. In the past year, we have completed several ongoing efforts to improve our board governance through: providing governance training to every new board member; systematically revising and updating our board documents and policy manual; establishing a new pattern of monitoring reports on our organizational effectiveness and health; adding a third Board meeting to ensure proper oversight and governance; restating our Organizational Ends as outcomes; and selecting McGladrey as our new audit firm. While not particularly “flashy” work, the Board has developed a strong foundation for effective governance. Finally, the Board acknowledged two significant losses in our work together over the past year: our Board member, André Paris, and our former Executive Director, Dennis Norlin. Both were significant advocates for and
