Extended Abstract Introduction In the view of Nietzsche, the genealogy is the sight on the nature of the world as a historical existence. He believes that all phenomena are formed in the history and does not have a predefined definition and fixed and immutable meaning. Foucault being affected by Nietzsche's thoughts and instead of considering the roots and origins of events speaks about manifests and ancestries. Because he believes that what we're talking about it in fact is language and we speak within language, initially in archeology and genealogy, then, to understand phenomena in the language we should focus on focusing on discourse in archeology and follow by adding of non- discursive factors on in genealogy. Foucault's genealogical perspective shows how power relationships connect the material and discursive origins together. This way, the method of genealogy, pay special attention to the relationship among power, knowledge, procedures and space. In a genealogical perspective, if we believe that the discourses, make our live every day, can be accepted that discourse and non-discursive factors in each course shape the geographical space and its content. Accordingly, the future of phenomena as well as past and present are the resultant discourses and non-discursive factors, and by focusing on the present discourse (which encompass the phenomenon under study), relative conception of discourse of future and then the future of phenomenon under study can be obtained. Materials and Methods This research at first defines geographical space as relational space. Then we reviews the genealogy and its related concepts, particularly discourse and power, position of genealogy in future study according to two casual layered analysis (CLA) and future study approach and then Downloaded from journals.hsu.ac.ir at 10:21 +0330 on Saturday October 2nd 2021 genealogical future studies introduces and explains the relative processes. And finally explains the relationship among time, space and discourse on geographical research. Discussion and Results If the geographic space, relational space, and scenes of creature of discourses and relations of power and knowledge are considered, then, we face the object and subject of a discourse (the subject and object within discourses), and forming, deforming and evolution of phenomena emerging and the way of formulation of power relations among them. So to study the phenomenon in the geographical space must be studied within the discourse and taking into account the affecting power relations, in order to gain an understanding of future, the current trends of rooted of present discourses, the images of future discourses and the conditions that respond to the challenges of discourses which are the resultant of the recognition of past discourses should be recognized. This approach, which uses genealogy in research related to future, can be called “genealogical Futures Studies”. Genealogical future studies is the systematic methodology framework that by genealogical observation to the phenomena of geographical space, the past and present as well as future, know the result of discourses and non-discursive factors (particularly power) that act within the specific time and place and nature of the phenomenon (political, social, economic phenomena, etc.) and form the behavioral logic forms. So that by understanding dominate and resistance discourse (s) and power relations as Arid Regions Geography Studies; Volume 6; Number 22; Winter 2015 well as the transformation period (the stage where the discourse is located), can understand the factors shaping the future and plan for the future study methods. Since the unit of analysis in genealogy is a discourse and power relation shaping discourse, and knowledge and power acting in the inter-discourse, and in this process we go from the present to the past, in the genealogical future study, it must return to the past. Since that, the present converts to the future past, so by recognizing the present and past discourses and identifying the driving forces in format of dominant discourses, we can move forward by identifying the future influenced by the discourse and future discourse which are the results of discourse and even more over. Conclusions It is suggested that, in geographical research related to the future, more than methods (qualitative or quantitative) which are used with the aims every research, genealogical futures studies in understanding future trend were used. Maybe it can help a more comprehensive understanding of phenomena behavior in possibly future discourses and can give a more realistic vision of future to the futurists. Analytic philosophy has historically responded antagonistically to the suggestion that looking to our past for answers is valuable. Yet some philosophers argue that the search for the origins of our philosophical outlook can be a source of great (meta-)philosophical insight. One such strand are the so-called genealogists. The purpose of this thesis is to understand what the promise of philosophical genealogy is, and whether it can be fulfilled. A challenge for my project is that the term ‘genealogy’ has been used to describe very different kinds of things (Section I). Less elliptically formulated, it would read as follows: please explain why you, a professor in philosophy, have published over the years so many pages in which you kept referring to the work of someone who has authored a series of historical works on topics which, at first sight, have hardly any bearing on the discipline which your institution pays you to do research in. Whence this attraction to studies on madness, crime or sexuality? Wasn’t one book enough to make you realize that however enticing a reading such works may be, they bring little, if anything, for philosophy as such? I imagine my inquisitor wouldn’t rest if I were to point out to him that he seems badly informed and apparently unaware of the fact that Foucault by now has come to be accepted as an obvious part of the philosophical canon for the past century. Should I manage to convince him to take up a few of the books presenting his thought to philosophers, he would no doubt retort that what he had been reading mainly consisted of summaries of the aforementioned histories, and for the rest of exactly the kind of arguments that gave rise to his suspicion: accusations of nihilism, relativism, self-contradiction, critique without standards… And worse, if I were honest, I would have to agree that for all the fascination that it exerted on us philosophers, Foucault’s work also put us before a deep, and by now familiar embarrassment.

Sex was not an effect of a cultural system for Foucault, but an apparatus of biopower that emerged in the eighteenth century for the administration of life. Butler, however, is interested in uncovering how something we call or identify as gender manifests itself in different times and contexts, rather than asking what relations of power made necessary the emergence of gender as a discourse. After examining the theoretical configurations underpinning Butler’s engagement with Foucault’s Herculine Barbin, I suggest a more biopolitically informed reading of how the material body becomes captured by the discourses of sexuality and sex. Finally, the article sets out preliminary questions with which a more strictly Foucauldian genealogy of gender might be conducted.     Journal of Italian Philosophy, Volume 1 (2018) Archaeology and/or Genealogy: Agamben’s Transformation of Foucauldian Method Stephen Howard Attentive readers of Giorgio Agamben’s Homo Sacer project will no doubt have noticed Agamben’s vacillating descriptions of his philosophical method as ‘archaeology’ or ‘genealogy’. These terms derive most clearly from Michel Foucault, a fact that Agamben underlines by regularly situating the Homo Sacer project in relation to the French thinker, as development or completion of Foucault’s work on governmentality, power and biopolitics (1998, p.3–7; 2011, xi– xiii). However, despite employing Foucault’s terms, Agamben furnishes ‘archaeology’ and ‘genealogy’ with meanings which deviate significantly from Foucault’s use. We will here return to Foucault’s use of these terms to describe his method in distinct periods of his work, in order to illuminate the singular way that Agamben develops the archaeological and genealogical methodologies. I exemplify Agamben’s approach through one of the later, more political-theological contributions to the Homo Sacer series, with the aim of helping to clarify the place that these apparently esoteric works occupy in the series’ general political project. Finally, I show that Walter Benjamin is the key figure in the constellation informing Agamben’s archaeological-genealogical approach and examine the philosophical consequences of Agamben’s transformation of Foucault’s methods. 1. Abstract This paper offers a theory of genealogy, explaining its rise in the nineteenth century, its epistemic commitments, its nature as critique, and its place in the work of Nietzsche and Foucault. The crux of the theory is recognition of genealogy as an expression of a radical historicism, rejecting both appeals to transcendental truths and principles of unity or progress in history, and embracing nominalism, contingency, and contestability. In this view, genealogies are committed to the truth of radical historicism and, perhaps more provisionally, the truth of their own empirical content. Since publishing the first Green Paper in 1999, the proposed reforms have received major criticisms from virtually all 'stakeholders' in mental health care. This PhD offers a genealogy of (bio)political action during the process of reforming the Act. The focus is on the period from August 2002 to September 2003, with particular reference to the activities of self proclaimed 'service users' and 'survivors' in two independent protest groups: 'NO Force' and . Protest Against the Bill'. The methodological premise (chapters two and three) is born from something of a lacuna in post-Foucauldian governmentality studies which, although well posited, offer little in the way of advancing a genealogy of governmental contestation. My focus is twofold. Firstly, by advancing a (post)Foucauldian understanding of resistance - which, with respect to power, 'always comes first' (Deleuze 1988) - I aim to develop the relationship between 'biosociality' or 'life politics' (Rabinow 1996, Rose 200 I) and mental health law.

Synopsis Genealogy is a historical perspective and investigative method, which offers an intrinsic critique of the present. It provides people with the critical skills for analysing and uncovering the relationship between knowledge, power and the human subject in modern society and the conceptual tools to understand how their being has been shaped by historical forces. Genealogy works on the limits of what people think is possible, not only exposing those limits and confines but also revealing the spaces of freedom people can yet experience and the changes that can still be made (Foucault 1988). Genealogy as method derives from German philosophy, particularly the works of Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900), but is most closely associated with French academic Michel Foucault (1926-24).
