FARRINGTON HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA, JUNIOR ORCHESTRA FALL REGISTRATION PACKET 2017 DR. KAREN MIYAMOTO, INSTRUCTOR [email protected] Program Dates: Programs Start the week of 8/7/17 and ends the week ending 5/21/18. Program Information: 1. Farrington High School is offering High School & Junior Orchestra--Beginning Orchestra and Intermediate & Advanced Orchestra for the 2016-17 School Year. 2. The program will be taught by Dr. Karen Miyamoto (Farrington High School) and Mr. Micah Masuno (Puuhale Elementary School) & other volunteer assistants. 3. Beginning Orchestra is a class geared for students entering Grades 1-12 with little or no playing experience. Attendance at all classes and performances is required. Students will learn to play a String Instrument (Violin, Viola, Cello, or Double Bass). Any interested student may join. Course objectives are to learn their instrument history, posture, hand position, stick & bow position, parts of the instrument, music reading, and simple repertoire consisting of a varied repertoire of music. Instruments will be provided as inventory allows. [Meets Mondays and Fridays from 5-6 P.M. Starting 8/10/17 in the FHS Orchestra Room; Ford Hall Room 2] 4. Intermediate & Advanced Orchestra is a class geared for students entering Grades 1-12 with playing experience. Students should be able to play the D Major Scale and read music notation playing on an instrument. This class will further the playing skills and will entail playing a varied genre of music with increased levels of difficulty. Instruments will be provided as inventory allows. [Meets Mondays and Fridays from 3-5 P.M. and Thursdays from 2:15-3:45 P.M. Starting 8/7/17 in the FHS Orchestra Room; Ford Hall Room 2] 5. All Participants are required to purchase the Orchestra Uniform (same as the previous year Black Formals). 6. The classes are FREE of charge. All registrants are highly encouraged to make a donation and join the Orchestra Booster Club. Booster Club donations will enable the Orchestra Programs to continue. 7. Program Requirements: (All Payments are Non-Refundable) 1. Signed and completed “Contract & Registration Forms.” 2. Optional, but Highly Recommended Booster Club Membership and Donation. 3. Purchase of the Orchestra Uniform—Black Formal Attire. Students must purchase on their own: Black, covered dress shoes (no sports shoes), Black Dress Sandals (Girls & Ladies), Black calf-length socks (if wearing pants), or Nude stockings (if wearing dress). No White or Colored Socks. 4. All payments are Non-Refundable. 5. Learning to play an instrument requires regular and consistent attendance at all classes and attendance at the performance(s). Failure to attend class may result in being dismissed from the program(s) and/or being ineligible to perform. 6. Students with chronic excused absences may be dismissed if the class attendance is less than 60%. Please contact Dr. Miyamoto if you have any urgent family emergencies. Attendance is important! 7. All students should bring a Music 2” Black ring binder (with sheet protectors) and a pencil to each class meeting. 8. In order to ensure student safety and well-being, all students must be picked up promptly or leave campus after classes. Students left waiting for longer than 15 minutes following the classes on 3 occasions will be dismissed from the program. (Please call if there is an emergency). 9. Please send a note, email, or leave a phone message in advance if your child will be absent from class. (Email is best.) 10. Orchestral instruments are available for class use (as inventory allows, first-come, first-served basis). 11. Students may also purchase their own instruments (see attachment). 12. Success in School: Students with coursework in music performance and music appreciation scored higher on the SAT: 53 points higher on the verbal and 39 points higher on the math for music performance, and 61 points higher on the verbal and 42 points higher on the math for music appreciation than students with no arts participation. 2. Success in Developing Intelligence: A research team exploring the link between music and intelligence reported that music training is far superior to computer instruction in dramatically enhancing children’s abstract reasoning skills, the skills necessary for learning math and science. 3. Success in Society: The College Board identifies the arts as one of the six basic academic subject areas students should study in order to succeed in college. 4. Success in Life: Music is about communication, creativity, and cooperation, and, by studying music in school, students have the opportunity to build on these skills, enrich their lives, and experience the world from a new perspective. 5. Musical Experience: Music is a worthwhile endeavor in and of itself. It allows for self-expression, appreciation of aesthetic beauty, and a life-long skill for personal enjoyment. Awards: Awards will be presented at the end of the year for the following categories: 1. Attendance Award (Attended all rehearsals & performances) 2. Certificate of Participation for all students. 3. Music Booster Club Member recognition award. Instruments may be borrowed and taken home if there are a sufficient number of instruments. Students are encouraged to purchase their own instrument if they are certain that instrument is a suitable and desirable choice. The cost of private lessons are anywhere from $10-$35 per half hour for a private lesson once a week. The cost varies per instructor. Orchestra Booster Club: Each Orchestra Student may become a member of the Orchestra Booster Club by contributing $10 or more. The Booster Club helps to support Orchestra program expenses such as repair and maintenance, purchase of new instruments, music, clinics & clinicians, travel expenses, and more. Booster club members will receive special recognition in the Concert Programs and will receive special recognition at the Awards Concert. Golden Circle Music Booster Club Members are those who contribute more than $11-49. Presidential Music Booster Club Members contribute $50-99. Honorary Music Booster Club Members Contribute $100 or more. (Thank you!)
