TCulture in all its ramications is essentially man made. It is socially acquired phenomenon which is intrinsically value laden, adaptive and highly sensitive to the environment within which it evolves. Peace, political and economy stability is what every society craved for, but in man's attempt to come to terms with realities of life in order to make ends meet, violence and struggle became inevitable. In addressing these tripartite of challenges, culture being a way of life of the people and their responses to their challenges became imperative in solving our avoidable challenges as a nation. In achieving this, the paper examined the role of culture as a tool for peace, political and economy sustainability in Nigeria. To this end, an exploration of the denitions and concept culture cum cultural administration in pre-literate Nigerian society were looked into in order to inspire the present and to embolden the future. The paper therefore, made an appeal to all and sundry to go back to our roots, to identify and uphold our cultural values, norms and tradition in face technology and globalization noting that the reason Nigeria economy, peace and political stability has not actually collapsed is simply because of the strength and resilience in our culture. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Language is the most important information and communication characteristics of all the human beings. Language is power as well as a great instrument for cultural preservation. The world community is made up of many languages and each of these languages is being used to identify one speech community or race. Unfortunately, it has been observed that Igbo language is fast deteriorating as a means of communication among the Igbo. The Igbo have embraced foreign languages in place of their mother tongue (Igbo language). This paper is therefore aimed at highlighting the importance of Igbo language as a major form of Igbo identity. This study will immensely benefit students, researchers and Igbo society in general. A framework was formulated to direct research effort on the development and study of Igbo language, the relationship between Igbo language and culture, the importance of Igbo language as a major form of Igbo identity, the place of Igbo language in the minds of the present Igbo and factors militating against the growth of the language and finally recommendations were given. Keywords: Language, Identity, Culture, Communication, Speech Communication Introduction Language is the most important information and communication characteristics of all human beings. Language is power as well as great weapon for cultural preservation. Only humans have spoken and written languages, and language is the key note of culture because without it, culture does not exist. It is the medium of language that conveys the socio-political, economic and religious thoughts from individual to individual, and from generation to generation. -

Vol. 7, No. 1, 2019, pp. 1-8. doi: 10.11648/j.ijla.20190701.11 Received : September 19, 2018; Accepted : October 17, 2018; Published : March 11, 2019 Abstract: The Igbo traditional concept of “Ohaka: The Community is Supreme,” is mostly expressed in Igbo names like; Nwoha/Nwora (Community-Owned Child), Oranekwulu/Ohanekwulu (Community Intercedes/intervenes), Obiora/Obioha (Community-Owned Son), Adaora/Adaoha (Community-Owned Daughter) etc. This indicates value attached to Ora/Oha (Community) in Igbo culture. Musical studies have shown that the Igbo musical artiste does not exist in isolation; rather, he performs in/for his community and is guided by the norms and values of his culture. Most Igbo musicological scholars affirm that some of his works require the community as co-performers while some require collaboration with some gifted members of his community. His musical instruments are approved and often times constructed by members of his community as well as his costumes and other paraphernalia. But in recent times, modernity has not been so friendly to this “Ohaka” concept; hence the promotion of individuality/individualism concepts in various guises within the context of Igbo musical arts performance. -

This has impacted negatively on investment in the sector and overall economic development. The study therefore assessed patronage of tourist centres in Badagry Local Government area (LGA) of Lagos State. Nigeria. The study was based on primary data obtained in a cross-sectional survey of 240 respondents using multi-stage sampling technique in selected tourist centres in the LGA. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results revealed that majority of the respondents were between 26-30 years of age with an average of 36.2 years. Majority (62.1%) of the respondents were females, 71.1 percent were single and 41.7 percent had tertiary education. Furthermore, majority (60.8%) of the respondents had between 4-6 individuals as household members. The most visited tourist centre recreation purpose (62.1%), education purpose (87.1%), research purpose (84.2%), information purpose (72.1%) and sightseeing which accounted for 57.9%. -

ABUTU (Mrs) Department of Tourism, School of Technology, Federal Polytechnic, P.M.B.1037, Idah, Kogi State,Nigeria ABSTRACT Tourism has become a driving force in the improvement of global economies and a substantial contributor to the world revenue. The main justification for tourism development across the countries of the world generally focuses on its potential for positive economic impacts. The UNWTO annual Report of 2012 indicated that tourism generates 5% of direct global GDP, 235 million jobs worldwide, 30% of the world export of services, 980 million international Tourists in 2011, and 103 billion US Dollars generated by tourists. And by the 2013 annual report, the industry had achieved an historical milestone, in which one billion people travelled in a single year of 2012. Hence, it is heralded as the world largest industry. Nigeria can no longer afford to be left out. It is on this note that this paper examined the tourism industry and its impacts at the global level, the Nigerian tourism and the numerous tourism resources therein. The challenges confronting the sector were identified, such as lack of adequate infrastructure, insecurity among others and it was also recommended that for the sector to be alive to its responsibility the issue of insecurity and infrastructural decadence among others must be addressed. -

Department of history and strategic studies Federal university ndufu-alike, ikwo, ebonyi state Abstract This paper considers the symbolism of kolanut according to Igbo worldview. How kolanut helps to shape the people‘s philosophical ideology especially, in relation to religion. The roles of kolanut within the Igbo socio-cultural context and the values attached to these roles will be examined. The roles of kolanut as a means of socialization, education and transmission of cultural values from the preceding to succeeding generations will come under consideration. Equally, this paper looks at the traditional rules regarding not only the uses but more essentially the mode of kolanut presentation, blessing, breaking and sharing of kolanut. How these rules and kolanut have persisted in the face of social and cultural changes which have affected the Igbo people shall be reviewed. The roles played by kolanut in Igbo religion will come under study, this is to correct some of the misconceptions by writers who are motivated by Eurocentric idealism but quite oblivious of the Igbo cultural setting and the place of kolanut in it. The onslaught of Western civilization causing the change of attitude among the young generation towards kolanut as a vital aspect of our culture tends to pose a threat to the future and survival of kolanut. -

Seeing this, this research work was organized and designed on the ground that it seeks to establish the fact that all human is one, created by one Supreme Being (God), with diverse functions and areas of specialization. With this, it is in the interest of this work that with this mind set of oneness, harmony as well as love, Osu caste system and its intrinsic problems will be solved once and for all. Because with this mind set, each person will act or work based on his/her area of specification with the intention of ensuring excellence in his jurisdiction which will go along way in fostering peace, harmony, happiness as well as development in the society. “Burn the Mmonwu” Contradictions and Contestations in Masquerade Perfor- mance in Uga, Anambra State in Southeastern Nigeria Charles Gore asked performances organized by male asso- ciations are a distinctive feature of public per- ALL PHOTOS BY THE AUTHOR formance among Igbo-speaking peoples of southeastern Nigeria (Jones 1984, Cole and Ania- kor 1984) and have been the subject of attention by African art historians in the twentieth cen- tury (Ottenberg 1975, Aniakor 1978, Ugonna 1984, Henderson and MUmunna 1988, Bentor 1995). Innovation and change in terms of iconography, ritual, and dramatic presentation have always been important components to these performances, as well as flexible adaptations and responses to changing social circumstances (Figs. 1–3). However, in the last two decades, new mass movements of Christian evangelism and Pentecostalism have emerged, success- fully exhorting their members to reject masquerade as a pagan practice. During this time, in many places in southeastern Nige- ria, famous and long-standing masquerade associations have dis- banded and their masks and costumes burnt as testimonies to the efficacy of Pentecostalism, affirming the successful conversion of former masquerade members. This research examines the chal- lenges that changing localized circumstances pose to masquerade practice in one locale in southeastern Nigeria. Uga1 is located in southeastern Nigeria in Aguata Local Gov- ernment Area (LGA) in Anambra state, along the Nnewi-Okigwe expressway in Nigeria, some 40 km (25 mi.) eastwards from Onitsha on the river Niger (Fig. 4). It consisted until recently of four village units—Umueze, Awarasi, Umuoru, and Oka—spa- tially contiguous with each other and has a population of some 20,000 individuals. -

The traditional Igbo society was not a literate one. We had our culture, traditions and music before the coming of the early missionaries. In the olden days, Igbo people did not derive entertainment from books rather they developed and derived joy from imaginations through oral narratives including traditional (folk) music and dance. According to Emenyonu (1978), Igbo oral tradition or folklore (oral performance) is the foundation of the traditional Igbo music and they include folksongs, folktales, proverbs, prayers including incantations, histories, legends, myths, drama, oratory and festivals. In Africa generally, music plays an important part in the lives of the people and one of the major characteristics of African music is that it has function. The various stages of the life-cycle of an individual and the life-cycles of the society are all marked with music. Key words: Igbo folk music, culture, traditions, beliefs 1. Definition Folk music is the term used to designate the traditional music of a people in contrast to the so called popular music and the serious music of concert halls and opera houses.
