It is a wholly creative and energizing reality, self-consistent and undi- vided in its active power, for the Father makes all things through the Word and in the Holy Spirit, and in this way the unity of the holy Trinity is preserved. Accordingly, in the Church, one God is preached, one God who is above all things and through all things and in all things. God is above all things as Fa- ther, for he is principle and source; he is through all things through the Word; and he is in all things in the Holy Spirit. Preston Quintela will assume responsibilities as parochial vicar at St. Cecelia parish in Houston. Parochial vicars (assistant priests) typically serve for three years in their first assignment. That benchmark has been reached, and Fr. Preston will continue to serve the people of God in his new parish. A farewell reception will be held for Fr. Preston on Sunday, June 30 in the CLC, follow- ing the 5:30 p.m. Mass, which he will celebrate for the last time. Please join us in thank- ing Fr. Preston for his generous service to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish. And don’t wor- ry, the priest-seminarian basketball game will continue! Effective July 1, Fr. Alfonso Dat-Nhan Tran will join us at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. Fr. Al- fonso was ordained in 2012, and has served as parochial vicar at St. Martha’s in King- wood, and at Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral in Houston. Even though Fr. Alfonso speaks Vietnamese, his primary responsibility will be serving our English- and Spanish-speaking parishioners. Fr. Alfonso attended St. Mary Seminary in Houston. Sometime after his arrival, we will plan a reception of welcome for Fr. Alfonso. Effective August 17, Fr. Gregory Vi Tran, CRM will assume new duties that have been assigned to him by his religious order, the Congregation of the Mother of the Redeem- er (CRM). He will become pastor of not one, but two rural parishes in Missouri. Fr. Gregory has been at SEAS for two years, and has served the Vietnamese communi- ty with distinction. He has also been of service to the wider parish community. There will be a farewell reception for Fr. Gregory at a date to be announced later this sum- mer. Please continue to pray for Fr. Gregory and for a smooth transition to his new pas- toral responsibilities. Effective August 17, Fr. Mark Hoa Le, CRM will begin his service as a parochial vicar here at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish. Fr. Mark was born in Vietnam, and studied for the priesthood in the United States. He was ordained in 2009 and has served in parish- es in Beaumont, Fort Worth, and Port Arthur, Texas. His most recent assignment has been as pastor in rural Missouri. Fr. Mark speaks fluet Vietnamese and English, and, like Fr.     HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH Washington, DC December 1, 2019 We Need a Little Advent By David Pennington You likely know the song from Jerry Herman’s musical, Mame. Mame has lost her fortune in the Wall Street crash of 1929. The mood in the family is hopeless and Mame’s nephew, Patrick, strikes up the household in song with “We need a little Christmas/ right this very minute…it’s one week past Thanksgiving now.” The house is bedecked for Christmas, and all is merry and bright. Christmas creep was a thing, even in 1929 (or 1966 when the show premiered). This weekend, while the rest of the world is bedecked with lights and ornaments, with candles in the windows and carols at the spinet, the Church enters the season of Advent – a season whose name means “coming” and whose spirit invites us to hope, anticipate, and create a quiet space for God in our lives. Liturgically, the season has very little to do with Christmas. The predominant focus of Advent has to do with Christ’s second coming, not the first. There is no glimmer of Baby Jesus in the Scripture readings until December 17 and the Fourth (last) Sunday of Advent. Before then, we get Isaiah’s beautiful images of God’s holy mountain where lion lies down with sheep, where valleys are filled in and mountains made low, and the glory of God is revealed. This perfection is the fulfillment of God’s reign when Christ comes again in glory. But, we’re not there yet. We wait in quiet hope of that day and make space for God’s coming to us today in hopes of Christ’s return at the end of time.

Nouwen 1987, 2007 Notre Dame, Indiana, Ave Maria Press, 116 pp. (softcover) THE WORD ICON AS IT OCCURS IN THE SCRIPTURES The word icon is a transliteration of the Greek word εἰκὼν and is found in the New Testament, particularly in the letters of the apostle Paul. While most Roman Catholic and Protestant Christians are familiar with the biblical theme of Jesus as the Word of God made flesh (John 1:1-14), Orthodox Christians also celebrate the biblical theme of Jesus as the Icon or Image of God. The icons found in Orthodox Churches are a celebration of the fact that Jesus Christ is indeed the Word of God made flesh and that anyone who has seen Jesus has seen the Father (John 12:45 and 14:8-12). As the 7th Ecumenical Council held in the city of Nicea in 787AD proclaimed, icons are in color what the Scriptures are in words: witnesses to the incarnation, the fact that God has come among us as a person whom we can see, touch and hear. In fact, in the traditional language of the Church, icons are not simply painted but written and an iconographer is "one who writes icons." Below are listed four of the places that the word icon is found in the original Greek text of the New Testament.
