ACE 2020 Nolimits 2 Recreation Contest the Challenge

ACE 2020 NoLimits 2 Recreation Contest Introduction Video: https://youtu.be/kU_i7by-nHk Since we can’t be at any of the host parks this year, we thought it would be fun to see who could make the best NoLimits 2 recreation of a coaster from one of the host parks! This contest is open to all ACE Members who have NoLimits 2 (available on Steam or from www.nolimitscoaster.com). The Challenge Build the most accurate recreation of any of the coasters at the host parks. Your recreation will be judged next to a mounted POV of the original ride! Available coasters Hershey Park: Wild Mouse, Fahrenheit, Trailblazer, Storm Runner, Sooperdooperlooper, Wildcat, Skyrush, Lightning Racer Green , Great Bear, Comet Dorney Park: Steel Force, Talon, Hydra, Thunderhawk Dutch Wonderland: Merlin’s Mayhem, Kingdom Coaster Knoebels: Impulse, Phoenix, Twister, Flying Turns (good luck) Not allowed (due to no mounted POV or included w/ NoLimits 2 software): Sidewinder (HP), Cocoa Cruiser (HP), Laff Trakk (HP), Possessed (DP), Wild Mouse (DP), Woodstock’s Express (DP), Joust (DW), Black Diamond (Kbls), Kozmo’s Kurves (Kbls). The Rules • Build the most accurate and realistic recreation of one of the permitted coasters. • Submit your entry by Midnight Pacific Time Tuesday, June 24th. • Submit either: o A link to a POV video of your coaster posted to YouTube, or o A link to download your finished coaster or video • All entry videos will be edited with a mounted POV of the original coaster side-by-side. o The contest team will align your video with the original video either at the top of the lift hill or the moment of launch. Entry Form Submit your finished entries by filling out this form: https://forms.gle/4QEVsHzAHJirS3nBA Judging All edited video submissions will be posted to the ACE YouTube page for viewing. All event attendees will be provided a form to score each entry on a 1-10 scale, judging how accurately the recreation matched the original ride. Highest average score wins! .

Roller coasters are iconic structures that provide safe thrills for riders. Safety is achieved using multiple safety mechanisms: for example, bogies have multiple wheels that hold trains on track, a block system prevents trains from colliding and riders are held in place with safety restraints. Regular maintenance checks are also performed to prevent accidents caused by failed parts. Roller coasters are designed using a heartline spline and calculating accelerations in all possible scenarios to prevent rollbacks and too high values of accelerations, which could cause damage to riders’ bodies. A reach envelope is applied to the spline to prevent riders from hitting nearby objects. The speed and curvature of the track combined create acceler- ations that need to be countered with adequate track and support structures. A track cross- section usually consists of rails, cross-ties and a spine, while support structures can vary depending on height and loads.

Overture Humans have always been fascinated with marine mammals. These creatures have been the basis of mythical tales since Antiquity. For centuries naturalists classified them as fish. Today they are symbols of the environmental movement as well as the source of heated controversies: whether we are dealing with the clubbing pub seals in the Arctic or whaling by industrialized nations, marine mammals continue to be a hot issue in science, politics, economics, and ethics. But if we want to better understand these issues, we need to learn more about marine mammal biology. The problem is that, despite increased research efforts, only in the last two decades we have made significant progress in learning about these creatures. And yet, that knowledge is largely limited to a handful of species because they are either relatively easy to observe in nature or because they can be studied in captivity. Still, because of television documentaries, ‘coffee-table’ books, displays in many aquaria around the world, and a growing whale and dolphin watching industry, people believe that they have a certain familiarity with many species of marine mammals (for more on the relationship between humans and marine mammals such as whales, see Ellis 1991, Forestell 2002).
