Archaic Eretria
ARCHAIC ERETRIA This book presents for the first time a history of Eretria during the Archaic Era, the city’s most notable period of political importance. Keith Walker examines all the major elements of the city’s success. One of the key factors explored is Eretria’s role as a pioneer coloniser in both the Levant and the West— its early Aegean ‘island empire’ anticipates that of Athens by more than a century, and Eretrian shipping and trade was similarly widespread. We are shown how the strength of the navy conferred thalassocratic status on the city between 506 and 490 BC, and that the importance of its rowers (Eretria means ‘the rowing city’) probably explains the appearance of its democratic constitution. Walker dates this to the last decade of the sixth century; given the presence of Athenian political exiles there, this may well have provided a model for the later reforms of Kleisthenes in Athens. Eretria’s major, indeed dominant, role in the events of central Greece in the last half of the sixth century, and in the events of the Ionian Revolt to 490, is clearly demonstrated, and the tyranny of Diagoras (c. 538–509), perhaps the golden age of the city, is fully examined. Full documentation of literary, epigraphic and archaeological sources (most of which have previously been inaccessible to an English-speaking audience) is provided, creating a fascinating history and a valuable resource for the Greek historian. Aicher_10June2013_Layout 1 6/13/13 3:22 PM Page 111 Herodotus and the Vulnerability Ethic in Ancient Greece PETER AICHER Herodotus was a narrative pioneer, and his literary trek begins with the story of Croesus. More legend than history, the Croesus Logos, as it’s sometimes called in the literature, draws the reader in with its concentrated drama of family ambition, riddling oracles, prophetic irony, and the fated tumble of its hero. The aim of my essay is to explore some important dimen- sions of this story that have been overlooked in Herodotean scholarship and in prevailing accounts of Greek ethical thought. First, the story of Croesus gives shape and dramatic form to an ethic of vulnerability occupying an important place in Greek thought. A chief point of reference in this condiseration of the vulnerability ethic will be, in a rather full discussion, Aristotle’s own reaction to the Croesus story in the Nichomachean Ethics. Aristotle’s complex, perhaps inconsistent, discussion of a core maxim from the story re- veals a real ambivalence about its ethical message. Since this message from the Croesus story has much in common with the message of tragedy, Aristotle’s ambiva- lence also has relevance for his famous definition of tragedy in the Poetics, and in general expresses more resistance to- wards the message of tragic vulnerability than Martha Nuss- baum allows in her portrayal of an Aristotle who recognizes the fragility of goodness. There is also an important dimension to Solon’s (or rather Herodotus’) vulnerability ethic that Aristotle does not con- sider, since it lies outside the scope of the ethical life as he conceives it. -

General situation, review Macedonia has been exposed Tto the influence of classical culture during the long period from the ancient times to our days. Through the centuries, this influence was stronger or weaker, but ever present in some way. In the beginning, the contact with the classical Greek culture was immediate in architecture and art. The remains of many ancient cities in Macedonia today, with their theatres, monuments, statues etc. are strong evidence of this contact. Many historical and literary documents also provide evidence of authentic classical cultural way of living in ancient Macedonia. During the Byzantine period Macedonia remained part of the empire. The specific interest in the classical culture of Byzantium was evident to various degrees in cultural centers of Macedonia. The continuity of the classical influence was interrupted by the Turkish conquest in the 15th century and this trend remained until the 19th century. In the first half of the 19th century, historical and cultural circumstances started to change. It was the time of rebellion of Balkan peoples against the Turkish rule and emergence of new independent national states. The interest for classical culture returned under the influence of Western Europe, especially France – the French Revolution launched ideas of new humanism, romanticism and neoclassicism. But this influence in Macedonia did not become apparent immediately. At the time, Macedonia was still under Turkish rule and all new ideas were originating in the countries newly founded in the neighborhood. -

Seeing Gods: Epiphany and Narrative in the Greek Novels ROBERT L. CIOFFI Bard College The Greek world was full of the divine, and the imagined world of the ancient novels was no different.1 Divinity and its worship pervade the novels’ narra- tives, helping to unite, drive apart, and then reunite their protagonists. In this paper, I explore the relationship between ancient religion and literature, the transformation of literary tradition, and the place of the marvelous in the nov- els’ narratives by examining the role that one aspect of the human experience of the gods, epiphany, plays in the genre. Although the novelists describe very few scenes of actual epiphany,2 they make abundant use of the epiphanic met- aphor in what I will call “epiphanic situations,” when an internal audience reacts to the hero or, most often, the heroine of the novel as if he or she were a god or goddess. These epiphanic situations transform the common metaphor of divine beauty into a reality, at least as experienced by the internal audience,3 and they offer the novelists an alternative to ekphrasis for expressing ineffable beauty. ————— 1 Zeitlin 2008, 91 writes: “The novels are full of: temples, shrines, altars, priests, rituals and offerings, dreams (or oracles), prophecies, divine epiphanies, aretalogies, mystic language and other metaphors of the sacred (not forgetting, in addition, exotic barbarian rites).” 2 In the novels, mortals are most frequently visited by divinities during dreams: e.g., Chari- ton 2,3; X. by Konstantinou, Evangelos Precipitated primarily by the study of ancient Greece, a growing enthusiasm for Greece emerged in Europe from the 18th century. This enthusiasm manifested itself in literature and art in the movements referred to as classicism and neoclassicism. The founda- tions of contemporary culture were identified in the culture of Greek antiquity and there was an attempt to learn more about and even revive the latter. These efforts manifested themselves in the themes, motifs and forms employed in literature and art. How- ever, European philhellenism also had an effect in the political sphere. Numerous societies were founded to support the cause of Greek independence during the Greek War of Independence, and volunteers went to Greece to join the fight against the Ottoman Empire. Conversely, the emergence of the Enlightenment in Greece was due at least in part to the Greek students who studied at European universities and brought Enlightenment ideas with them back to Greece. The Greeks were influenced by the civilizations that preceded them but they were the first to express themselves in a way that was characteristically Western. 3. It was the first culture that can be called humanistic, glorifying human beings as individuals rather than as part of some larger social order. 4. Greek culture changed rapidly and was short lived. 5. The celebrated dynamism of Greek culture is met with somewhat greater ambivalence in modern times as the West has gained an appreciation of older civilizations and traditions. B. Crete 1. The first Greek civilization developed on the Mediterranean island of Crete around 2000 B.C. 2. The island’s geographic location, equidistant between Egypt and the Greek mainland, was a primary factor in its role as a conduit of cultural transmission from Egypt to Greece. -

The Greek Language in the Diaspora Anastasios M. Tamis School of Arts and Sciences The University of Notre Dame Australia Expatriation has been a consistent theme in Greek history since the years immediately after the Fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans (1453) 1 until 1974, when Greece began importing economic migrants and refugees (Tamis, 2005). Greek-speaking communities and clusters of Greek presence were established throughout the world, even in the most remote places. Only recently (post-1974), Greek settlement experience from a socio-cultural and linguistic perspective became a focal point in research for national identity and immigrant studies. During the long periods of settlement in foreign lands, Greek expatriates chose to maintain their ethno-linguistic and religious identity, establishing religious communities and elementary Greek language classes. Unfortunately, since Independence (1830), and until the restoration of Democracy (1974), Greece did not possess, at government level, any language policy for the expatriated Greeks. -

Tsymbursky show us, that ancient population from Indo-Europeans of the Balkans were Pelasgians[1], in this regard, i assume that the Pelasgians were the ancient ancestors of the Proto Greek-Italic tribes, and related Proto Balto-Slavic tribes. Of the my opinion, that the ancestors of the Pelasgians came to the Balkans and the Italian Peninsula from Central Europe and the Baltic. Image 1. Pelasgians and their war against Dorians[2] The Herodotus[3], and also other antique authors Indicated, that Pelasgians before the Greeks settled in Greece, Asia Minor and in many parts of Italy. By the name of Pelasgians in the ancient times was called Peloponnese Peninsula in Greece, and possibly the goddess Athena-Pallada's cult at the Greeks (Arcadia at the Latins[4]. The image of Pallada it is an image of the warror- godness. On behalf of Pallada occurs the word "palladium" (a 708 BEHP «Suyun»; Vol.4, June 2017, №7 [1,2]; ISSN:2410-1788 wooden image of a goddess possessing a miraculous effect)[5]. The city that owned palladium was considered to be under the auspices of the goddess. About palladium, stored in Troy, there was a legend that he fell from the sky. The descendants of Aeneas brought him to Rome, and since then palladium was kept in the temple of Vesta[6]. Aeneas was an ancestor of the Adriatic Veneti (Heneti)[7] in the Etruria land.
