The Parking Lot… past events Page 2 Looking for Good Curves III, September 10, Review Bob Maurer and Becca Gustavel & Marcello and Peggy Codispoti The weather on Sunday September 10 was about as perfect as it gets for a top-down tour, a sunny 70 degrees, as 14 cars gathered just south of Canton for a 173 mile tour. We departed i-77 Exit 101 at 9:30 AM and for the most part, we drove twisty roads at a brisk pace through parts of Stark, Carroll, Tuscarawas, Coshocton, Holmes and Wayne counties. In order to help maintain a brisk pace, we drove in two groups of 7 cars, with Marcello and Peggy Codispoti leading Group Rouge that met up with an interesting brief delay just south of Stone Creek. While we have come to expect delays on the road caused by cattle crossing, Amish buggies or slow farm equipment, they were delayed by a small airplane, that was crossing the road in front of them. Lunch break was at Ravens Glenn Winery near Coshocton, and while the pre-lunch wine tasting was fun and the food was good, the service was extremely disappointing. Our lunch break ended up being over 2 hours long because of a long wait for our food. Fortunately our afternoon schedule was flexible and no harm done. Peggy and Marcello provided us with goodie bags of fresh local apples and her homemade biscotti, and Becca provided home crafted wine charms and her hand sewn wine bottle cozies. We ended at Hartzler’s ice Cream on Route 3 north of Wooster at about 4:30 PM where everyone seemed to like their ice cream and we all had a nice end of tour visit. We wish to thank our co-leaders Marcello and Peggy Codispoti and all those who came out for the tour: Group Noir, led by Becca and me, was Scott and Mary Miller, Rich Velardo, Dennis and Maryann Beckman, Bob Palmer and Ava Singerman, Roger and Carolyn Davies and Brian Bouchard and Sandra Shaffer. Group Rouge, was led by Peggy and Marcello, and included Daryl and Jane Baker, Mike and Lois Kerklo, Dan Cali, Dale Costilow, Phil Daly and Patty, and Jim and Leigh Lambert. Pictures – we need pictures Tom Walden If you have event pictures you would like to share on the web site, please send them to me at [email protected] or you can also use [email protected]. We are updating the past events page and especially need pictures from events in 2016 and this year. We can get some write-ups from the past newsletters and might be able to use some pictures from Facebook – but more event pictures are needed. Also, for future events, please send pictures of them as they happen. If you attend an automotive event sponsored by another club (such as River Run, autocross, etc.) please send pictures, and a write-up if it was not in the newsletter. Thanks. Start Your Engines… coming events October 11th, AWD Charlie and Marlene Rodgers Join us for the AWD at Olesia’s Place in North Royalton on Wednesday, October 11th at 6:30 p.m. for cocktails, dinner at 7:00 p.m. They have capacity for 30 members. On this year’s event, Rallyemasters Bob and Ava will direct you through a southern & western route of our scenic Cuyahoga & Summit County Metroparks in a fun rallye easy enough for a beginner to tackle and challenging enough for a seasoned rallye participant. The autumn park colors will make for a beautiful tour and we will gather at the finishing line for refreshments and prizes at “Das Schnitzel House” at 5728 Pearl Rd., Parma. The starting point for this event will be the parking lot of the Boston Mills Ski Resort (across from the train tracks) at 7100 Riverview Road, Peninsula, Ohio. Rallyers should gather by 11:00 a.m. in order to get their instructions at a driver’s meeting and be prepared to leave in 2-minute increments beginning at 11:30 a.m. The route will take you on an enjoyable, un-timed drive while you and your navigator answer questions regarding what you see. There will be rest stops, time to sight-see and maybe even some opportunities to get out of your car, explore the area and maybe find another clue or two. Once we all reach our destination there will be appetizers provided for the Rallye participants and a delightful German-style menu for additional food and beverage as the Rallyemasters tally the scores and award the prizes. All questions will be answered in a visual display and you must be present to win! The Way of All Flesh Chapter I When I was a small boy at the beginning of the century I remember an old man who wore knee-breeches and worsted stockings, and who used to hobble about the street of our village with the help of a stick. He must have been getting on for eighty in the year 1807, earlier than which date I suppose I can hardly remember him, for I was born in 1802. A few white locks hung about his ears, his shoulders were bent and his knees feeble, but he was still hale, and was much respected in our little world of Paleham. His name was Pontifex. His wife was said to be his master; I have been told she brought him a little money, but it cannot have been much. She was a tall, square-shouldered person (I have heard my father call her a Gothic woman) who had insisted on being married to Mr Pontifex when he was young and too good-natured to say nay to any woman who wooed him. The pair had lived not unhappily together, for Mr Pontifex’s temper was easy and he soon learned to bow before his wife’s more stormy moods. Mr Pontifex was a carpenter by trade; he was also at one time parish clerk; when I remember him, however, he had so far risen in life as to be no longer compelled to 2 of 736 The Way of All Flesh work with his own hands.

Come with me. A generation ago, the astronomer Carl Sagan stood here and launched hundreds of millions of us on a great adventure: the exploration of the universe revealed by science. It's time to get going again. We're about to begin a journey that will take us from the infinitesimal to the infinite, from the dawn of time to the distant future. We'll explore galaxies and suns and worlds, surf the gravity waves of space-time, encounter beings that live in fire and ice, explore the planets of stars that never die, discover atoms as massive as suns and universes smaller than atoms. Cosmos is also a story about us. It's the saga of how wandering bands of hunters and gatherers found their way to the stars, one adventure with many heroes.

  • Sophie's World
Sophie’s World Jostien Gaarder Reviews: More praise for the international bestseller that has become “Europe’s oddball literary sensation of the decade” (New York Newsday) “A page-turner.” —Entertainment Weekly “First, think of a beginner’s guide to philosophy, written by a schoolteacher ... Next, imagine a fantasy novel— something like a modern-day version of Through the Looking Glass. Meld these disparate genres, and what do you get? Well, what you get is an improbable international bestseller ... a runaway hit... [a] tour deforce.” —Time “Compelling.” —Los Angeles Times “Its depth of learning, its intelligence and its totally original conception give it enormous magnetic appeal ... To be fully human, and to feel our continuity with 3,000 years of philosophical inquiry, we need to put ourselves in Sophie’s world.” —Boston Sunday Globe “Involving and often humorous.” —USA Today “In the adroit hands of Jostein Gaarder, the whole sweep of three millennia of Western philosophy is rendered as lively as a gossip column ... Literary sorcery of the first rank.” —Fort Worth Star-Telegram “A comprehensive history of Western philosophy as recounted to a 14-year-old Norwegian schoolgirl... The book will serve as a first-rate introduction to anyone who never took an introductory philosophy course, and as a pleasant refresher for those who have and have forgotten most of it... [Sophie’s mother] is a marvelous comic foil.” —Newsweek “Terrifically entertaining and imaginative ... I’ll read Sophie’s World again.” — Daily Mail “What is admirable in the novel is the utter unpretentious-ness of the philosophical lessons, the plain and workmanlike prose which manages to deliver Western philosophy in accounts that are crystal clear.

  • 1 'But by Blood No Wolf Am I': Language and Agency, Instinct And
1 ‘But by blood no wolf am I’: Language and Agency, Instinct and Essence – Transcending Antinomies in Maggie Stiefvater’s Shiver series The sympathetic vampire is now a familiar creature. Stephenie Mayer’s Twilight (2005) has made us aware of the attraction of radical otherness, where the mysterious non-humanity of the love object becomes a powerful source of desire rather than terror alone.1 Other paranormal species have also become somewhat domesticated and are now lovers rather than monstrous Others, resulting in the new hybridised genre of paranormal romance, where Gothic horror couples with romantic fiction.2 Each species of monster (whether vampire, shapeshifter, faerie, angel, or zombie) lends itself to different domains of enquiry. The shapeshifter, especially the werewolf, is particularly useful as an instrument for exploring the boundaries of humanity and animality, culture and nature. Werewolves are far more tied to animality and the physiological than the present-day vampire, despite the latter’s often compulsive blood-lust.3 The werewolf, too, is bound to a hierarchical pack society; this group membership necessarily evokes a different perspective on the social than the usually solitary vampire. Of course, the blurring of the boundary between animal and human recurs throughout literature. Yet wolves in particular have long played a versatile role in exploring these demarcations. Wolves are ambiguously social animals yet savage outsiders, predators on the community, and disruptors of the pastoral (with all the additional allegorical weight that arrives with Christianity). They are also founders and nurturers of culture, raising Romulus and Remus, or fostering into sociality those abandoned feral children that so fascinated Enlightenment thinkers as they probed into the origins of society and language.4 However, one must be careful not to take the shapeshifter as some timeless archetype; perspectives on our relationship with nature and animality shift dramatically and readings of werewolf texts must be particularised and placed into context.

  • Our Gifts a Proof of World Brotherhood
»») GENERAL CHURCH PAPER OF THE SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTISTS . (- CG Our Gifts a Proof of World Brotherhood A Message From the Treasurer of the General Conference By W. E. NELSON - . N ALL the teachings of Jesus there is one thread that runs throughout and that is the universal brotherhood of mankind. His was a world-wide I work. He came to seek and save the lost, not of Palestine only but of the whole human race. His commission, or assignment of work, to His followers was, Go into all the world and make Christians of all who will listen. When that task is completed, then the second coming of Christ will take place. The great motive power in the proclamation of the gospel, the good news of salvation, is the presence of Christ with His followers as represented by the Holy Spirit, but, since creation, in the work of God He has always used material things as well as His Spirit to accomplish His purposes. During His first advent, He fed the thousands by the sea and, ministered to the physical needs of the people in a very definite way. He healed the sick, the halt, the lame, and the blind, and when He went away He gaVe to every, man his work. There are no exceptions recorded. In the organization of the Great Advent Movement this principle must be kept in mind. All. are to share in the responsibility of spreading the glad tidings of Jesus' second coming. The giving and gathering of money is part of the gospel work, and where done according to God's plan is as truly a spiritual work as any other part of the Advent Movement, and all can share in this phase of the message.
